Here is my complaint mail to OSI :

2 days ago, i was having a friendly chat with what i first considered as a
new found friend. He told me that he would hook me up with a certain 3rd
party program to help me in UO, without giving the details. Because I
usually have my virus detector on but turn it off during UO, i was not
thinking. I ranned the program and nothing happened, so I shrugged it off.
While i was a work and not playing UO, i started thinking to myself what if
it was a trojan. When i went back, i immedietly scanned my PC, and sure
enough, it was a virus nammed "SecretAgentDat2" (i was expecting netbus/back
orifice). When i logged my UO character on,I found myself in bank of
Britain, which i have never been to. I checked my bank, and was devastated
to find that my life savings has been robbed. All my 1 months worth of work.
I immedietly contacted a GM, who shrugged me off, he's name Omaha or Omaga
or something like that. He told me to go to support.owo.com and read FAQ. If
i wanted to write something, I would have gone to that URL, i wanted to talk
to him instead. He then put me on ignore list. If this situation isn't
important enough for him to discuss with me, what is ?I wanted to ask him if
he can track the last login and from where. I'm not too bothered with the
atitude of that lame GM. I'm more concern with the fact that I have certain
information about that person who hacked me. I have his ICQ number and his
Guild's URL, and his email (if legit). I also have that trojan file and
would like to know what is OSI gonna do about this ? Other people will be
fooled into it too if nothing is done about it.

Running an .exe from ANYONE (even someone you know) is a real bad
idea......I guess you know that now tho huh. If you did not download it your
self and know where it came from don't run it.

I agree with this, but realize that there are times when it is not
neccessary to follow these precautions. As an example, a friend and I
regularly collaborate on coding projects, and the quickest way to have the
other see what you've done is to send them an .exe. Sure, I could just
get the source and compile myself, or vice versa, but the .exe is much
more expedient, and reliable, as well (there are about three people online
that I would knowlingly trade binaries with and trust them).

I have actually talked to Elder Counselor Bakura about this very topic.
Here are the procedures to take care of a hacked account:

1.. Read the Security FAQ at http://support.owo.com/faq_sec.html
2.. Contact the authorities regarding the incident (file a police report)
3.. Have the police fax Origin Systems, Inc. at (512) 795-8014 to get the
IP information if the person logged into the account.
4.. Proceed to fully clean the system as to rid it of all possible bugs and
programs.

No items lost due to the hacker can be replaced, but hacking and sending
viruses is a very serious legal crime. The offender can be fined, do jail
time, or both.

I hope this helps you out.

Take care,

FIRST OFF!!!!!!!!:

As far as I'm conserned, i would ignore you if i were the GM too.
Secondly, unless you log every download or transfer your computer makes. You
have no proof whatsoever to give these people. And third
If i found someone as blatantly stupid as you, i might try it myself.

Don't listen to him Rubik. Everyone makes mistakes. Just be careful who
you receive files from. Use your virus scanner to scan EVERYTHING and make
sure that you keep your virus definitions current.

No...

The rule #1:
(sorry for the caps)

NEVER NEVER NEVER ACCEPT EXECUTABLES FROM PEOPLE WHO YOU
DON'T KNOW _IN PERSON_!!!!!!!

I could make a small program that whipes your entire drive in a couple of
minutes
that wouln't be detected by _any_ virusscanner! There are also loads of
trojans just
like BO and NB out there that aren't detected bij your scanners. It's just
the way
scanners work. A scanner either needs to 'know' the virus/trojan (Have a
signature
in it's database) OR examine unknown programs for virus-like behaviour
(Heuristi-
cal scanning) like loading itself in memory and searching for executables.

Don't take the risk. Download your stuff from well-know websites (And still
scan
them) but NEVER run programs that are sent to you, there are just too many
11yr old jerks out there that get a kick out of your HD being whiped.

I have gathered some information regarding this hacker. His UO name is
GregTampa--PK, on Cheasapeke. Last night, i went to Britain to look for him.
On 3 different occasions, 3 different people told me they knew him because
their account/friends account was hacked by him. One of them told me that
this is considered damage of property and has reported it to the police,
because this hacker deleted 3 of his GM characters.

You have now experienced, the hard way, the trouble that can come from too
much "internet trust." Trust no one. One of the most ingenious things about
the recent "Melissa" virus was that people have been told for years now
"Don't open attachments unless you know the sender." Well, "Melissa" used
your mailing list to propagate itself, so the people you sent to would open
it (after all, they know YOU wouldn't send them a virus, right?). Trust no
one. Virus scan everything; and make sure your virus definition files are up
to date.

Caveat Emptor is probably what the GM was thinking. You didn't virus scan
the file that was sent to you, so you got what you asked for. I don't mean
to sound cruel, but trust no one. Heck man, I don't even trust the people I
hunt with. You never know...

Post it! Post it! Let other people know about it. Why didn't you post it
in this missive?? If you want someone shunned, you have to cough up the
data. Just one point: make sure that your data is correct. The ICQ number
should be; I haven't heard of a way to fake an ICQ number (if you pulled up
this guy's stats and didn't rely on him sending you a number). That's
doesn't mean there isn't a way to fake an ICQ number - I just haven't heard
of one (yet).

> I also have that trojan file and

What will Origin do about this? Well, if you ship the data to the company
address, or send it to the support mail address, maybe they'll ban this guy.
And maybe not. They might be thinking "caveat emptor" too.

Sorry that you were had, Rubik, but life goes on.
