Is there a site or can someone help explain the difference between the
model numbers of the PS2? What kinds of improvements or changes were
there since PS2's inception? Has any improvements been made in its DVD
playback capabilities?

Determine Your PS2 Motherboard Version
Before you order your modchip, you need to know what version motherboard your PS2 console
has. Sometimes, you can determine your version by the model number (the "SCPH-" number on
the back of your console), or by other external characteristics of your console, as noted
below. However, the only way to be 100% sure of your version is to open up your console
and compare the board to our installation diagrams. Click on the links below to compare
your board to our diagrams:

a.. Version 1 - SCPH-30001, 10 screws on bottom of case, serial no. starts with "U1"
b.. Version 2 - SCPH-30001, 10 screws on bottom of case, serial no. starts with "U0"
c.. Version 3 - SCPH-30001, 10 screws on bottom of case, serial no. starts with "U2"
d.. Version 4 - SCPH-30000, 30001, 35001, 30002, 35002, 30003, 35003, 30004, or 35004, 8
screws on bottom of case
e.. Version 4 (Gap/No Gap) - the difference between v4 "Gap" and v4 "No Gap" illustrated
f.. Version 5 - SCPH-30000R, 30001R, 30002R, 30003R, 30004R, or 30006R. Also, some
SCPH-30000, 30001, 30002, 30003, and 30004 models have a V5/V6
g.. Version 5 & 6 - the difference between these two versions illustrated
h.. Version 7 - SCPH-39000, 39001, 39002, 39003, 39004, 39008 or 37000
i.. Version 8 - Only in Japanese consoles. SCPH-39000, or, SCPH-39006 (GH-022 BIOS 090)
j.. Version 9 - if you have SCPH-50000, 50001, 50002, 50003, 50004, 50006, or 50007 you
have a v9 or v10 board.
k.. Version 10 - SCPH-5000x, with date code "3D" to the right and below the serial
number on the back of the console. (GH-026 board)

Thanks, but I really just want to know what differences there are in the
different models, not how to mod it.

these words of wisdom:

The current 50000-series have progressive scan DVD playback, a quieter fan, a
built-in infrared port, no firewire port and supports the newer remote with the
power button on it.

Eric, although the sites help you identify the various motherboards, as you
have probably found out, they don't discuss why the different motherboards
were required or what changes were made. The 5000 series showed significant
changes with the progressive scan laser, the elimination of the firewire
port and the addition of the IR remote port. Earlier models with the suffix
r (eg. 30001r) had the updated software for the DVD driver added. With
earlier versions, the updated software had to be loaded into the memory
card, it came on the driver CD that came with the remote control.
