Next on "Wings." Aw, who cares?
They should have just left them even since they both have differences that
could ultimately be the determining factor.
All in all it is a great review though.

I was going to sit this season out but with these great reviews it looks like
Sega has returned to the days of the Genesis with huge changes in the gameplay
department. The first paragraph of the review sold me with talk of throwing
long time fans off. This is what I have been talking about. I want to be
thrown off instead of feeling like I have already played the game.

That's an offline-only limitation, of course, as up to 8 can play online
(four each on two Xboxes) and hardly a limitation at any rate. Especially
without supporting widescreen on HDTV sets, 8 players offline strikes me as
pretty unwieldly. I could see supporting 5+ players in 16:9, but I don't
think it works well in 4:3. I think having so many players in a single game
would be interesting but you'd have to be with a group of guys who really
enjoy positional play and doing all the things required to win a football
game, such as helping execute plays when they know they'll be decoys and
never touch the ball for example. There could be a lot of bored people/hard
feelings if one or more of those 8 people went most of the game never
touching the ball. :)

I remember NFL 2K2's control system was considered by some reviewers to
be better suited to the Xbox (given the Xbox's controller was a closer match
to the DC's which the control scheme had been originally made in mind of).
Is that no longer true with the overhaul to the game's controls, or is this
just an expression of your personal bias as regards controllers?

Control-wise, I despise the S controller for ESPN. It's all but impossible
to stiff-arm defenders and still maintain the ability to spin, juke, dive
etc. Also using the white and black buttons for swim moves, DB and LB
aligments stinks. It's not a game killer though, it just would be better to
play on the DS.

ESPN/2K fans definitely took the high road and did not slag Madden when it

It seems turnabout isn't considered fairplay with the Sega-mites. When
Madden was released the user reviews were flooded with angry Sega fans that
had to wait another month for the release of ESPN. I guess we'll see which
one is better when the sales figures come out.
RickB
Nor is it with Maddenettes like yourself.

Riiiiight, because we all know sales figures == quality.
That's good to hear, considering how "brilliantly" Sega played the console
market.
Finally facing up to what you really are Skye? Just switch Madden to NFL2K and
look in the mirror. BOO-YAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
ESPN fanboys went on incessantly about EA/MS's screw-up with importing
college players into Madden. Let's see if Sega fixes the Dolby Digital
lockups as quickly as EA took care of their issue. And we won't even talk
about promising 720p and not delivering (no truth in advertising).
Skye
It actually does. The more money EA makes, the more money they have to put
towards future development/resources. That improves the game in subsequent
years. Every time Sega (or any other company) fails like they did last year,
they layoff employees and generally degrade their game (in the case of the
NCAA game, dead completely).
EA selling through 2 million copies in 2 weeks is amazing. I hope Sega's
sales aren't a debacle like last year, because it would be a shame to lose a
series that's finally getting good (great, actually) again.
Skye
Nintendolts are the big losers this year not being able to play one of the
best football games ever made.
Skye
If I cared about football games, maybe I'd care.
If you cared about games, you'd own more than a GC.
But of course, you're talking about how a game will improve in
the future, while the previous poster was talking about how a
game's sales don't reflect upon the quality of what is currently
available for sale. And even what you're saying isn't exactly
true, since there are so many more complex factors involved than
just the simple idea that "more money = better future products."
You should tell that to Microsoft.
> Every time Sega (or any other company) fails like they did last year,
> they layoff employees and generally degrade their game
Companies fail all the time. That doesn't necessarily mean that
any future properties they create will be "degraded." In Sega's
case, their game has in fact gotten much better, despite their
obvious past failures.

Actually this years Madden is much more awesome than last year's because of
how well it did. High sales numbers actually are a good thing. I know Sega
fanboys don't comprehend that, but it is true.

It got better because they absorbed a good number of developers from the now
defunct NCAA game. Why is it defunct? Because its sales were horrendous.
Rest assured, if ESPN's sales numbers are as bad as last year, it will
unfortunately be gone as well (or if we're lucky, bought up by MS or Sony).
Skye
Yes, high sales numbers are "a good thing." Thanks for
stating the obvious, Martha. ;) But high sales numbers
didn't make Madden the awesome game it is. Sure it helped,
as every business needs money to run and hire talent, but
there are lots of other factors. And as I said before, if
high sales were all that was needed to make better
products, Microsoft would have been making increasingly
super-fantastic products from the day the company was
created.

It's very difficult to compete against EA's Madden. I had
someone who wanted to start a game company ask me some
questions about it, and one of the things he said was how
he didn't want to do a football game, because he wasn't
interested in it. I said that's good, because there would
be no way he could compete against Madden. The brand is
just too strong.
Even if MS bought ESPN, it still would be a tough fight.
Money isn't the answer to all things, as MS is finding out
with the Xbox. In the long term however, anything is possible
as companies slip up, or get complacent. That's happened
repeatedly with videogames and other industries. It's
difficult to stay on top forever. I'll admit though, that
EA with their great marketing and distribution system, has
a very good chance at it. ;)

Definitely a football thread but it is crossposted to the GameCube forum as
well.
I guess I am older or just don't appreciate getting my pipes cleaned as much
as I use ta. It only does the trick for me for a couple hours than I am
back to being a dick/asshole.
Too bad he said he prefered ESPN to Madden in almost every way you idiot.
Maybe a couple shots of some good ole whiskey?
A couple shots usually mellows me out more so than getting the pipes
cleaned. Both at the same time work best though.... :-)
this whole thread is cross posted. Some people are lazy and don't remove the
cross posts.
Others are stupid and don't see that they are there.
Yeah, me, too.

Hey whatever gets you laid...........buy it. You need a bell ringing son.
One thing blatantly obvious is that you don't.

It should in theory. And no doubt Tiburon has a huge staff, which gets
richly rewarded with bonuses and stock options as Madden and NCAA sales
take off and push EA's stock price higher.
But as long as I've been buying Madden, I have to concede that Sega and
this year, even GameDay, are putting more things into their games.
For instance, both of these games have 480p support for the PS2 while
Madden doesn't. Burnout 2 came out with 480p support over a year ago?
So the libraries and tools are out there but EA's success seems to be
producing a certain inertia, as they may be reluctant to crack the
engine, which is based on their first PS2 Madden game (although I think
the gameplay experience has changed a lot in many ways and stayed the
same in other ways).
One thing blatantly obvious is that I do but *I* don't have
to pay for it.
Pssst, look up the definition of "obvious".
Loser: see cj
Yet you both replied to an obvious football thread.
You're kidding, right? Please tell me you just didn't say that sale figures
equal quality?

Maybe that's what you like to think happens in *theory*, but in the real
world there are many other factors that come into play.

The only place 2K3 had dismal sales last year was on the PS2. On the Xbox,
a higher percentage of owners bought 2K3 than Madden.
A higher percentage doesn't help. When you tell stock holders, "we're going
to sell one and a half million units across and all platforms and you barely
make 500,000, a "higher percentage" gets your game cancelled(Sega's NCAA
game). And yes, I will equate Madden's ever growing sales numbers with a
higher quality game. If it sucked, it would drop in sales each year, and
also receive lower scores.
Is it possible that great games don't all sell well? Yep. Is it possible
that shitty games sell well, and even grow their userbase year after year
for 10 years. Nope.
Not me. I replied to Joe & Skye, Skye the big gay guy.

Don't make excuses. You claimed you don't care about football, but yet you
read (and engaged) in a thread that was obviously about football (Subject:
ESPN NFL gets 9.3 at Gamespot).
We all know how into professional football gay guys are.
You're far to entertaining to put in the killfile.
