There is a nice lot of overhead work in the quest for the Paw, but
there's an area which looks possible yet I can do it...

spoiler...

Dislodging the big gear wheel opens up a route that leads out onto a big
pipe. Following the pipe to the end gives you a jump down onto a
platform that gives access to the river and from there to the shaman's
room. But it looks as though there should be access too from the pipe
right across to the opposite derelict wall, and maybe from there to the
'roof' of the sleeping quarters. I've never found a way to cross the
gap, though. Has anyone?

Well, if I understand you, at the end of the pipe you can either descend
to the river, or look over a short wall to a platform. Go to the platform,
and then there is a gap where you can jump across the passage. Once across,
there is a candlestick to pick up sitting on top of some boxes on the
rafters. This the area you talking about?

BTW you don't have to knock the gear off the roof (which kills a pagan).
There's a ladder by the pipes in the other room.

I don't think it did this time -- they were all trying to track down a
noise arrow.

I believe I know where you mean, which isn't where I mean...I think.

Get past the gear. Go through a small industrial room. Pick up a
statue.

Head out onto a thick pipe, head left. You're right above the river,
and under open sky.

At the end of the pipe you can jump down, north, onto a platform above
the path. There is an open portcullis ahead, leading into a 'room'
where a guard comes p/eriodically to warm his handsies. However, head
through the big window on your left and you can go down as a metal ramp
to the river.

HOWEVER... just before you reach the end of the pipe there's a big tree
growing into it, on the right, and it looks as though the right jump in
the right place to take you onto various tantalising walls. No loot is
visible.

I like this level, because it offers various ways to sneaksies...

Yup, I know where you mean. I got onto the wall and slightly into the tree
but don't
think you can get further that way, maybe there's another?.
Although, I have been pulling off some fairly spectacular
leaps and things with the climbing gloves, I may go back and have another
peek.

PS. a thought just occurred to me....do trees burn?

I spent a lot of time yesterday trying to get there but failed. I had
seen that enticing roof early on, but gave up trying to get there as
it made too much noise when jumping on the metal pipe. Later on when
I discovered I was short some loot I tried again, over and over. I
suspect it's impossible, and I found 100% loot without getting there.

There was also the earlier area at the very start by the miners that
had me wondering. You can climb up on some boards, then onto a pair
of crates. From there it seems like you can jump onto a ledge which
leads further on, but I can't make the jump. There's a square piece
of wood which seems purposely placed to prevent this :-)

On the whole, I'm pleased with Thief 3 so far. I had glumly expected
a more two dimensional approach to exploration, ala Deus Ex 2. But
I've done ok in the third dimension. I'm tending to start exploration
from the top and working my way down, on the assumption that guards
never look up...

I certainly like the Paw mission, which is packs quite a lot of play
into small space. I've yet to find more than 90% loot in there, though

I refuse to finish a mission before 100% loot, which can be a bit
frustrating at times as it can take almost as much time to scour all
the corners as it took to finish the main objectives. In the Paw
mission there were two items in lying in the open that I think were
difficult to see or recognize.

I was re-playing the Paw mission yesterday, motivated by this thread, and
found some loot that I had missed the first time round. I remember that
you're pretty darn good at finding all the loot in missions, so you may have
found this already.

In the very beginning of this mission, when you start and take the path to
the left from the clearing with the thugs and the fire, not too far ahead
you'll find the path ramps up and another path goes to the right. At the
intersection there's kind of wooden scaffolding, supporting beams and planks
that you can mantle on. Climb those, all the way up and there're two
stacked-up boxes, and a small goblet on top of them.

I completely missed out on that the first time I was playing. I agree, the
Pagan mission is a pretty good one. You can do quite a bit of climbing,
which I like!

Got that one, but thanks! A crafty one...

A sweep tonight saw me right -- I picked up one I'd plain forgotten
about, and one that doesn't look like loot until the glingle fairy
chimes...
