Initially, I thought this was a sick joke, but it's true according to
CNN. I'm stunned.

Stunned? No, I've been waiting for something for years. While it's not nice
he's dead, it comes as no surprise that an animal finally got him. He's had
so many close calls his luck had to run out eventually! Any real Aussie can
tell you NOT to act the way he did around deadly animals!

I'm stunned it was a sting ray and that it wasn't a joke.

I'd babble a lot about how it was a likely death and how it was how he
wanted to go etc, but I thought maybe a croc or something a bit more
usually deadly like snake venom or a portuguese man o war or something.

The ironic thing is that he was making a documentary about dangerous marine
creatures.

Condolences all around, but....

...THIS is why Marlin Perkins had Jim Fowler do all his gruntwork for
him.

Stingrays are definitely no laughing matter... they usually sting when
stepped on or by accident, or as a reflex if you grab and hold onto
them. Steve had maximum bad luck. He was messing around with a breed
that are very poisonous. One of them stung him through the heart,
according to MSNBC :-(

Sadly that he would see a early demise comes as no surprise. RIP Steve
Irwin... and condolances to his wife and young son...

His daughter, Bindi, was with him for the documentary he was shooting
there.
Luckily she wasn't around when the accident happened.
I feel very sorry for his wife, daughter and son :-(

Guess it proved a point. Not a nice thing to happen, both for him & his
family.

Still, there's no way I'd go irritating a stingray (or any of the hundred of
other deadly animals he's pissed off over the years - would you go
irritating a red-bellied black snake?)

Bob was with his mother, Bindi however was with her dad.
They said so yestreday, the people from the crew who where with Steve
when he died.
If this isnt true, sorry, but then its not my fault, this it what was
said yesterday.

IMO, it isn't really important where his daughter was, is it? Still got to
suck for her dad to die, no matter where she was at the time. And news
companies make screwups all the time. From what I've read here, either way
at least one is wrong. Hell, newspapers have been taken in by hoaxes for
decades. Made life-altering mistakes for victims of un-checked,
un-researched stories. They're human too after all (sucks for the people in
mistaken identity cases though). Not worth fighting over

True ... just trying to clear a little dust... Most disturbing thing to me
out of this was seeing footage of how Bindi was being groomed to be a
"little" Crocodile Hunter. From her perspective there may be something
positive in all this apart from inheriting a $40,000,000 zoo.

With most people I have seen who try to do this to their kids it usually
backfires and they go off at 18 and become a dress designers or whatever.
She may still have the chance to develop her own life.
Soorry to sound so bitchy I was distressed by his death but even more so at
seeing footage of the way she was/is treated....and the media was as much to
blame as anyone.

Isn't it standard diving lesson number 1 - don't swim, stand or otherwise
get above a stingray as they take it as a threatening move?

Just because it was a freaky one that got him doesn't preclude the nature of
the man. He was the worst advertisement for Australia I have ever seen and
just because his goal (the protection of nature) sounded wonderful does not
mitigate the facts. He was a danger to himself and others. Known to not
think his actions through before beginning to put them in action. Known to
behave in inappropriate ways around wild and/or dangerous animals. He was an
accident waiting to happen.

I didn't like the man before he died and I won't pretend to now. His family
has a hole in it, physically and emotionally, at his loss. I feel for them.
I would never want to be in their positions.

I think so. Basically, the rule of thumb in my eyes is "don't bug them!" if
they're venomous/poisonous. Works for me! Though redbacks or snakes in the
*house* should be dealt with (snakes by a snake catcher - they're paid for
the risk & know what they're doing plus they usually think Steve was a twit
the way he treated snakes)

Still mourning him...He was a very bold, daring, caring, and passionate man,
maybe a little off the deep end. But seriously folks, most of the men we
have been admiring for ages were also a bit "round the corner" so to speak.
I thought he was totally nuts when I first viewed his show, but then, after
being drawn in like a moth to a light, I've learned so much from the bloke.
Since I feel the way I do about his death, I can't imagine what his family
and friends are going through. May Steve Irwin rest in peace, and may his
family and friends also find peace in their hearts, knowing that what he has
brought into this world can change things for the animals and us, forever.
