For developper, the whoole source code and a complete set of utilities (for
viewing/editing the World, Town and converting original graphics in bitmaps)
are available: http://www.chez.com/pgo/Ultima/U1/en_Developer.html only in
English even if my mother language is French. If some Dragons or Magicians
want to joint the developer corner, I will exchange many more informations
also on other Ultimas.
the title is copyright (c) 1987-1987 Origin Systems, Inc.
At least, in the version currently available.
I don't think it can be counted as abandonned software yet either, as it
was featured on the Ultima Collection CD a few years ago.
I'm not trying to be a killjoy, just trying to let people know that
Origin may not want people to publish this. They were heartily annoyed
when Ultima 4 started apperaring online, although they will now let
people download it for free.
Not so. All the Ultimas are still under EA's copyright, and are
likely to remain so for quite some time. Even U4, which UDIC members
can distribute under a couple of conditions, is not excepted from
this.
>There are people that are making a Ultima 1 in today's engine.
>Better graphics and first person experience and all.
IIRC, that team actually got in touch with EA regarding the project.
It's possible the U1 re-creator did, too, but that I don't know.

Well what did they expect? They should have realised that the game was
going to be pirated in huge numbers after it appeared on that CD.
yes, but my point is that Ultima 1 was never released for free.
This is cool. :) It means that U1 will now work on platforms other than
DOS/Windows.
If you need a hand with the graphics formats, data files, logic, etc of
other Ultima's I've disassembled most of 2, 3, and 5.

It would probably have been better had he require you to supply the data
files yourself, as opposed to including them with the port.
OTOH, Ultima III has been ported to the Macintosh -- and he charges for it!
I don't expect a so large stream about my applet. Here, some of my answers
about so questions:
1. Copyright issue.
> Some data files are copied from the original work of Richard Garriott and
so it's under copyright of him or one of its fromer companies (Origin,
Electronic Arts, or else). Following this, I have no authorization to use
this files. You should have this files from an official source. For my point
of view, I don't found in non English speaking country (France) an official
source!!!! None of the datas are included in the distribution files zip or
cab, but can be accessed through the applet which load them from the site (I
should/must remove the addtional zip which includes these files).
> On the java code, this is an original work of me without any
re-engineering, decompiling, or dissassembling. The applet and its source
code are distribued under GPL (see source code).
2. Trademark issue.

Ah, good. I was hoping you'd make owning the original game a
prerequisite for the applet. Thanks for clearing that up.
