Wow I read 20 million NES consoles were sold in the US and 46 overseas, now
what are the numbers for current systems, it does not seem to reach those
numbers if you add all the current units. where did the millions of gamers
go? did they drop out and never bothered after NES (lost interest?)

Tons of people are still 'stuck' in the last generation of
consoles--specifically, the PS1. There are millions upon millions of people
who will not pay more than $100 for a console. They picked up the PS1 when
it was under $100, and they'll someday pick up a PS2, Gamecube, or Xbox when
they're under $100--while the rest of us are eagerly awaiting the next round
of consoles, probably due not so long after the current ones hit that price.

sony sold over 80 million psx consoles last generation.
of course, many of them were sold as replacement consoles for ones that
broke.

still, they sold 80 million.

yeah, and it's happened again with ps2. I almost bought a 2nd system after the
infamous "Disc Read Error"...but I said, "fuck sony...I'm doing what I
should've done back in the 32bit era, stick with nintendo"

You want to compare the numbers, Most of my friends have PSX's that have
fallen appart over the years. However I know quite a few more with working
NES's. However the curse may not be sony, it could be disk based systems in
general, that is why I was somewhat dissapointed in nintendo's disk based
GCN decision. I play my NES every now and then. I'd like to know for
certain I can play my GCN in 10 years.

My NES still works. I've been through 3 PSXs, and 2 PS2s.

Mine is still working. As are the save features of the battery backup games.

Given Nintendo's history of nearly indestructable systems, i don't
think you have to worry. My NES, SNES, original gameboy, and N64 are
all still in new condition, and they've taken quite a bit of abuse. I
doubt Nintendo would put out a disc based system without working to
keep it as reliable as every other system they've made.

No kidding. The PSX was a piece of crap. Working in a game store that
did console repairs, we had at least one non-functional PSX a week brought
in. The biggest issue was shorted controller ports, but the laser going bad
was also a problem. In comparison, a single N64 was brought in, and it was
functional, only needing cleaning. We had a number of NES systems brought
in, and we could get most of them to work. Also, whereas all of the PSX
repairs
required new parts, the Nintendo systems typically only needed to be cleaned
or have the contacts checked.

My NES still works and the games still got their save-games intact, which
seems unbelievable to me... I think I had left zelda lying for almost 10
years and the saves weren't lost... how long can these batteries run?

Ahhh but the NES had it's own version of the disc read error. Howmany times
have you had the infamous flashing power light on your NES after inserting a
cart? Only to remove it and perform a ritual over and over of blowing in the
end of the cart and other tricks to get the game to boot up? No system is
flawess, they would have to be play tested for years to find all the
problems so consumers wouldn't find them, but by then the hardware would be
obsolete. How many of the NES 2's (small toploader) were purchased as
replacements for a non working original? It's like the proverbial tootsie
pop, 'we may never know'

My NES doesn't work and neither does my original PS, that I payed 300 for when
it first came out. Well it works, it will play games I got when I bought it
like Battle Arena Toshenden, but it won't play newer games like Tony Hawk 2.

That was pretty much an inherent flaw with front-loading systems. It didn't
connect to the pins right... The top loading model corrected it :D And you'll
note that nobody ever made a front loading cart system ever again ;)

It's one of the 1000 (IIRC) series, which had a number of problems running
newer games. Most games would lock up after a couple of hours as the
system heated up. Other games simply won't play. The 1000 series had
such a small run, compared to the other versions, that they are rather
hard to come by. Not that anyone would actually want one...

Yeah, like, the week when it was being produced? It's hard to find one NOW,
that still has all original parts. Because... They SUCK. And very few of
them
are still working well.

Mine works perfectly fine and has all the orignal parts. Sorry about my last
post about selling it. I talked to a guy at Funco Land, and a guy at Franks
Castle(the local arcade) they both offered to buy it off of me on the spot.
The guy at Funco offered me 400 and than when I said no he said 500 than I said
no and he said 600. The guy at Franks Castle offered me 900, I said no. I'm
gonna hang onto it cause I know its gonna be worth more in the future than it
is now.

Uh. If you are telling the truth, then I am at a loss for words. I can only
think that we are talking about two different machines here. The 1000
series is not worth nearly that much. The 5000/7000 series' are worth
more, because of the apparently improved laser and compatibility with
the old mod cards. But AFAIK, no PSX system is worth nearly $400.
I bought my 1000 for $30 over the summer. The store I worked for
sells them used for $49, I believe.

No offense, but it's just not possible that someone would pay that much.
Although, if you are interested, I'll sell you my 1000 for $250. You could
sell it to Funco and pocket the $350 difference. Free shipping. ;)

You know what Sega had the most reliable systems I mean the Genesis and Saturn
were prime systems, excellent, never had problems... then I bought a Dreamcast
and was like, yeah Sega's excellence with reliability has me covered. Damn
white Dreamcast wouldn't play my pack-in NBA2k GD-ROM, oh then Crazy Taxi
GD-ROM didn't work, then most of my other games worked, probably all of 'em but
after about a year and a half they began not working then system began cutting
out during play. jesus christ bananas. What a disappointment. Only optical
disk system that ever fucked up on me, even my Atari Jag CD still works, and
that is CHEAPLY constructed, press the open button, and you have to manually
lift the lid!!! I can only hope GCN is as reliable as Atari Jag CD.

That's the first i've ever heard of one messing up. There will always
be a defective unit every once in a while, even the greatest companies
mess up.
