3rd strike only has ken, ryu, chun-li, and akuma from the earlier sf series.
Everyone else is new so you'd probably want to go with alpha 3 if you are
looking for the older fighters.

Street Figher 3: Third Strike

Third Strike focuses less on special multi-hit combos and gets back to
the basics of SF2. Basically, a less confusing and overall better
fighting engine than Alpha 3. However, Alpha 3 offers tons of
options, characters, and a world tour mode. In other words, although
3rd Strike has a better fighting engine, the fighting engine of Alpha
3 is far more expansive, and Alpha 3 has far more play options.

Third Strike is mainly new guys, except for Ken, Ryu, Chun-Li, and a
couple others. Many of the new guys perform somewhat similarly to
others they replaced (i.e. they have a new alien character whose arms
stretches like the indian guy). If you want the classic SF characters
you are talking about, definitely go with Alpha 3.

Personally I like alpha 3 the best, simply because of all the expanded
options, multi-hit combos and things of that nature. That and III, 3rd
strike seemed slow to me as far as the fighting and stuff went.

So exactly how many of the older characters are there on Alpha 3? Also is
the Jamaican Dude on there too?

SFIII:3rd Strike is newer, much better animation, tighter gameplay
engine, has parrying (you push forward right at the moment a punch will
hit you and you deflect it and leave oponent open for a split
microsecond), and many new and unique characters. Only three (Ryu, Ken,
Chun Li) will be familiar. And Chun-Li's moves vary quite a bit from
the "old" Sf2/Alpha Chun-Li.

Don't forget the few month-old SFIII:Double Impact, which contains the
two predecessors to SFIII:3rd Strike. It's actually better than 3rd
Strike in some importanat ways. Backgrounds are more varied and
colorful (especially in the first SFIII), the graphics are more
colorful, with slightly larger sprites and apparently slightly more
complete animation. And you can choose multiple levels of Turbo on
Double Impact.

3rd Strike really does have slightly blurry graphics compared to Double
Impact, which may in turn affect the perception of less animation (we're
talking relative, these are still the best animated 2D fighters ever).
But then you have 5 more playable characters, what sounds like better
and more varied music (to many ears if not all), and the return of
Chun-Li.

In sum, go for the SFIII series, and don't overlook Double Impact.

Everyone from SSF2T and the Alpha series is in it. So basically all the
older characters.

Chun-Li is way different than any of her old incarnation. I think people
should pick SF3 over Alpha 3 on the basis that it is a easier game to get
into, but ironically harder to master. That, and the jaw dropping animation;
liquid smooth and lots of it.

Actually, the sprites are the same size in Double Impact and 3rd Strike. One
minus for 3rd Strike are the slim vertical borders on the left and right
side of the screen. Although I do agree the backgrounds are great in New
Generation, pretty good in 2nd Impact, and kinda 'eh' in 3rd Strike. I miss
those background changes in the middle of a match (Elena's bridge drop after
round one was really neat). I also don't agree with you that Double Impact
has slightly more complete animation. Even if it is true, it's not
noticeable in 3rd Strike, and each character gained a lot more animation in
the process.

Press and hold down Start + L trigger on Controller 1 while the game boots
to the Capcom logo, and the bluriness is gone; looks exactly like Double
Impact.
So that's one problem solved. I also don't really like the harder sounding
music in 3rd Strike, but I guess people like the rap and the hip hop in 3rd
Strike, and I prefer the jazz in Double Impact.

All three games play pretty differently from one another, so I think it's
worth getting them all.
