First thing I read this morning was this! Absolutely fantastic news! Wow!
Too many exclamation marks!

It was all worth it. Ion Storm and Eidos listened to the fans and
delivered. A big thanks to them!

Wow. The community will probably loose its mind, and I just _know_ that the
first crazy taffers are already working on Fan Missions on the new editor :D
I know I'll be looking hard into it, hoping I can get familiar with it soon.
I have tons of ideas of my own, and have been putting off starting real work
on one idea I've been toying with for over a year since Null said last year
that there was a good chance that we'd get the editor at the end. I want to
make it with the TDS editor.

Amazing. I'm just really happy for the community, knowing that this will
strengthen it and further stimulate (as if it needs it) it -- and the Fan
Missions for TDS? I don't even dare to dream what might lie ahead of us.
The community has shown such creative talent that with modern tools nothing
is beyond them.

Keep of taffin', taffers!

fantastic good news!

Now I'm just looking forward to the FM's! :D

Strange ... why a special deal with GIGA.DE? If there's money involved,
there would be far more sites involved ... and if there's not, why Germany?
Personal contacts? Why no US site? Is this some kind of skunk work editor?

I'd like to know more about the thinking here ... has there been any
notes from Eidos? Nothing obvious on the .com and .de sites as far as I can
see, but then it is not expected until next week. Then anything can (and
usually does) appear on Internet news and forums. Even on the TV.

Personally, I'd wait for an official press release (or something of that
kind) and an official download site before I join the jubilation.

* * *

There is a later post on the GIGA forum with three links 'for those
who can't wait until friday', and that makes me even more suspicious:

http://www.fileplanet.com/150454/150000/fileinfo/Thief:-Deadly-Shadows-Editor
http://files.filefront.com/Thief_Deadly_Shadows_Editor/;3815024;;/fileinfo.html
http://thiefmissions.com/torrents/thief3editorrelease_jan2005.zip.torrent

If these are real, the story told so far doesn't tally (but at least
it's not Eidos' story). And if they're real, the file name (which on all
three sites seems to be 'thief3editorrelease_jan2005.zip') doesn't make
sense either.

If they're faked, they can be anything, even trojan horses.

Take care.

No, I think I'll wait for next week.

Check out the TTLG forums. There are taffers there, namely Gingerbread Man
and David, both TTLG forum admins who have been working with Alex Duran,
Jordan Thomas, and Paul Weaver of Ion Storm, and with Scott Holbert of Eidos
Interactive, to get the editor released. It this release wasn't legit,
don't you suppose they'd have said something about it by now, instead of
promoting it and announcing it?

As said, check out the TTLG forums:
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=93994

It's legit.

More good news. There's a taffer on the TTLG forums who goes by the
nickname Krypt, who says he (?) was a former Ion Storm Austin developer. He
had this to offer on the topic of limitations/restrictions that they had to
work under while developing the game:

Krypt on restrictions: "The big one was getting a map to fit into the 64mb
of memory on xbox. That is the reason why all the maps are fairly small.
Since the fans will only be making maps on PC, there are no memory
restrictions and you should be able to make much larger spaces with higher
res textures, more unique static meshes, more different characters, etc.
Also we had to really limit the number of lights and amount of detail in any
given scene in the map so the xbox framerate would be decent. Fans should be
able to add a lot more detail and do prettier lighting because PCs run the
game faster."

Whee! :D

There're bound to be limits to the engine, so I don't think we can expect
just anything, but certainly more than what we've seen in the TDS. Larger
levels at least, better lighting, higher textures etc.

Regarding The Seventh Crystal, I don't know what Saturnine's up to, but I
just read on the TTLG that Purah (of Calendra's Legacy fame) is working on a
new mission, and not on the Dromed. If he's really working on a mission,
and on the new editor..... that would be something to look forward to, to
put it mildly. He does have a day job, though, working for another studio
if I recall, so I wonder where he'd find the time.

Odd, isn't it? That those of *all* people don't get the scope.

Yes, if there was something definitely wrong, I'd expect them to speak up.
They haven't. (Any Eidos or Ion Storm person may be under other restrictions
-- some information *must* come from corporate public relations, after
going through corporate security. Let's hope this is not one of those.)

On the other hand, if it was a legit release, I'd also expect them to
confirm it. And they haven't done that either. (Indeed, Gingerbread Man says
the announcement was the first he heard of it, but that he assumes it's for real.
His post about tutorials merely indicates that there has been work going on,
but not that this is that thing. If this *is* the thing, surely those
tutorials are included? [See below...]So I'm not sure how far his 'SO NEXt
TIME WE TELL YOU EVERYTHING'S COOL, MAYBE YOU'LL BELIEVE US.' post actually goes.)
No post by null so far as I can see. And no post by any poster who seems to actually
have a clue what is going on, and doesn't just repeat the stuff posted on
giga.de or said in other threads.

Particularly, I'd expect these people to explain why a release that is
supposed to come next week from Eidos(?) was pre-released in Germany by NBC,
and even then the binaries are available for download already before that,
and not from Eidos or NBC as far as I can find. And perhaps also why they
of all people didn't have the information.

I have been going over the NBC/GIGA site for an announcement --
surely they would make one there, and not only on the TV program?
So far I haven't found any.

... At this point I broke down and downloaded the archive from filefront,
and unpacked it *very* carefully.

No README.TXT file, no installation script. And poking around among
the files that actually *are* included, I get very cold feet indeed.
This looks like a skunk release, or possibly something from a hacked
server: there's too much here that shouldn't be. NO documentation at all?
What kind of release is that? (No, I won't fire up any of the binaries.
There's something called Ion Launcher.exe that *might* be an installation
script, but as I have no reason to trust it, I won't run it.)

And no, no tutorials either.

I hope I'm wrong and just nastily and inordinarily suspicious -- I'd
be happy to eat crow over this. But this goes right off my disk until I
learn that it is the real stuff from a source that seems trustworthy. If
everything *is* on the square, that information should appear next week,
right? I can wait until then.

(Lots of clippin')

Anders, I think you're overly paranoid. Being careful is a good thing, but
I think you're making something out of nothing.

What comes to the tutorials, they do exist. A whole bunch of them, in fact.
They are all on the TTLG Thief III Editor's Guild forum. GBM, David,
Ulukai, Alex & Co. have been secretly working on them since October 2004.
There are, as far as I understand, also a couple of tutorial levels in the
T3Ed distribution. That is _much_ more than what we got when the Dromed was
first released, when we really had nothing much else than the editor itself
to start out with. You have to understand that this is a gesture of good
will more than anything from the devs part. Basically, we get the tools but
are left to our own devices as to what to do with them. Also, the T3Ed
shares much that is common with the Unreal Ed, and there are many, many
tutorials for that, so it really isn't necessary to hack together much of
the same basic material simply for T3Ed's sake.

Also, had you visited the TTLG forums to read about what's being discussed
about the editor release, you would've probably noticed this comment by
David: http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94006. The readme file
was missing from the package, but it's been made available on the TTLG.

There are tons of possible reasons why this reached the German site first --
who know what they ultimately are. It doesn't make any difference, and in
fact, I don't care. The editor is being distributed by just about every
gaming related site out there as we speak.

Of course, everyone is free to be as suspicious of the legitimacy of this
release as they like, but I just don't see that there's much reason for it.

With the exception of The Cradle and The Clock Tower,
I didn't find T3 to be as fun as T2. Granted, the graphics
were nicer, but you can't beat vine or rope arrows.
But then, T2 didn't have the lame wall climbing gloves

The FMs I'm working on (hopefully done by June) rope
arrows are pretty much a necessity.

Well actually that's one of those great ironies of life. In much the
same way that our very own Nightwalker - the beta tester and FM
