Yes, that's why you should not 'save password' in UO....
If you do it's stored in a text file protected by a simple cipher (read:
if a Ha><0r gets that file they can get your account information almost
instantly)

Hmmmmm........

OK, I must admit that I was stupid enough to contact this guy. He
sent me a little prog which I tried to run, once again in an
inexplicable lapse of good sense on my part. It didn't do anything
but generate illegal operation errors and didn't show up as a virus
with the latest definition files. I suspect from the questions he was
asking me and from the fact that he was "looking to buy" a good UO
account a few days ago on this same group that this is some sort of
exploit to steal UO resources off of my account. It pretty obviously
didn't do what it was intended to do.

At that point I refreshed my news client and got the warnings posted
above. When I confronted him about this he said that he had never
specifiaclly SAID he was an employee of Tugsoft which, when you reread
his post, is technically correct. That doesn't make his situation
better, though, it makes it worse. There are two possibilities here:
either he was inviting people to share illegal software via ICQ or he
was sending people viruses/exploits disguised as illegal software via
ICQ. Not only was this a pretty crappy exploit/virus if indeed it was
one, I notice from his original post that he was dumb enough to leave
an apparently real e-mail address attached to his news client before
starting this pathetic little escapade. Congrats, Alex, you're about
to get TOS'ed.

I'd like to invite anyone else who cares to write to ab...@pacbell.net
and complain about this person's behavior (ahin...@pacbell.net). I
think that documented evidence of illegal behavior should be enough to
give him the boot, but multiple complaints always help!

Get 'the cleaner' from www.moosoft.com and scan your C: drive...
I bet it'll find the subseven trojan in an exe file in your windows
dir...
Also if you look at what's defined as 'application' file type, the name
of the server program will be listed there...
Funny that an application needs a helper file every time it's run?

I actually just DL'ed and ran Norton, and it didn't see a thing.
That's why I didn't think it was a virus. Gonna check the other
program out though.

Next time your on the internet don't open up anything like IE of
ICQ.....just connect then go to an MSDOS prompt and type "netstat"

This will tell you what programs are opening up connections on your
computer....look for a strange one with port 27157...or something high like
that...

Also make sure you not using anything that would use a connection so you
don't have 10 million to sort through....also check the little icon near the
clock for activity and also your modem ligts for activity when their
shouldn't be...

If you need any more help ICQ me at 72613004 and I'll be happy to help

It's actually cable, so I'm always on the internet. Netstat came up
with :

TCP anonymous:1392 apollo.rdc-kc.rr.com:nntp established

which I suspect is just my link to the server.

If you're connected via cable or DSL (even if its only a
dial-up it ain't a bad idea), I am assuming you have a firewall
installed. Make sure that you have it configured so that nothing can
"dial out" without your permission. Also make sure that it is
configured for an immediate alert in case something does try to access
your system. On the average, I usually get 1 or 2 attempts a day from
"keyboard monkies" scanning systems looking for one infected with
either the SubSeven or UDP Trojan Horse, not to mention the 1 or 2
port probes that are not innocents or false-positives from my server,
etc. So, make sure your firewall is properly configured. Also, I have
my virus scanner configured to scan any and files I download as they
are being downloaded.
Just a few suggestions and I am sure others with more
knowledge than I will offer some also.

Am I the only one who is surprised that UO has a viking sword, but not a
viking helmet? :)

Really...? That's interesting to know. Perhaps it is possible to make a
"Viking" UO guild that sails around on one of them Dragon ships ;)

Oh no dont say that. In making a trojan you should allways make the user
think either the program does something usefull (works as stated) or that it
crashes and for some odd reason doesnt work.
If it just runs and nothing happens then ppl will suspect,
Point being.. the crash might very well be intended and fake
Check with netstat if any listening ports is running..
