Hello! First time viewer and poster to this newsgroup here. Anyways, me
and my friend are constatntly bickering over the best home version of Mortal
Kombat 2. I've never played MK2 for the aturn, but I would like to assume
it's the best. My friend says MK2 for the SNES is the best, and I'm liable
to believe him, BUT I just want to get the final word on MK2 for the Saturn.
i.e. Are the graphics up to par with the arcade? Are the characters huge
and detailed like in the arcade? How is the animation; is there a lot
missing? Are load times a problem? Well, thanks a lot for your
elp! -Aaron Lush

Why argue over MK? Every Mortal Kombat, on every sytem, sucks.

bah. how about you save your negative comments until someone actually asks
to hear them? we're supposed to help each other out on this NG, not rag on
our gaming preferences.

My recollection is the load times on both Saturn MK games are a problem,
but it was worse on one of them. Very distracting from gameplay.

Never played it myself, but if animation was missing how would you notice?
Even the arcade looked like south park for chrissakes.

I'd vote for MK II for the 32X. My favorite version of the game, which was
also the last game in the MK series I liked...

True, MK2 is very nice on the 32x, but the thing that bugs me about the 32x
version is that the sound is exactly the same as it's genesis counterpart.
Also, I was quite taken to Mortal Kombat 3, but I do understand what you
mean by saying that MK2 was the last one you liked. I honestly think it's
the best, but maybe, just MAYBE MK5 will redeem the Mortal Kombat name.

Going back to what Ted said, the load times on UMK and MK Trilogy for the
Saturn aren't the best, but I think Mortal Kombat Trilogy for the Saturn had
better load times that the Playstation version. Well, thanks a lot for your
help guys, you have just saved me some money by not buying MK2 for the
Saturn, but then again I MAY end up picking it up just to add to my
collection. Well, once again thanks! -Aaron Lush

Honestly, the Saturn version of MK2 is the worst you can buy. The main
reason is that the game loads every special move every time you do it. Throw
an ice ball with Sub Zero and the game pauses to load that animation. IT
DOES THIS FOR EVERY SPECIAL MOVE! This makes it, by far, one of the worst
conversions ever!

The SNES version looks and sounds the best. More importantly, it controls
the best too. The 32x/Genesis versions aren't bad but the control is
slightly tweaked and it's much harder to do some of the moves.

The moral of the story: get the SNES version.

One of my friends found and downloaded an unreleased beta version of MK2
for the playstation, programmed by Probe i think, and it's by far the best
home version i've seen. It's about 95% finished, the only things unfinished
seems to be a bit of touching up of some of the music, I think the fatality
music hasn't been added but load times aren't too noticeable, and there's
certainly no loading during play...
shame they never released it :(

The loading on the Saturn AND PSX (PS port was only released in Japan oddly enough) MK2s were dealbreakers, Probe really did muck it up proper (MK1 on the Sega CD was also DOA). And as for the Saturn port, there was no excuse in the missing music/sound effects from the Arcade. I'd say it's a tossup between the SNES and 32X ports, with the SNES maybe edging out because of how common it is and the controller being a bit better.

A better developer was brought in for the UMK3/MKT Saturn ports that put it on par with MKT PSX (though some sound was messed still).

They never got a proper port of UMK3 together for almost twenty years, when a Nintendo DS ('Ultimate Mortal Kombat') title was released.
