Well, I'm afraid that I'm gonna have to hang up my cape as the FAQ guy.
Life's kinda taken a turn for me in that my wife an I are now expecting
our first baby. Obviously, whether I like it or not, life it gonna take
on a big change :)
So, If anyone wants to take over the running of the NG FAQ then please
be my guest. I've pasted it below.

The alt.games.unreal.tournament2003 FAQ v1.1 Beta
Date: 13/10/2002
Author(s): Neil Brooks, [AGUT]Sauce
THE BASICS
-----------
Q. What is Unreal Tournament 2003?
A: UT2K3 is an online-biased first person shooter game. You've seen the
type before: looking through the eyes of a 'gladiator' while you
negotiate around a set arena. The aim of the game is to kill more
opponents than anyone else. If it moves, shoot it. You can also play
UT2K3 offline, using 'bots' as opponents instead of real-life players.
Unreal Tournament 2003 is the third installment from
Epic/Infogrammes/Digital Extremes which bears the name 'Unreal'. The
line is as follows:
- [April 30, 1998] Unreal. A single player based game where you take
charge of the only survivor in a 'prison barge' crash. Welcome to the
world of Na pali. You won't find any friends there.
- [November, 1999] Unreal Tournament. Voted game of the year 1999, this
incarnation is based very much more towards the multiplayer experience.
This one's still being played very much even to this day. With six
differnet modes of play, countless maps and countless mutators, Unreal
Tournament has undoubtedly set the standards for future games.
The single player experience is about to be revisited with the
forthcoming release of Unreal 2, current release target being March
2003. You can check out information on this and all the other Unreal
titles at http//www.planetunreal.com
Q. What version are we currently at?
A: Version: 2107 (120.28)
Q: When is the next patch due out?
A: There hasn't been an official release date as yet. Be sure to keep
an eye on http://www.unrealtournament2003.com/ for news about updates,
bonus packs and patches.
Q: How can I show my framerate?
A: Pull down the console using the ' key (the one with @ on it) and
type: 'stat fps'. You'll now be able to check out your framerate as you
play.
Q: Can I record/playback a demo?
A: Not as yet. This should be implemented within the next couple of
patches.
Q: How might I benchmark my system using UT2K3?
A: In your ut2003\system folder you'll see a file called benchmark.exe.
Double click this and select which screen resolution you'd like to
test. The game will then run four pre-set sequences and at the end
you'll be given two scores: botmatch and flyby. These are your results.
Q: How do I take a screenshot?
A: Press F9. The screenshots are saved to your ut2003\System directory.
These files are saved as .bmp files, which can be as big as 2.25MB.
It's advisable that you keep tabs on how many screenshots you've taken
since it doesn't take long for your UT2003 directory to double in size!
Either use a file compression utility such as winzip
(http://www.winzip.com) or convert them to .jpeg to conserve disk
space.
Q: How do the other players do those fancy flips? Are there special
moves in this game?
A: Indeed. There are a few combinations you can use to allow you to
better avoid incoming projectiles.
- The first one is the dodge: this can be done by double-tapping
forwards, backwards, left or right. This causes your avatar to leap in
the direction you double tap.
- Secondly there's the double jump: Jump as normal, and once you reach
full height, press jump again. This makes you jump twice as high and
twice as far.
- Thirdly there's the wall dodge: Jump against a wall, when you touch
the wall - dodge away from it. To get the real deal jump again right
after the dodge. You'll get the 'biggest air' with this manoeuvre.
- Finally, there's somersault. To somersault, DODGE then whilst in the
air press JUMP.
Q: What is Adrenaline and how does it work?
A: Adrenaline comes from the red and white pill-like capsules that you
see dotted around various maps (3 points) or by killing an opponent (5
points). Collect all that you see, and then once you get to 100
adrenaline (you can see your adrenaline score on the top right of your
HUD) then you can perform the following performance enhancing tricks:
BERSERK (Damage Amp): Fwd, Fwd, Back, Back
INVISIBILITY (Self Explanatory): Right, Right, Left, Left
BOOSTER (Health Regeneration): Back, Back, Back, Back
SPEED (Enhances Running Speed): Fwd, Fwd, Fwd, Fwd
Please Note that it's been reported that in CTF, flag carriers will be
invisible while the flag is not. You better run, kid ;)
Q: How come UT2K3 has three disks? Isn't that a bit much?
A: Not really. As you've seen, UT2K3 is very graphics intensive.
There's over 1.3GB of textures as well as the game engine data and
karma (how your avatar reacts to the environment), so it doesn't take
long for it all to weigh in pretty hefty.
Q: How do I spectate an online game? Can I do this in a botch match on
my local computer?
A: When you look at your server list, you'll see the 'spectate'button
to the right of 'join'. You can either watch from behind the players in
the arena, or you can 'freefly' around the map and observe from any
angle. Many people prefer to watch the game 'through the person's
eyes'. This can be done by pulling down your console and typing
'behindview 0'. To change it back, simply type 'behindview 1'
AT present, there is no way to spectate a local computer botmatch.
Q: I can't see where you register for UT2003stats... there's nowhere
obvious on the site, and I can't find an option in the game - am I
being stupid?
A: In the Network section of the UT2003 settings, you just fill in a
player name and a password. Make sure you have 'track stats' enabled.
You can also view your stats from there, but be sure to bookmark the
site to save you having to boot up UT2003 every time you want to see
them.
Q: Isn't it a pain that you have to have CD1 in the drawer each time
you'd like to play?
A: Many people feel this way. In fact, it's been noted that SecuROM:
The anti-piracy software used actually causes people's systems to
crash. There's a woraround for this. You can either use the .exe file
from the UT2003 demo (just rename the full retail ut2003.exe to
ut2003.exe.old and move the demo exe into the ut2003/system folder), or
download the NOCD crack from:
http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/agut.ng/files/UT2003nocd_patch.zip
Q: Can I change the HUD layout?
A: A little, butthe next patch hsould give more scope for Hud
customisability. Use the + key to add more items to the hud, and hit
the - key toremove stuff from it.
INTERMEDIATE
------------
Q: How can I bind keys in UT2K3?
A: There's a file called 'user.ini' in your ut2003\system directory.
This is where you can change any and all of your key bindings. For more
info, go to http://www.xxxxxxx.xxx.[Still need a comprehensive list]
You can also try http://www.ut2003hq.com/ and got to the TOOLS section
- there is a Bind Util there. Finally, speech binds can be found at
http://www.planetunreal.com/ut2003/speech/
Q: When playing online, is there a way to monitor my ping and other
network info?
A: Yep. Pull down the console and type 'stat net'.
Q: Is there a way to specify a desired monitor refresh rate?
A: Yes. In your ut2003\system folder there's a file called
'ut2003.ini'. Use notepad to open it and you'll see a line in there
that says 'DesiredRefreshRate=x' (where x=the refresh rate you'd like).
REMEMBER: Only use a refresh rate that your monitor can handle at the
given screen resolution you're running at!!!
Q. I'm led to believe that UT2K3 uses the D3D rendering system by
default, is this correct? If so, can I change it to Glide or OpenGL?
How?
A: Yes, UT2003 does use the D3D renderer by default. However, you can
change it from your ut2003.ini file. look for the following lines:
[Engine.Engine]
RenderDevice=D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice
;RenderDevice=Engine.NullRenderDevice
;RenderDevice=OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice
Just delete the ; from the renderer you'd like to use and add it to the
D3D line. Please note that it's been reported that OpenGL gives a lower
FPS rate than D3D. If you find the opposite, then please let us know.
Q: Are there any tweaks I can perform to gain optimum framerate?
A: Several. First of all, try to reduce the detail levels in the
settings section of the game. You may also want to uncheck the 'use
detail textures' option, as it only really matters if you're right up
against the wall and trying to find your contact lens. Play around with
these settings until you find a good balance of eyecandy and FPS.
Another trick you might want to try is to look at you ut2003.ini file
and search for the following line:
UseTripleBuffering=False
If your graphics card has 64meg of memory or more, you can try setting
this to true. Many people have reported a slight performance increase
with this. One final thing to look at in the ut2003.ini file is the
'MinDesiredFrameRate' line, which makes the game try to maintain your
minimum specified framerate by adjusting texture levels as you play.
Q: I'm using Windows XP and I'm led to believe that although the UT2K3
installer said that DirectX 8.1b, it actually didn't. Are there
alternative ways to manulally install it?
A: Yes, on CD3, you'll find a folder called DirectX8. Go to this folder
and find all the .inf files within - right click them all individually
and select install - one of them takes a while - restart - voila.
Q: Where can I find a complete list of console commands?
A: http://www.clanspunk.org/ut2003/console.php
Q: How do I load up a game with just me in an empty arena?
A: Easy. Just fire up an 'instant action' game and set the bot count to
zero. Very handy for learning maps.
Q: I'm thinking of upgrading my system so that I can turn all of
UT2K3's eyecandy on. What would you recommend?
A: There's no great formula for this one, but if you are going to
upgrade, buy the best you can afford.
Q: Does anyone know how to determine if a given server reports stats or
not?
A: When you select a server, look at the status information in the
lower part of the server select screen. You'll see Server Mode, Server
Admin...etc. One of the lines says "UT2003 Stats". If it says
"enabled", you are in business.
Q: I have 2 PCs sharing the same IP address. Can both PCs play on the
same internet server ?
A: Yep, as long as you have two copies of UT2K3 with their own unique
serial numbers.
TROUBLESHOOTING
---------------
Q: My system hangs after the Nvidia logo at startup. What's with that?
A:
Q: I can't seem to get a list of online servers! The screen says it's
querying the master server, but then it seems to do nothing! How can
that be?
A: It's probably your firewall. Make sure that UT2003 has permission to
go onto the internet in your firewall settings.
Q: Upaint loads but won't allow me to paint or edit in any manner. Why
is this?
A:
Q: When I join a game online, every now and then I seem to be
'teleported' back to where I was a few seconds ago and carries on from
there. Why is this?
A: This is lag/packet loss. Basically, the server has lost you, so it
puts you back to where it last knew you were. This can happen on highly
populated servers.
Q: I have made it to the final map and everytime I play it, just when I
am within a few points from winning, it goes all laggy. Why!?
A: A few people have noticed this. If this happens, you could try
pulling down the console and typing 'Flush'. This regenerates all
lighting, 3d hardware textures, etc. It can be useful to clear texture
corruption due to 3D hardware driver bugs.
Q: Has ATI and/or Epic fixed the brown screen problem on Face3 and
other levels yet?
A: This seems to be an ATI Radeon problem. So far there doesn't seem to
be an official fix for it, but we'll keep you posted.
Q: Anyone solved the problem with logitech trackman wheel not working
in ut2003?
A: First off you should go into your mouse properties window, check
that Button 2 is set to 'middle button', then make sure that 'Use MS
Office Compatible Scroll Only' and 'Scroll in Active Window Only' are
both checked.
CUSTOMISING
-----------
Q: How do I create custom skins?
A: That'll be UPaint. Found on CD3.
Q: Ooh! Those maps are AMAZING looking! Can I have a go at making my
own?
A: UnrealED is installed by default, and accessible from the Windows
Start Menu entry for UT2003. To get you started, you can have a look at
the following sites:
http://www.nikodemus.demon.co.uk/Design/Tutorials.htm

http://members.tripod.com/unrealeditor/
http://unreal.epicgames.com/
http://www.planetunreal.com/visions/
http://users.cybercity.dk/~ccc36189/
Q: The single player ladder gives you a wide range of flag insignia to
choose from for your team. Has anyone found a way to import custom-
made insignia?
Q: After you've downloaded a mutator, how do you use it in a single
play game?
A: Unzip the file (.zip file downloaded, obviously). Put both the .int
and .u files into the "ut2003/system" directory. Select new mutator in-
game asusual.
Q: Would I be right in thinking that it should be a piece of cake to
take the
CTF maps and convert them to Bombing Run maps?
Q: Server admins, What is the correct syntax for running multiple
mutators in a command line? For example in a deathmatch running
instagib and low grav.
A: mapname.ut2?game=Xgame.XDeathmatch?
mutator=XGame.MutZoomInstagib,UnrealGame.MutLowGrav
Q: Can I copy to the ut2003 maps folder and play the old UT maps?
A: No - The old UT maps are not compatible

No no, I'll definitely still be here, Sandra. I'm just now going round
and offloading the 'non essential' responsibilites that I have. It's
just that now I don't know what I'll be doing from one day to the next,
so it'd be better if someone else with the free time and inclination
took over.
I'll still have a big bullseye painted on my backside should anyone
wanna take the oppotunity to toss a few rockets at it :)
Sorry, forgot to say thanks for the well wish in my last post. Thanks
:)

Congrats!
Wish you and yours, [and soon to be!], all well for the future.
Alas, I am but too busy myself to take on the FAQ responsiblity.....

Good luck to you and your family. I'll take over the FAQ for you - I'll host
it on my own server and make sure a regular post is done to this newsgroup.

A preliminary version can be found on http://www.unrealtower.org/faq.php. An
XML version can be found on http://www.unrealtower.org/faq.xml
I'm still working on a layout, and the FAQ also needs an update - I'll do
that somewhere this weekend.

The .php version looks good!, however the .xml needs a little work, [In
IE6 I can see all the html/xml tags and with Opera everything is run into
one big paragraph].
Thanks for the FAQ hosting and picking up where Meltdown left off, much
appreciated!

Well, the XML is not ment to look pretty - it will come in handy when I want
to post the FAQ here. As you might know, XML can be easily transformed to
other formats ;-) I could add a line so that the XML looks the same as the
PHP version on browsers that support XSLT (at least Mozilla an IE do).

You're welcome. Only it would be quite hard to pick up where I left off (if
you don't understand, re-read the quoted text above)

The PHP version appears to have linewrap 'features', with Mozilla 1.1.
From the "How do the other players do those fancy flips? Are there special
moves in this game?" question, 97% of the text is linewrapped. But from the
start of the FAQ to that question, there's no evidence of linewrapping
whatsoever.
