There's a bit in Cold War where you have to drop into a chasm for some
goodies which kills you unless you're at 100% health and find the lowest
point to drop from, in the end I found a way down it via the wooden
platform and later saw Stella's Walkthrough which showed two more ways
down from the other end.
I've now found a similar death defying drop at the end of Furnace of the
Gods which isn't mentioned in the walkthrough I was reading. In the final
room (excluding from the cage bit) there are two seemingly inaccessible
pillars with frozen warriors on top, and I was wondering if anything might
make them wake up. I decided to try and visit them on their plinths to see
if they did anything.
You can't get to them with the fly patch because they're surrounded by
molten gold and you burn up if you fly over such stuff. So I had to do it
the hard way.
The first one was easy, climbing the corner blocks, a simple running jump
from a block slightly above reached the plinth. Nothing happened but there
was still one to go. Jumping back to continue the climb was equally easy.
The second pillar seemed increasingly impossible the more I looked at it.
From the ledge with the secret it didn't look too bad but the jump was four
units diagonally and I kept falling short. The only alternative was from
the ledge higher up, but it was an awfully long way down! I tried a safety
drop, sliding down an almost vertical bit to grab the edge below from where
a backflip might do the trick but depending on exactly where I slid it was
either impossible to grab the edge at all, or else if I did manage to grab
it I got stuck, unable to move or pull up.
So the only option seemed to be to slide and try to backflip just as I
reached the edge, however although I did indeed usually land on the plinth,
time and again the drop killed me. I also tried sliding forward but
couldn't get Lara to jump outwards from the almost vertical slope, she
would just plummet.
I don't know how long it took me but in the end I found that if I slid down
the very left hand edge, and did a backflip at exactly the moment I reached
the end of the slide, it was possible to land on the plinth alive, albeit
with flashing zero health like the Cold War jump.
So did the warriors wake up? Did they f...
Oh well.
WELL?!?! DID they do anything more than act like statues???? And what is
that "f..." about? :-D
I'm starting to get serious about slapping some older stuff together with
good ol XP Pro x86 on it. At least that should run the installers for the
games. XP Pro x64 doesn't. :(
McG.
Get on with it McG! I'm playing TR1 and TR2 here and there at the moment.
Great fun. TR2 Gold is installed, but I haven't got to that yet (did it
before though).
;)
I've just had another go at forward jumping to the plinth and finally
managed it. You stand at the right hand edge (as seen facing the plinth
- ie. left edge if you were dropping backwards as originally described)
and simply step off. You land about a foot from the bottom of the steep
slope, at which point you have to *almost* immediately jump forwards,
landing neatly on the plinth. The "almost" is crucial: if you do it at
once you're too high and crater on landing on the plinth, but if you
delay more than a fraction of a second you slide straight off the edge
and plummet into the molten gold in front of the plinth.
I just downloaded the gold levels, you need the original TR2 installed
though, it uses the same sound file for instance and some of the same
monsters with a few cosmetic changes.
Pic so you can visualise what I was talking about in my original post...

you can just make out the transparent warrior on the pillar below which I
wanted to reach.
So Lara can't slide down backwards and grab the ledge, pull up and back flip
off the ledge?
