E3 2006: Mobile Suit Gundam Hands-On
We take control of the next-generation mecha title.
May 10, 2006 - Mobile Suit Gundam made its public debut today, right in
the middle of Sony's PS3 booth. For those that remember the first demo,
where Sony reps walked one of the machines down a deserted town, just
know the real game looks even better. And not just a little better,
either; the game looks downright fantastic. It's still early though.
Currently, the game is only 20% complete with almost a year of
development time left.
The demo started with a short mission briefing. It looked like your
average military-style objective summary, complete with maps, waypoints
and satellite imagery. The whole sequence lasted about a minute, and it
never went beyond the initial screen. At this point, it's unclear
whether this sequence was created just for the show. Either way, it's
there and it did its job without looking too flashy.
The single mission available kept things pretty simple. Players had to
infiltrate enemy territory and eliminate everything in sight. The demo
recommended players approach from the North, so that's exactly what
went down. The mission took place in a barren wasteland with a few
rocky hills scattered her and there. The environment also packed a few
cars and what looked like abandoned military complexes. As mentioned
earlier, it looked very impressive. The texture work on vehicles, hills
and structures looked very sharp.
>From there, players had to move forward and bust everything they came
across. Here's how the controls work: the left analog stick controls
character movement while the right controls the camera. It's a pretty
basic setup, though it did have one thing different. Instead of
offering the kind of freedom common in third-person action titles, the
camera would snap back into place when moved vertically. The square and
triangle buttons fire two different weapons, a Vulcan cannon and some
other kind of automatic gun. Meanwhile, the shoulder buttons handled
rocket boosters, alternative fire and defense.
And of course, there's always the laser swords that fans have come to
expect. So, all the pieces are definitely in place. As it stands,
though, the game feels pretty rough. Movement is somewhat unresponsive
as are the different attack options. One can make the argument that
controlling mecha is supposed to feel that way, but it honestly feels
unfinished, as opposed to slow for the sake of "realism." There's even
a substantial delay between pressing the attack buttons and having the
mech start firing. But the biggest issue is when using the laser sword.
It's near impossible to hit anything since enemies jump away in two
seconds when approached but it takes about 3-4 seconds to swing.
Again, it's early, so these issues will likely disappear. Blasting
enemies with the assortment of weapons seemed fun enough, and the
experience definitely leans toward action as opposed to strategy. It's
possible to shoot off specific parts, such arms and weapons. But when
enemies were capped in the legs they simply fell over and exploded.
Each fatal shot came with a groovy in-game cutscene of the enemy
falling to its death. In addition, players could run around and destroy
cars and buildings, so that's always a plus.
Stay tuned for more.
Oh yeah that'll rock *rolls eyes...
PS3 is a lost cause..give it up...

Fixed that for ya.
It's obvious to everyone but you that Sony's E3 showing this year has
landed with a flatulent poof. Sony opened its kimono, all right... and
revealed that it was hung like a housefly.
There's no question to any logical observer, or anyone with industry
experience, that the "star" of Sony's E3 showing last year -- the
fraudulent Killzone footage -- was rendered in Lightwave and composited
using Combustion. So it's no surprise that we haven't seen hide nor
hair of Killzone for the PS3 this year. Whatever leaps other
developers may have made in the year hence, and whatever delusions you
put forth here, the fact remains that Sony has earned the ho-hum
response they're getting this year.
But it's certainly fun watching it blow up in your face! =) Keep up
the posts. Even if your sock-troll is running out of steam, it's nice
to have you to kick around.
You're writing to the same people that have access to the same reports,
smae footage, and same on-show experiences that you do.
How can you even pretend to think the PS3 trumped the 360?
Halo3, Gears of War, Alan Wake, Fable 2, Mass Effect, Too Human, Forza
2 - they all easily match or blow away the best the PS3 has to offer at
E3.
You simply can't even begin to comprehend how badly this reflects on
the PS3 which has yet to rpove it's anything more than an expensive
games console, or cheap HD Disc player.
Get a life, and stop playing with yourself.

Hyperbole aside, there are many more interesting and engaging things
being announced and demo'd at E3 this year than the PS3.

Prove it. :P

And he enjoys being kicked, so it's win-win!
No Killzone at E3.
No Motorstorm at E3.
Warhawk at E3 (IGN): "the look of the demo was far away from the
gorgeous trailer shown at TGS 2005 -- powerful waves rolling through
canyons have been replaced with more simple textures and depth effects
...Textures were generally weak, and there was little next-gen depth to
the texturing. "
Untold Legends at E3 (first party game): looks like an Xbox game.
Tekken 6: Looks worse than DOA on Xbox (and what they showed wasn't
even realtime).
Resistance: Call of Duty 2 with the brightness turned way down and
monsters thrown in.
Fatal Inertia: Well, look for yourself: http://tinyurl.com/mokcc
And don't forget Prey, which makes the entire PoS3 library look like the
Faichild Channel F.

Bliggy your posts remind me of a desparate person trying to throw enough
shit against the wall hoping something sticks.
The ps3 isnt anywhere near a leap ahead of the 360 as sony expected.
Right now I say no PS3 for me.

LOL, grasping at straws by posting articles for a shitty Sonic game?
Holy fuck your stupid.

Where ya been? Working overtime at McDonalds to save up that $600?
Hey, I don't blame ya...if I was a Sony tool like you I would have
disappeared last week as well.
