We are about to buy our first Video game system for Christmas (both for the
kids and ourselves). We have always stuck to computer games but this year I
have finally convinced my husband that a game system would be good.
My trouble is picking a system to get. I just bought a Nintendo 64, however
now I am noticing that Playstation has more and cheaper games availiable.
Which would you all sugest...why or why not.
Thanks for your help!

------------
I don't think number of games is much of an issue anymore. N64 has a lot
of games while PSX has a hell of a lot. But a lot is still a lot, right?
N64 is sorely lacking role playing games while PSX has a large number. N64
seems to excel in the platform game area. The best platformers are N64
games, IMO. There are plenty of racers and sports titles and fighters and
shooters on both systems. N64 excels at multiplayer games (and it has 4
controller ports vs. 2 for PSX). PSX games are cheaper, no doubt about it.
The cart format has a couple of positive points, however (besides
increasing Nintendo's profits, that is). Those would be durability and
instant loading (no disc to read). No disc to read also means no moving
parts, which should say something for the durability of the console.
But which is better? I dunno, I have both and would like to keep it that
way. Overall, I suppose I spend more time with PSX games but there are
some triple-A Nintendo games that I would have hated to have missed. In
terms of "fun factor" I think the very best N64 games have an edge, but
that's pretty subjective. Besides, one person's fun is another person's
"stupid kiddy game"
I don't think you need to suffer buyer's remorse for buying what you did.
--mike g.
EB
I depends on their ages. If they are younger...go with the N64, for the
better selection of "kiddy games" and the fact the games are more durable.
Also, there is no loading time or possibility of a damaged game.
If they are a little older, you might want to think about a PSX...but the
N64 just released a few good non-kiddy games.
You did mention you are thinking about buying a PSX instead of a N64 because
of the fact that the games are cheaper. This is a great reason, but
remember this: The N64 doesn't have as many games, but the games it does
have are good. In the past few months, every game released for the N64 has
been a "hit"...or a good, fun, game. That really cannot be said for the PSX
because it releases so many. However the PSX does have its share of good
games, so don't under estimate it.
Overall, you will probably be better off going with the N64 because of its
flexibility. Plus you did say that it was going to be for you and the kids,
so the 4 player possibilities will probably come in handy :)

I dont buy this argument. I'm what you would consider "older" and I still
prefer most N64 games to PSX games, kiddy or not.

How old are the kids? Wait, how /mature/? For the younger ones that want
senseless action and pretty graphics, N64 is literally a no-brainer. If
they want a big library of games that take a long time to complete and have
a lot of depth, go for PSX.
> Thanks for your help!
I have a question for you. If you were looking for a neutral response to
this question, why would you post in three Nintendo groups and no PSX
groups? Perhaps you posted seperately, which would be an even better idea.
<sniP>
Seeing as how you can rarely muster the brain power to spell the word "you,"
and you seem to have some odd love for every $%#&ing bad game on the N64
(including Quest 64) I wouldn't doubt that you have some sort of mental
deficiency, or are at least far shot away from being an 'older' gamer (or
'older' anything, for that matter).

You bought a good system, it has at least another year of *great* games.
N64 has good resale value, meaning the carts last, so you might find a
game you really are addicted to and it will last a long time, no
scratching of the cd etc.
However the next wave of games is ease of development and since the
Sega dreamcast uses windows and other new consoles are using windows,
guess what? You make a game for a PC it will also make money with a DC
or bx.

Unlike U Andy, I only spend as much time here as I have to. I have other
things to do. If i can increase productivity even minutely by skipping a
couple letters but still getting the point across then I will do it.
As for my game list u only seem to have that much a problem with Quest 64
which some ppl happen to like. All the other games that you couldnt seem
to fathom, (5 I think) there was at least one other respose saying they
liked the game. And no that does not mean that we are teh only 2 ppl who
like it either. I've seen a few random posts including positive remarks
towards those games. Just recently, one about Tetrisphere.
Also, I belive at 21 im legally an adult so to most I would fit under the
category of "older"

When did I ever say that? My statement in my previous post is far from

Quite frankly you do not know me well enough to suggest I act older. In

Ah, not using a 32MB cart, the criteria for a great game.

A sequel! Obviously the sign of a brilliant game, Gex for example. I hate to
break it to you Trevon, but a great game does not get scores of 5.9 and
5.4 from two respected review sites [ign and videogames.com].
On 2nd thoughts, videogames.com say its primary flaw is oversimplicity,
sounds like the perfect game for you Trevon.

We don't think that. You don't have to be "Mr. Superior designer of crappy
systems/games nobody's ever heard about" to have common sense and
know how to back up your opinions and facts.
I beleive according to the upper three lines u can.
If someone has a problem with your spelling and/or grammar they may
have to take a good look at their own first. Spelling/grammar errors
do bug me, but I don't complain about it because mine isn't any
better.

Maybe doubting Andy's knowledge is a little too far, but it doesn't
change him harassing another user for doing some of the same things he
does himself. What I have been trying to say is don't call the kettle
black. There will always be someone out there who knows more than
you, doesn't like the way you post messages, etc. This is true for
everyone including me.
Now that we're totally off topic I might as well drop a hint that
maybe this group needs a mediator to stop harassing messages or off

I remember Curtis bringing it up. I dont know what either of u mean by it.
Since when did I become a fanboy? Having a list of N64 games that I enjoy
qualifies me as a fanboy?
CD's much like vinyl are vunerable to scratches and other such abuse. It's
commonly known. Yes you will scratch your games, music and pc CD's. If you
leave them lying about and don't take care of them. But then when you pay
£10 - £40 for a CD (whatever it's use) people tend to look after them.
You may want to post to a non N64 group and ask them how they

Personallly i don't get this argument,, i own about 15 games for my nintendo
and own 1 that could be considered kiddie, DKR hey it's a laugh. Most of my
games are are deep\atmospheric and keep you engrossed,,,i wouldn't play them
otherwise, well perhaps 1080 couldn't be considered as deep then:).

I use spellcheck to help avoid key slips, because I'm often too lazy to

You mean contributing to the endless slaughter of the English language and

is to be praised regardless of actual worth? You know, i just don't see it.

The cost of the Rumble Pak is offset by the requirement for a memory card or
two on the PlayStation.

Not that much higher. If you buy a lot of games (say 20-30) then it could
make a difference.

Most people have a CD player, and it doesn't take up the use of the TV.

What about the cost of a memory pak for the N64? Did we forget that?

Let's look at it like this. $20 for a quality PSX game and a $40 quality N64 game. After five games a piece, that's a $100 difference. if $100 is not much of a different to you, then you can give me the $100.

um...ok?
Sony has added alot of diversity to the video game selection. Without Sony,
many things would be left disered. Something over time would have to fill
those holes. PS just happened to come along at the right time.

I must admit I see Microsoft as evil. The way they ripped off
companies in the past like that stacker software company and the
amount of hassle I've had with windows. I really do hate Microsoft and
Bill Gates. My second most hated company is Nintendo I'm afraid to say
for lots of reasons. Extortionate pricing for a start. Nintendo have
treated the UK in an atrocious way. I see Nintendo as a bit evil and
although I love many of the games I do hate the company.
In comparison I see Sony and Sega in a far better light. I also have
no problem with Intel and think they make fine chips.
Evil? Evil is like Vlade the Impaler, Stalin etc....even the people that like
MS the least probably wouldn't go that far...

Last time I checked there wasn't a commandment that said that you have to use
MS products. Feel free to buy/use an other operating system at your leisure.
>I really do hate Microsoft and Bill Gates.
"hate"? Isn't that a little strong? I'm pretty much indifferent really. I have
a lot of respect for Gates simply because I respect the sort of people that
create/build a market and produce wealth/build the economy. Capitalism rules.

Well...yeah....

How so? I'm not disputing your comment at all, I've never been to the UK. I'm
just curious what they did wrong.

Can't we all just get along? I am disappointed with N64 considering how much
fun I had with SNES and NES, but I still dont "hate" them. Metroid 128 ought
to be pretty cool! ;)

Are they marketed well in the UK?
>I also have no problem with Intel and think they make fine chips.
yikes! A true monopoly to be sure! ;)

Well the amount of stress caused by its atrocious operating system to
so many people around the world. Millions in fact. Ok evil is over the
top but certainly MS has been a terrible influence on the world.

They stole code from another company and integrated it into its own OS
believing because of its size it couldn't be touched. This is criminal
theft and thats how I see MS as a criminal organisation.

Realistically if you want to play the latest games and run the most
software it has to be MS even though the software is pathetic you have
to have MS. If games and apps didn't need a base OS you might have a
point but they do so your wrong.

No hate is the word in my case. Evil was over the top but hate is spot
on. Capitalism is great but MS is so large that a lot of innovation is
being stifled and stolen by MS. MS isn't good for capitalism. When it
comes to computers its almost communism with a choice of one. Yeah I
know theres mac os plus a few others but there such a minority.

Well they launched the N64 at £250 (about $400). About 4 weeks later
it was £200 and a few months later £100. They really screwed the early
adoptors.
The UK N64 doesn't seem to be RGB capable at all so the display is
poor compared to PSX. Done presumably to stop you using imported games
that run at 60 hertz.
Software prices are very high with some games like Turok released at
£70 which is over $100 and general rip off pricing all the way along.
In comparison PSX pricing is much fairer.
Of course theres silly things to which aren't just restricted to
britain like tremor packs that need batteries even though the item is
connected to the mains or having to buy a memory card when the games
are supplied on cartridge and the memory should be inside every
cartridge. Not allowing a 60 hertz option in games so that UK games
play slower than japan and US.

Yeah remember the US is treated much better.

yes Sega have always been bigger than Nintendo over here. The Master
system was bigger than the NES and the Megadrive (Genesis) was bigger
than the SNES

Not true AMD are if anything tipped to move ahead at least for the
reign of the Athlon chip which is rated better than the P3. Definitely
not a monopoly compared to MS or don't you see this? If not please
explain.
