Actually, I'm sitting here looking at this keyboard layout and it looks
pretty insane to me-the keys are too far apart to get to them efficiently-I
personally have used to use my mouse left handed-that way, I can bind
forward/backward/strafeL/strafeR to the arrow keys and have my 10-key pad
bound to the weapons based upon which number they are along the bottom of
the HUD-throw a few taunts on the 6 keys above the arrows and a couple of
actions on the keys that run along the right-hand side of the regular
keyboard (ie-shift, RCtrl, Enter, backslash) and I can hit everything I need
to in a game without moving my hand more than a couple of short inches-if
you can get used to mousing left-handed, I highly recommend this setup...

That hurts my hand trying that setup.
I use W-forward, A-left, D-right, spacebar- backward, Caps Lock- duck. And
of course all the buttons around them for alot of other stuff.
Seems very natural to both me and my husband.

If anyone wants a keypad in the UK. CPC in Preston do just a numeric keypad
that goes inline with your normal keyboard. I got One a few weeks ago, don't
know how i did without one really.

I use just the same on my keypad on the keyboard. I use the mouse left
handed, so the right hand does the controls that you list. The only
difference is that I use 1 for jump and 0 for crouch. I also have 7 for my
translocator and 9 for flak cannon.

They've got similar NUMpads at my college.. I always wondered where they got
those... Since I'm already using the numpad on my keyboard, it would be much
more efficient to use this little pad ::)

I need to find one!!

Personally I like the old style Infocom way.
U=up (jump)
D=down (crouch)
E=east
W=west
N=north
s=south

Yes it does look a bit odd and can be quite a handfull during a hot DM but
habits are habits.

My setup....

A=strafe left
D=strafe right
S=backup
F=Best weapon
E=weapon forward (in list)
R=weapon backward (in list)
C=crouch
G=voice (ie robot control in offline CTF)
Mouse 2 = forward. alternate forward key is W.
Mouse 1 = fire (normal)
Mouse 3 = jump
Space = ALT fire. (use with thumb)
T=talk
Y=team talk

Dont use the wheel found that when jumping got a little furious that I would
change weapons
when I really did not want to. Nothing like going from a flak cannon to an
impact hammer when
you least want it.
I DID have the IM explorer mouse thumb buttons setup for USE but it is to
difficult to use
that way.
All that and I'm not even ambidextrious.

Reason mvoge may not be crazy:
If you use wsad then you are most likely using 3 fingers for movement...1
for left, 1 for right and 1 for both forward and back. But to switch from
forward to back takes time! Okay, it's only a fraction of a second...but if
you think that doesn't count then you aren't playing UT (or any FPS) well.

If you use a setup allowing you to use DIFFERENT FINGERS for forward and for
back then you can reverse instantly. I have heard of some people using a key
for forward and a mouse button for back.
