I've noticed that UT99 likes to freeze every so often, usually when
there's lots of explosions going on (we're using the UT4Ever mod, so a
lot of baby nuke-ems get thrown about). I'm wondering if there's some
tweaking I can do to avoid this.

Thanks,

Not without better knowledge of what's going on. At best, you could
try reducing detail levels, or switching renderers.

If you still have problems with the software renderer, you may have
some background application that's slowing you down (usually some AV
software.)

Some more info:

I have a GeForce 6600GT w/128Mb or RAM.
My machine's running XP and has 1Gb or RAM and is 1.5GHZ.
I'm using Direct 3D as that's the only one (aside from the software
renderer) that seems to be supported.

The freeze is always preceded by the screen getting rather bright,
which is why I thought it might have been due to explosions.

You'd think that a newer machine would run UT99 smoothly, but
apparently not.

You should ensure that you use the latest graphics (currently 93.71) and
DirectX (9.0c) driver available. Maybe this will help.

That is strange, but may also be a coincidence. Things to start (just
guessing):
* Can you reproduce it in any way (causing explosions? ^^)
* Does this happen only in UT or in any other game?
* Have you tried using the software render instead of Direct 3D (as Raymond
already suggested)?
* It's most likely not the problem, but check the temperature of your GPU if
possible, maybe something's wrong there.

Well normally they do ;-)

I'll check, as even though I think I'm up to date, one never knows.

This happens only in UT99. It's happened not only on this current
machine, but an older machine of mine.

I may have to try this just to see if it happens there.

Are there any programs to check this?

I only seem to have trouble with UT99 freezing and as I mentioned
earlier, it's happened on various machines I have owned during the
years.

Could it be because I'm hosting as well as playing?

Thanks for the info,

As I said, it's most likely not the problem. First you should check the
graphics driver options by right-clicking on the Desktop and choosing
Properties -> Settings -> Advanced -> GeForce XXXX. Maybe you find a sensor
value there. Otherwise, your graphics card might not have a sensor or you
can for example use Everest Home Edition (do a Google search), it will
display the sensor value if available (in the program, navigate to
Computer -> Sensors). The value should not exceed 65-70°C.

Hmm then it's probably a software problem...

The PlanetUnreal forums seem to keep posting this link from time to
time - there seems to be varying problems with the default renderer
but it somehow is fixable.

Probably a driver issue - if you had some ancient drivers, I suspect
UT99 may run well.
