Even BRAND NEW PC's often come with drivers that are out of date, so its
very likely that yours are. Updating a driver is pretty simple, and a good
place to start. The NUMBER 1 tip is to make sure you:
A. Have the original driver on disk or CD - just in case
and B. Make sure you select the right driver to update.
Just go to the website and follow the instructions. Here is a link for your

I'm having a problem with Thief one. It keeps crashing to the desktop.
Its driving me nuts. I love the game and just when it get interesting
it crashes. I've rebooted I've shut off all running devices. I've even
tried my patented mystical computer dance to make this game work. And
all to no avail. 8(
I feel like I keep getting thrown out on my ass. 8)
Can anyone help me with this problem? It would be greatly appreciated.
I have a 32 MB Diamond Viper V770D Ultra NVIDIA video card
Is that the problem? I just bought this computer about 5 months ago.
Are the video drivers bad already? Geesh!!
I updated my video drivers (with your help) and updated my DirectX as
well...AND THE GAME STILL CRASHES TO THE DESKTOP. 8( Crap. What the
hell could be crashing this thing? It's driving me nuts.
Anyone else out there that can help?
Oh whoah is me.

Kevin posted this, and it may be worth a try:
From: "Kevin Goodsell" <good...@bridgernet.com>
Sounds like you are crashing at the moment it should play the intro video.
Did you install the Intel video codec? Try this: Open the file called
cam.cfg and add the line "skip_intro" (without the quotes) at the end of the
file. Save and close the file, then try running the game. My guess is that
this will get you to the menu, but not much farther. As soon as you try to
play the game it will try to show another video and crash again. But at
least you'll know what the problem is.
If you still don't get to the menu, then the problem must be elsewhere. You
didn't mention your DirectX version. Thief 2 requires version 7, and of
course you need DX 7 compatible video card drivers (the new ones you got
should be DX 7 compatible, but it can't hurt to check).
You also should try and uninstall and CLEAN reinatall - In other words, boot
your PC, do CTRL+ALT+DEL and END TASK on EVERYTHINg except "systray" and
"explorer", then to the install. This is especially true if you are running
Norton.
You can also try reinstalling Windows. I had some luck with that too.
good luck!

Thanks Kevin, and hope it was OK for me to quote you. I should have ended your
part better. The below was my idea, in case it fries your PC :-)

Hope some of this helped.
Also, I would try disabling hardware sound acceleration is you are using it.
I think I've heard of these "delayed crashes" (after several minutes of
play) being caused by sound hardware. The thing I said that is quoted below
probably doesn't apply to you if you are experiencing delayed crashes, which
means you probably watched the videos without any problems. Some people have
a problem with playing the videos. That's what I was referring to.

Is there any fix or driver update for my sound card? I have a Turtle
Beach Montego II A3D 320V Sound Card.
Does anyone else have a solution. ...(big tears in eyes)...Please?
My Thief version says. Version 1,0,0,0
And when I try to use the patch I get an error message that says.
"Cannot patch this version of game
This patch expects version 1.14 to be the installed version.
The version currently installed is 1.33"
I don't get it. How can the game be version 1,0,0,0 and the patch can
only fix version 1.14?
How can I upgrade my version? So I can patch it?
Eric
Thanks for the input.
Any other advice on my situation?

I just got the patch to install correctly and the damn thing still
crashes to the desktop. Is the cathedral buggy for anyone else?
In the first cathedral and the return to the cathedral is where I have
the crashes.
I think i'm going to have to skip over both of those missions. Man that
sucks.
Anyone else have any other ideas on what to do, or have I run out of
options?
I'm a little wary about getting Thief 2 if it has the same problems. I
can't even get throught to Eidos for tech help. 8(
Thanks to everyone who reponded to my cry for help. 8)
Eric
First I was running dual monitors via Windows 98. Unfortunately Windows
doesn't support OpenGL in dual monitor mode. So.... out came monitor number
two.
Next I had to reinstall the game, after a total delete. This reinstalled
the Codec drivers and all
Next I went to Microsoft and downloaded the most recent version of DirectX.
I know a lot of this is redundant, however with my experience I couldn't
help but mention that dual monitors won't play the game. If you are running
dual monitor support, you'll need to remove one to play the game. That's
remove the card and all. Sometimes the obvious stuff is where we fail to
look.
Again, this is offered only if you have dual monitors.
My game runs fine now. But you really need the most recent versions of the
game components.
I believe I have the patch laying around too if you need it. It's for the
most ancient of the Theif versions. I got this game the day it came out on
the shelves.
Good luck.

Now, don't laugh, but since you've tried everything else but
haven't mentioned trying this, have a go...
I have had this problem three or four times over the last year

error message. The solution in my case?........
I cleaned the CD and the game sprang back to life. Hope it gees

No, if you reinstall windows, you won't lose any files - Ummmm...Well, it's
unlikely! ALWAYS backup anything that's Mission Critical. Many of us Geek types often
reinstall Windows every few months just cause it's so buggy.
I WOULD NOT go to Win 2000, since that is actually an NT environment and EVERYTHING
you have done becomes useless, as well as programs (or games) you have now may not
work.
To reinstall, simply find that special BOOT DISK that you made when you first got
your PC, and pop it in the floppy drive, then place your Windows 98 CD in the CD rom.
Then Reboot (Start/Shutdown/Restart is fine)
When it asks you (and it will) select Option 2 to BOOT the PC with CD-ROM Support.
When you get to A: type in: d:\setup
and the Windows setup will run. If you get an error, try the next drive letter
(e:\setup)
Follow the screen instructions, and 45 min later you are good to go.
Thanks anyways.
I hear Thief Gold is good. How is Thief 2???

Many different outcomes cool movies etc.
