-A very disapointed Merlin Dragon
Well, the official ending goes something like this: The Avatar
becomes the Ether Titan, leaves Pagan, and ends up on the Guardian's
homeworld, which just happens to be Britannia. <shrug> The ending
sequence was short because of space requirements. Remember, U8 was
shipped on floppy disk.... Of course, that's no excuse for the
ending's being vague as all hell. :-P

Do NOT forget they were to make this ultima 8 part 2 (the lost vale),
which should be behind the doors in a cave next to Mythran's house.
This would probably have explained much.
But because of Ultima 8 being not nearly as enjoyed as Ultima 7 and 7.5
they did not release the lost vale. In fact there is a petition for that
going on right now, so if you want to know what happened to Pagan, sign
it maybe they will once release the lost vale.

<sigh> Lost Vale was hardly Ultima 8 Part 2. Rather it was an add-in
similar to Forge of Virtue and Sliver Seed. We would've just learned
a bit more about the Zealans, powered up, and nabbed a nifty weapon.
Sorry, but that's not worth U9 being delayed for several months.

It's called suspense. Okay, so it was a little short on facts, but how is
the Avatar supposed to know what happened to Pagan anyway? He is no longer
there. The Avatar's clothes are obviously Ethereal Titan clothes. We have
had confirmation from Origin that the place where he lands IS Britannia.
You have to think about what you did, and draw conclusions. You want
everything handed to you on a plate? The U8 endgame made me think, and for
me, that is far more valuable than having ultimate resolution. I enjoy
thinking, mulling over (before I knew) where I was, who could have carved
that mountain in the shape of the Guardian. I was clearly in hostile
territory, the Guardian was in control. This was to be the stage of the
final climactic battle between me and the Guardian, and I was giddy with
anticipation.
I thought it was a GREAT endgame, I was playing U8, thinking it was a bit
crap. Then I finished, and was filled with an incredible yearning to play
U9. Now that's what I call marketing.

I completely agree but hope the lost vale will come out sooner or later
as I feel it is part of the Ultima series just as much as U9 and
especially while they could make U8 a more ultima-ish game with the
add-on!!!
Uh huh. Yeah. Well, believe me, I like to think, too. I've
played every ultima made. Since 1985 I have been a fan of the ultima
series, and I have seen every ending of every game. This one was
probably the shortest one yet, that I can remember. It would have been
nice to have a longer one, perhaps as a little more reward for the
completion of an average game. The ending was by no means spectacular,
and the u7 series smoked it. That's my opinion. As for marketing, I like
playing games, not watching commercials.
-Merlin Dragon
Sure about that? They had originally planned to make it the Guardian's
homeworld (AFAIK). They then changed their minds and made it Britannia.
I don't think there was any implication that Britannia WAS the Guardian's
homeworld.

What IS it you want from an endgame? The percieved deficiencies in the
endgame were largely due to the deficiencies in the game itself. Tacked
onto the end of a better game, the endgame would have been perfect.
I'm not really sure what an endgame is for, I guess it varies, but I don't
think length is important (U1-4 didn't really suffer).
-Merlin Dragon
Maybe it all is just a horrible drive in movie the avatar stepped into.
ya. thats it.

Well..actually, Origin themselves were quite confused on the point until
they started finalizing the plot for Ultima 9. At the end of "Pentology:
Ultima VIII Cluebook" it clearly states something about walking through
the black gate/obelisk and arriving on the Guardian's Homeworld to take
the battle to him. Now..a lot of people can make veiled references and
theories thinking that maybe the Guardian is FROM Britannia, etc..but I
just think Origin had no idea which one they were going to do for a
while. Maybe that's why the endgame for Ultima VIII was so..obscure..
Origin : "Okay..so..in Ultima IX..are we going to have the Avatar begin
in Britannia or where the Guardian lives?"
Other Origin : "Dunno..make it a big red place. Then we can go from there."
Tech Dragon
PS: I think the best thing about Ultima VIII was the speech pack. After
I installed it, and then replayed the game..I was stunned. Not really
because of the voices for the Titans..those were lame, and the voices for
the Pagan Gods sounded apathetic about the whole situation..what really
kicked was the Guardian's voice..back to taunt you after Ultima VII.
"Oh Avatar, you should really hear their cries for help."
"Britannia BURNS."
"Your people cry out for your help Avatar."
Just wonderful stuff like that gives the game a stronger sense of urgency
and suspense. You're just lollygagging around, taking 5 hour breaks
every now and then to rest and all of a sudden the Guardian starts
telling you about how he's gonna take care of Earth after Britannia and
you kinda start getting your act together. :)
Again,
Tech Dragon
