I received a letter from Tina Kowaleski, the account manager at Sony responsible for
Atlus..

She explained that she was not able to tell -why- they rejected Soul Hackers because of
a non-disclosure agreement between Sony and Atlus.. I can understand this..

But here's the awesome part:

"We do see the value in the MegaTen (Shin Megamitensei) series and realize the
importance of satisfying the hardcore RPG fans in the US, which is why we are looking
forward to future submissions from Atlus and other RPG publishers."

Looking forward to future submissions? Does this mean Atlus' Persona 2?

The only thing that scares me is the "and other RPG publishers." Does this mean
"hardcore" RPGs like *Chocobo Dungeon?* (Yuck.)

I guess I'll continue believing that Persona 2 will get released here in the US. (YEAH!)

But it looks like we can only mourn for Soul Hackers.. I feel like part of me died with
it..

Translation: "We're going to be allowing a whole bunch of RPG's to be
released, just not Soul Hackers. Now be satisfied with what we give
you and stop buggin' us!"

>Looking forward to future submissions? Does this mean Atlus' Persona 2?

I may be being a little too optimistic here, but I think Persona 2 is
almost a sure thing. I mean, by the time they could finish the
translation, there won't be much RPG competition over here (on
Playstation anyway),so Sony will want something to fill the gaps.

But I can't understand why they would want to let Persona 2 come over,
and NOT allow Atlus to translate Soul Hackers. I mean, I love Persona
and all, but Soul Hackers looks twice as good from what you've
described and from what I've seen on Atlus Japan's website. I guess
it must be the riskier (in their minds) content in Soul Hackers. It
makes me wish that they would apply the old "If it looks good, sell
it!" rule to this game as they have to a few crap games in the past.

Ah, well... Why look a gift horse in the mouth though, eh? I'll take
Persona 2 without a bit of complaint. What, an RPG sequel that
actually IS a sequel? I wouldn't miss that for the world...

(By the way, did you once post that the Personas are smaller in Sin?
If so, that's too bad. I was hoping they'd be even bigger to show off
all the detail in the character designs.)

That was me that mentioned that. Unfortunately the personas are much
smaller, including the potraits of them that you can view in the menu
screens. Everything else seems changed for the better.

Ha, this is what I thought in the back of my mind. :)

I thought that Soul Hackers would be a sure thing as well.
You never know until you see a press release...

If they think that it's too risque, they haven't played it. The in-game content is tame
compared to say.. Xenogears. At least in term of religion. They probably saw that the
title was originally Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers.. Saw Devil, and had a skewed
perception of the meaning of "Akuma" in English.

That paired with the fact that so many other RPGs were being released and the possible
slack from parents over their kids playing a "demonic" RPG. With a title like Persona,
you don't attract much attention to parents. (Not to mention that K-A rating.. Uhhm,
what did the guy do? Look at a couple of sceenshots and say "Yeah, that's for kids.")
Heh heh.

If they release Persona 2 in the US, they might want to cut out Innocent Sin, at least
on the cover.. "I don't want my son playing SINFUL games."

Oh yes, in terms of challenge and conversation (the main points to any MegaTen RPG) Soul
Hackers is a much better game than Persona. Still, something about the storyline in
Persona really captures me. It was so different than any other..

Not seeing your characters in battle is a little bad, but the great spell and weapon
effects make up for it. :)

Tell me about it.. And American gamers finally get to play as Yuki. :)

If Persona 2 fails... what a cruel, cruel world we live in.

That was apparantly Henry.

From the photos and movies.. (NO DEMO!!) (weep) The personas do look a little smaller,
but I can understand this when they've got rotatable battle screens, bigger main
characters, etc.

I dunno, I'd say that it's the other way around, that Xenogears is tame
compared to Megaten. Megaten is a lot darker, where you actually become
more powerful by selling your soul to evil and all...plus they have
things like teenagers getting killed, and the basic satanic undertones as
well...Christian activist groups would crap their pants if they saw it.
I haven't played SH yet so I don't know how it is in terms of content
compared to the SFC Shin Megatens, but I do know that Persona was MUCH more
lighthearted than a "true" Megaten game...

Eh? All of them are like that...Persona is the only Megaten-like game where
you CAN see your characters. I actually found the battle system in
Persona much more annoying than traditional Megaten. Not that it was
bad, though...but it was lacking. I really missed having conversations
with the monsters...
