1. Nintendo is a kids company and always has been a kids company. The Ultra
64 unit price of $250 US is aimed at the juvenile market. This translates
into about $380 Canadian. The U64 is being made for the kids by the
company that has always focused on the kids games.
2. Their $250 price tag, belive it or not, will be one of the deciding factors
of what causes the U64 to fail. Both Sega and Sony are going to be
dropping ttheur prices to meet and beat the U64. Because of Sonys already
fabulous track record of outselling the Saturn 12:1 and being THE machine
of choice on the market now, the U64 will not stand a chance.
3. It is cartridge based. This merits two problems for Nintendo:
a. How the hell are you going to store the amount of data needed for the
games of today on a measaly 4-6 megabyte cartridge? Even using the
MOST ADVANCED compression methods available today that allow a huge
70% compression rate (with some data corruption and possible degra-
ding of a long period of time) they would not be able to get a game
as big and great as Warhawk on a U64 cart.
b. The fact that it is cartridge based means that you are actually in
a sence BUYING RAM CHIPS. I know it sounds ludicrous but the chips
(ROM's) that store the game data on it are actually nothing but
silicon! To actually fit a good game on your U64 cart would mean
you would have to purchase the equivalent of 8MB of SIMM'S! This
means that the conventional U64 cart will cost: $100 US.
4. The development (programming) package for the U64 has been rejected,
spurned or just complained about by: 90% of all Nintendo developers!!
Including the self-proclaimed "Dream Team". LucasArts has already
hinted at the fact that they may be leaving Nintendo for good.
6. The "Bulky Drive" add on that will come out next Christmas will cost
upwards of $200 US! Sure this is great that now after paying YET
ANOTHER $200 you can play games that are CLOSE to Playstation size.
But does this sound a little familiar? This sounds a lot like what
Sega did with the 32X, Sega CD, Activator, CDX, Nomad, and Menacer.
Is Nintendo saying that I am goinf to have to pay $450 US to play games
that come CLOSE to what the Playstation has? For some reason I dont
think that many people will go for this. The other danger of having an
add on game medium to the U64 is that they will have to DUMP one half of
the platform to satisfy the other half. This is what Sega did ALL THE
TIME!!! You may say: "They woulnt do that. They have to support their
customers. Nintendo isnt like Sega!". Does anyone hear the words:
"Virtual Boy" on the winds???
7. The so-called "revolutionary" controller. Supposedly you can hold the
controller 3 ways. One using the "revolutionary" analog joystick and
in combo with the buttons. The normal joypad with the buttons. And
using the...joypad witht he joystick?? Last I heard most members of
the human race THAT DO <<NOT>> LIVE NEAR CHERNOBYL had only 2 hands.
The controller has FOUR BUTTONS DEVOTED TO CHANGING CAMERA VIEWS!!!
What kind of game player would want to waste their time looking at
Marios nicely shaped rear in many different ways??? A game that
allows you to look at the objects in new and interesting ways cant be
that great. It would be pretty damn boring if you ask me!!!
The other fact of the controller is that the American Arthritis Society
has OPENLY protested the controller as it contors young hands which are
still in their developmental stages to unruly positions. This can cause
excessive grinding of the cartellage and future arthritis symptoms at a
young age. Sonys controller actuall allows the hands to be relaxed and at
ease even when doing the most rigorous gaming.
8. Rehashed games. How many times have we all played Mario?? I dont really
care if Mario dances naked on Koopas head, let alone strolls around in a
3D world. Those U64 fanatics ooh and ahh so much over this so called 3D
interactive world with such great 3D effects. Play Kings Field for the
PSX. It has been out for 2 months now. And who in their right mind would
want to play a Super Mario Role Playing game???? Like I said. Kids would.
Sony And Nintendo aremnt even competing in the same market.
9. Only 2 games at the Shoshinaki show. Mario was 70% complete. Kirby ball
was a puny 20% complete. And 4 months before the release date? Sony had
tons ready.
Well, there it is.
Bye!
