I’ve just come across some information which may provide some answers.
According to sources, theaters sending all of their EPISODE I promotion
material back to Fox in mid-January *will not* represent a reversal of THE
PHANTOM MENACE’s ad campaign. Rather, it will reflect a re-alignment and
re-organization of said campaign in preparation for some very special plans.
How so?
There is *some* indication (I would consider this tentative) that Fox plans
to re-release the Special Editions of the current STAR WARS trilogy ("A New
Hope", "The Empire Strikes Back", "Return of the Jedi") to theaters before
"The Phantom Menace" bows in May ‘99. A new EPISODE I trailer and artwork
would accompany *each* film into the theater during its run. In essence:
between January and May, the "frill" of each re-release would be the
inclusion of new artwork and a new PHANTOM MENACE trailer along with each
Special Edition re-release. Three more posters…three more trailers…then the
real thing in May
Marketing genius.

I think you may be right. I remember reading (in print - some newspaper)
somewhere over a year ago that Fox is very likely going to re-release SE
right before Episode I comes out. This would support the theory.

That would be stupid they already did that thing and now they are
going to milk it to death. By the time episode 1 comes out people will
have had there star wars fill and not care anymore. One of the factors
going for Episode 1 was that people have waited along time for some
new star wars stuff but now there going to tire the public with all
these re mastered theater releases.

Sorry, but the public eats Star Wars up like crazy. I don't think there
could ever be an overmarketed Star Wars product. There is *no* way that
people will "not care anymore" about a Star Wars movie on the big screen.

I seriously doubt that.

That's it! Having read some Star Wars newsgroups (I collect the figures),
I'd heard many different analogies for the title, but the Scooby Doo
comparison is perfect. I suspect that they'll change the title before May
21st.

Makes me wonder what my "Revenge of the Jedi" poster is worth.
Wasn't the original called something `Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope'?
That seems pretty dopey too, and hardly seems to have hurt its
popularity.... George Lucas may have lots of talents, but picking
titles obviously isn't one of them (on the other hand, at least these
are better the hopelessly market-driven titles most big hollywood movies
get!!!!)

I really don't care what they call it, I'll still go and see it. They
could call it "Star Wars: Please Don't See This Movie It's Nothing
But Wall-To-Wall Ewoks", and I'll still be there opening night. :-)

They're just staggering the ad campaign. The first burst is a teaser
and then the 'real' campaign will follow nearer the release time.
Standard advertising stuff really.
: Wasn't the original called something `Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope'?
It was retroactively attached when sequels became assured. The
original 1977 release just said "Star Wars Episode IV".

LOL!
Kim
But I still maintain my "Scooby Doo" cross-over title assertation. 'A New
Hope' does not sound Scooby-like.
Also I must interject that A New Hope was not marketed as, "Hey, go see A
New Hope" it was simply Star Wars.
The subsequent films ESB & RotJ were marketed with their titles as such. I
do agree with the poster who said that he would go see it no matter what
they called it [SW: ...all to wall Ewoks...]. I will be one of the
millions lining the streets to see this film, I will be the one with my box
of Scooby Snacks.

Actually, you are both wrong. Back in '77 (I was there on openning day when
it was only in a few theaters. It got a wider release a few weeks later), it
was simply called Star Wars. There was no Episode anything, there was no
New Hope.
The Episode IV: New Hope thing started when they re-released the film around
'79 in preparation for Empire Strikes back.
Of course this all has very little to do with N64. :)
I guess in this version, when they pull his mask off Vader turns out
to be Mr. Jones, the owner of the amusement park. :-)

SCOUBY-DOO!
It's not cool to post a cut-and-paste from a site word-for-word and not
give credit to the place it came from! (Especially when you get
caught.)
The word is PLAGIARISM. Harry's site is too well-known, dude; credit
it!
Anyway, what does this have to do about N64, etc? I can tell you for a
fact that Nintendo has already gotten the rights to release a cart based
on The Phantom Menace. By the way, that WILL be the title; check out a
different press release at starwars.com which says Luca is committed to
this title (no matter what anyone thinks of it, I guess).
I've already gotten off from work, IN WRITING, on May 21 1999. <smirk>

theaters around my town DO say "Episode One" but have no reference to
"The Phantom Menace."

Just thought I'd let you know that they did the same thing with
GODZILLA. They flooded the market with ads, posters etc. and then
pulled the lot!
It generates more interest as people want to know more :)
The name THE PHANTOM MENACE will *not* change. US Release date 25th May
1999, UK Release date 16th July 1999 - the same date as the re-release
of Disney's THE JUNGLE BOOK and BEAVIS & BUTT-HEAD 2 hit our screens
here in the UK.
