Hi there,

I'm running UT GOTY 436 Linux vesion, and am fairly new to it.
The game runs fine, but I'd like to play 1-on-1 DM with a mate
from another city. The Multiplayer/Internet game options work
fine as well, but only if I want to join an already existing
online game. There doesn't seem to be an option to connect
directly to another online user, only to online games where
there are more than just me and the other guy. Is it possible
to connect directly to another computer via the internet, for a
1-on-1 deathmatch encounter?

Kind regards,

Chris Wilkinson, Middle Earth, New Zealand.

There are lots of ways to do it, but try this: Start your server (on his
end or on your end, no matter) and don't advertize it, or password protect
it. That way, either it won't be in the server list or only someone with
the password can get in.

re-reading that makes it sound confusing. Let me say that again
) - - - - Either do not advertize the game and then make sure you tell
the other player what IP to connect to. Or, password protect your game so
that only the person who knows the password can connect.

Yus, you, or him, needs to run a server locally. "Start new
multiplayer game". Then give him the IP and he can "Open Location" to
get there.

Don't run a dedicated server in another session or you'll find your
ping gets stupidly high at times.

Is there a version of UT server for linux? I'm also only using a 56k
modem, so will that have an effect?

There is a Linux version of entire UT, which includes the server and the
client. Runs a lot better than on Windoze, I can tell you that!

I don't understand you.

Yep, Meltdown's the resident linux guru.

CW> using a 56k modem, so will that have an effect?

None, other than whoever's NOT hosting the server will have a crappy
ping.

Start the UT server.
Connect, run "ipconfig" or "winipcfg" to find your netside IP address.
(If you're windows, if linux then it's "ifconfig", iirc)
Give that IP to your friend and tell him to open it.

Btw, don't add big mods or he'll have to download them. Also ensure
that UT has server rights in your firewall or he won't be able to
connect.

You are going to run a game server on a 56k modem ??? Don`t
even try it , the person connecting to your server running
on a 56k modem will get a unplayable ping of at least 600..

Surely it's no worse than playing on another server through a 56k
conn? Pings of 200-250?

With MDK 9.1 using a GeForce2 MX I get frame rates not much slower
than guys running GeForce4 MX's under Windows!

I didn't explain very clearly, cos I wasn't sure what I needed to do to
play an online 1-on-1 game. I know now that I just need to start a new
multiplayer game whilst online, and give my remote mate the dynamically
assigned IP address I'm attached with. He just needs to open that
location to join the game...

A 3rd dude might wanna join our little fragfest, so if my machine is the
host will my modem bandwidth affect game response? (we all have 56k
modems, ie...slow net access!)

Our scenery for sure is in places breathtaking, but I discovered today
that working Kiwis average only 26 paid holidays from work per year.
Only Americans get fewer holidays during their working year with 23
days, but the Italians get 41 paid holidays average per year! I'm off
to Milan or Rome!

Kind regards,

Yes he does, but he also knows that his GeForce2 MX200 32MB will
choke to death trying to render such visuals, unless I switch
everything off (negates the point of buying a game with such
improved visuals!).

A GeForce4 is in the pipeline, so until then I'll wait patiently!

*my* GF2 will choke unless *you* switch everything off? I'd like to see
you do that from Middle Earth! ;-)

I don't have any experience in this, but I can't imagine that your
friends will have a good ping. I'd stick to 1-on-1. You can always give
it a try of course to see how things work out.

Yeah, forget a third. One mate will play ok, albiet at a slight ping
increase for a normal player.

BTW, google for TNSE's netcode FAQ, it's pretty detailed. CBA to check
it myself, but ideally a server would allocate 10kBYTES/s PER player.
You have about 5, maybe a little less, so although it should be
playable it ain't gonna be smooth for your remote friend.

Sorry, I'm a bit Jekyll and Hyde sometimes...should read 'yes I do, But
I also know...'...etc...

I'm assuming that my GeForce2 MX 200 with 32MB of SDRAM is not cutting
edge enough to render UT2003 in full detail, unless I'm happy with very
slow frame rates...

I could be wrong...Linux systems surprise me that way sometimes! ;^)

Telling him your IP and having him type "connect x.x.x.x" into his console will do it (or whatever the command would be in the Unreal console). Also, the person hosting the server will have to open up TCP/UDP forwarding in their firewall or router to their IP on their LAN. I think the port for UT was 7777
