You must be talking about Will Wright and his new toy "Spore"?? I don't know
if there was an actual thread about this. Seems like I did mention it in one
thread but that's been a few weeks back.

Thanks Betty!

Hrm, though the server is seeing the posts, it's now only downloading
the headers. Grr, need more money to get a better ISP. :(

Forgot to add, already using OE, but the news server with my ISP is becoming
VERY unreliable. Missing posts for days on end, not transmitting my posts,
things like that. Not the fault of the news reader. The server is just
responding with "Sorry, nothing new here" when my reader asks for new posts.

And then some! SimEarth was nowhere near this detailed. At least, not the
times I've attempted to play it. Google Spore & sit down for a good read,
you'll enjoy it. And if the downloads are as small as they're saying, even
better for us dialup users. A whole species in just a few kilobytes? Awesome
indeed!

Well, Spore sounds very interesting! Thanks for the info.
I wasn't aware that the ISP controlled the downloading of
news messages in OE. That sucks! I'm with Earthlink, and
every once in a while I get no new messages for a day or
two, but I just thought no one was posting. Then, when they
all came in 'back-dated' I thought the whole internet was
just busy! LOL!

That's just around the corner! I'm wondering what kind of
price tag it's going to carry. For all it can do you'd think
it would be very expensive, but the article stressed the
fact that not a lot of creators or designers were needed to
get it built, so maybe it won't be too astronomical. Sure
sounds like something I'd want!

I just did a search for updated info on the release date and found these two
more modern dates

http://www.xspore.com/release_date.html Originally slated for a Fall '06
release date, when Spore will in fact be release is debatable. There has
been strong evidence recently that Spore will not be released until 2007
such as the EA 'financial' statement and GameSpot's newly listed release
date. If the new Spore release date information is true, we may not see
Spore on store shelves until March '07.

Well, now you know - it's your ISP's news server. Though they're all
interconnected. It's possible the fault with mine lies with whoever thy
buy their newsfeeds from but with the "not-sending-posts" error, I'm
now much more inclined to think it's the actual server my ISP uses. The
whole idea is that when you post, your own local server keeps it on
record and sends a copy out to every server it can contact. They also
do the same thing on a regular basis, making sure that each server has
a copy of all posts. Well, as I said that is the *IDEA* of it. In
practise it obviously doesn't always happen. For any number of reasons.
The biggest killer for newsservers is if they have binaries - huge
space users. If the owner of the server is cheap and hardly has any
space, then posts can get dropped too fast for the next server in the
chain to catch it. And if you sat down & thought about it I'm sure
you'll come up with more reasons for the system to fail locally

I had read about it a while back, and it did sound interesting. But is it
an online game? The article I read mentioned something about online. If it
is that would be too bad. I don't like online games! I have dial-up and
can't afford to switch to broadband.

Well, there is an online part that's purely optional. I think they
called it a massively single player game or something like that. If
you're online, it'll grab creature files that others have made to
even-out the world. If not, it'll do whatever it can I guess. BUT. The
files for the creatures are said to be in the order of a few kilobytes
- something our humble dialup accounts won't notice :) That's a huge
drawcard for me. So yes it's online IF you want it to be, but not
essential. It just means the lifeforms others have created will appear
in your game.

It depends on how good your newsserver is.

Your ISP's server may not carry all the groups, it may have lousy retention and
completeness. My ISP's newsserver is completeley useless as it never has more than a
few posts in any given group, following a discussion is impossible, so I decided to
pay for a good one. I chose Giganews which is the best there is but it's not cheap.
However, you can get a good NSP for as little as $2.95 a month. That may be cheaper
or better than getting another ISP.

Cross fingers this works - trying nntp.aioe.org

"Strider" <xx...@xxx.xx> wrote in message

news:gcirk21r4t60l0jdi...@4ax.com...

As I said, many reasons for the whole thing to fail. Cost cutting is the
biggest issue and lack of storage space is what generally leads to reduced
retention time. The server just sees it's low on space & deletes the older
posts, using settings to bias it towards whichever sort of group the owner
wants. If they want binaries to get wiped first, non-binaries stay around
longer & vice-versa. Plus I guess they can set up any number of filters to
keeps the posts they really want around longer on their server & wipe the
others faster. But most of that boils down to a server with reduced storage
capacity. An ideal server gets more space all the time, but we all know
budgets don't always allow this, even for corporations. Free servers tend to
limit to non-binaries for that same reason (IMO) - lower budget == less
space. Save space by keeping non-binary groups which should (in theory) be
smaller.

Keep in mind this is just my personal understanding of the system from what
I've read over the years & not an indepth explaination!

Another thing that could mess with your server is a bad feed - the server it
gets its posts from could be at fault, or the one before, etc. At one stage
a LOT of people on different ISPs in Australia were complaining about
missing posts by the hundreds - all because a lot of smaller ISPs were
getting their feed from a certain pigopoly company that had decided to save
money and unplug a heap of their storage units & sell them off. No, not
naming names - laws over here let you get sued for telling the truth about
companies being bad if it damaged their "good name". So, if they stuff you
around & cost you a fortune or do something illegal & you post it, look out!

One other thing that's making me look towards a new ISP is the weird faults
that have been coming up lately. Taking 2-3 tries before their system lets
you log in, being connected but nothing my computer sends being answered.
Disconnections after an hour or two (supposed to be 4 hours). Damn I miss
broadband
