Sony Computer Entertainment, the game unit of Sony Corp, said global
shipments of its PlayStation 2 home game machine surpassed 100 million
units yesterday.

The product was launched in Japan in March 2000. Global shipments of
PlayStation 2 included 40.65 million units to North America, 37.14
million to Europe and 22.22 million to Asia, including Japan, it said.

ok, so they've shipped 100 million units, but how many of those have
been replacement units for broken, knackered ps2's etc? i'd imagine a
good 30% at least of that figure, going by personal experience.

from working for Game, while a few xbox's and cubes came back faulty,
PS2's were far more commonly faulty.

you could argue that it was proportional to total sales, but the ps2
certainly seemed to have a higher fault rate.

Can't argue with that Chris. I will say, though, that my xbox, with
the dreaded thompson drive, has the shorter life before it showed
problems. Seemed to be as games became more advanced the machines
virtually gave up. I can still run either but they are hit and miss.
San Andreas will kill the ps2 stone dead. Forza seemed to be the push
too far for the xbox.

Do we dare hope these problems will be ironed out for the new systems?
