Hey everybody.

If you haven't heard, sony plans to release a version of the linux kernel
and GNU tools for the ps2...so far only in Japan. This is in response to a
petition, which can be found (and signed) at:

http://www.peanuts.gr.jp/pslinux/

The reason they have not announced availability outside of Japan appears to
be that there were about 4 times the signatures on the Japanese site as on
the English one...since the site is in Japan and was originally in Japanese,
this is not terribly unexpected. But still, we need more signatures to make
this come to the rest of us...so sign the petition. Oh, and mention in the
comments that we would rather be able to buy the software seperately from
the other things they plan on bundling in Japan...right now, they plan to
sell a kit consisting of a dvd with the software, a hard drive and network
card, a usb keyboard and mouse, and a vga adapter (about time). I
personally think it would be better to be able to buy just the software
alone, and the vga adapter alone...lots of people have usb key/mice, and the
hdd/net thing will be available seperately anyway...plus, the kit will cost
around $200 in Japan, which is kinda steep.

If you already went and signed, you probably know why linux on the ps2 would
be cool...so you can stop reading now...for the rest of you, there are lots
of reasons this is a GOOD THING! First, for those who are into this sort of
thing, it could greatly expand the capabilities of the machine. You could
run web and ftp servers, a firewall for your network, or linux programs like
the GIMP (an open-source, free photoshop-type app with scripting) or
moonlight 3D (an opensouce, free, professional quality 3d renderer) or
netscape, or whatever...word processing, spreadsheets, pretty much anything
your computer can do. But at much lower cost; the ps2 is cheap, even if you
add $200 for the kit, and almost all linux software is free for download.
The ps2 would become a do-it-all box, and one that would kick a lot of ass.
So go ahead, go sign the petition at: http://www.peanuts.gr.jp/pslinux/
and tell sony that you want linux NOW! Oh, and if you want, mention that it
would be better sold in pieces rather than a kit.

Better still, the kit would benefit people who didn't even have it.
Included in the kit are register maps for the emotion engine and graphics
synthesizer, instruction sets, glib c 2.2.2 compiler (for writing/compiling
c programs) user's manuals, and a runtime environment for running ps2
software. It would allow people to write their own software, on their own
ps2. The real implications of this are hard to guess, but if nothing else,
ports of linux software, including games, should be made much, much easier.
And with tens of thousands of developers worldwide already working on linux,
we would gain powerful development for our platform. So go here:
http://www.peanuts.gr.jp/pslinux/ and sign the petition!

Finally, this is a great strategic step against M$. The XBox is going to
run windows in some form; this will allow a lot of PC software to be ported
really easily, and it will allow some capabilities that are not usually
considered part of the console arena. Linux would not only be an answer to
this move, it would be a better answer. It would shore up Sony's console
early, months before the multi million dollar onslaught that we all know is
coming. It protects our lunch money from that bully in redmond. Stop Bill
Gates! Sign the petition, at:
http://www.peanuts.gr.jp/pslinux/

So there it is. That's why you should want linux on the ps2. At the very
least, it is a brilliant strategic move that will help ensure our platform's
success. At the most, it could single-handedly change the perception of
what consoles can do. We don't know which it will be, but either way, it is
a GOOD THING! So come on, do your part, and just go sign up. here:
http://www.peanuts.gr.jp/pslinux/ And don't forget the comment about
splitting up the kit!

Thanks everybody. I know this message was long, but we need to raise
awareness and put the pressure on Sony. This is important. Have a good
one.

Hunter.

You can judge my intellect by most usenet posts. Remarkable.

Teemoney: what does FUAFS mean? I assume, judging the source, that it is

base foolishness befitting a man of your intellect.

Cichon: I really don't know what to say about that, except that you should

all go here: http://www.peanuts.gr.jp/pslinux/ and sign the petition to Sony
asking that they release linux for the ps2. Don't forget the comments!

Oh yeah, well I don't want to be your friend anymore. And Sony says they
don't either. So there.

Usenet poll: Is teemoney's intellect most like that of a:

a) person who holds a "masters in programming."

b) jellyfish.

c) cold brass dildo

Anyway, while we wait for the votes to come in on this...if you haven't
already, go to http://www.peanuts.gr.jp/pslinux/ and sign the
petition......read the bottom of this message if you don't know what I'm
talking about.

And thanks for the cold, hard proof that FUAFS was base foolishness.

...or "lack of" intellect to be more precise.
