New info (there could be a few translational errors here as my German is
somewhat rusty):
From TheSims.de:
1. There is NO weather.
2. As well as cars, sims can now use bicycles to get around.
3. It may be possible for you to interact with your sim when they're at work
(no mention of chance cards though)
4. All clothing and objects can be customised and shared with other players.
(This probably relates to simple things like changing textures and colours
rather than allowing modders to create new objects and clothes though)
5. A hospital, art museum and a cinema are located in the neighbourhood. No
info on what they do though.
Sims2Fans.de is keen to emphasise that the game is still very much in
development and that the current screenshots taken may not reflect the final
product.
Simworld.de has a few pictures too and a curious article that needs proper
translation (Google mangles it, and I can't really make much out myself).
From what I can tell, it is possible for sims to gather outside the Town
Hall to voice their disapproval over the mayor's policies. This sounds
alarmingly like SCS to me and not very Sims-like at all.
From what I can gather, there is no info on things like ageing, SecuROM or
system specs, but looking at the screenshots, it looks like your average PC
certainly wouldn't have trouble running it. When the neighbourhood is zoomed
out, the graphics are very low-poly with lo-res textures.
Paul.
I agree!

I'll third that. The scenery (nature, that is) is beautiful, but
everything else looks... crap. Doesn't look like fun, and yeah it
looks like a town simulator.
Maybe EA's new corporate motto should be: We has seen the enemy, and it
is us!"
I think you might have started a new thread for that, y'know. Water looks
great though.

It reminded me of the original Sims. With a bit of town simulator thrown
in.

It looks EXTREMELY console-friendly. The problem with consoles is
always the lack of keyboard and a good resolution monitor. The
interface seems very small and looks tailored to TV.
Hopefully I'm just being paranoid :)
I can understand that the pictures are photographs of either a TV or
computer screen so they are over-exposed and out of focus. Yes, the scenery
looks nice. But despite the fact that the skintone shade slider makes me all
tingly inside, the way they are promoting this game is really failing to
impress me. I think they should slow it down for now. All the teenie boppers
are suitably impressed and wetting their pants. They're all "I can't wait
for TS3!" Slow down the promos, get the game towards its final stages, then
start releasing stuff that will impress the rest of the target audience as
well.
Cheers!

I am looking at the photos on thesims.de site. Ugh. It looks like it
will be an unholy cross between the Sims and SCS. I still say those
sims are creepy looking. Just creepy! And look at the elder female!
What happened to her boobs?!? A skintone slider? How many skintones
will this game have anyway?
None of this looks the slightest bit attractive to me. None of it.
When I first saw the promotional photos for Sims 2, I was thrilled and
couldn't wait till it came out to start playing it. I have absolutely
none of that excitement for Sims 3.

Now that is weird. I hadn't spotted that.

Is it? Well for me it's been attached to an old thread with the same title.

Pick a colour, any colour. It's on a colour wheel. I wonder how the
genetics will work if you choose blue and purple, say.

No - I've not liked the look of the models since they started releasing
them. It's not as big a change as between Sims 1 and 2 and doesn't seem to
offer as much over Sims 2 as Sims 2 did over Sims 1. Many players never
went back to Sims 1 once they'd played Sims 2 (I didn't) but I'm not sure
that's going to be the same this time. A lot of older (wiser) players I
think will wait till it's been out a while so it's 1. cheaper, 2. the bugs
are worked out, 3. hack fixes and noCDs are available, 4. more interesting
than just the base game to play - or may even not convert at all. Between
the Securom issue and the changes which don't sound as though they will give
me the game I want, I'm not too bothered just at the moment myself.

Frankly, after the Mass Effect and Sims 2 Securom fiasco, I probably won't
be buying ANYTHING from EA again. They treat us like dirt. Pirates get
better treatment than we do. Sims 3 looks sickly and probably will only
allow you to install it 3 times. They should come off their high horse and
treat us like customers instead of criminals.
I think it's a short adult...actually, he looks sort of like those
Smurfs I made a while back!
Nope - definitely a new thread. I've heard of this happening before with
some newsreaders if the subject header is exactly the same as another
thread, which is why on another newsgroup I'm on, where we have weekly
gaming posts, we add the date to the header to prevent this from happening.
Paul.

The original post in this thread was 11 March according to my reader.
Perhaps your date idea is a good one, especially with thread titles that are
likely to be the same as others.

I had that happen when I did a Ping: X post a while back. Instead of
starting a new thread, it attached itself to an old thread. I think that
adding a date or some other way of differentiating the post to ones with
repeating subjects is a good idea.
The impression I'm getting from these previews is that the game is far from
finished. Whereas with the Sims 2 with six months to launch, there was a lot
of solid information about what the game was going to feature as well as a
few play-throughs, there seems to be very little here. I wouldn't be
surprised if the release date is put back another six months to be honest.
There are a few elements in the game that appeals to me (immersive
neighbourhood, better customisability of sims) but these are outweighed by
the negatives - neighbourhood-wide ageing (and still no answer on whether
this can be switched off or not); seemingly inferior graphics, albeit with
better lighting and shadowing; animations lifted right out of Sims 2;
seemingly little control over entire families - yes it's nice that you can
have more of an input in what an individual sim does in a day, but this is
pointless if the rest of the household does their own thing regardless. And
finally - no weather. Truly a retrograde step when other games can manage a
bit of rain with no problems.
With only six months to go, and very little information to go on, it seems
that when the game finally emerges, it's going to be another SCS - broken,
incomplete (requiring many patches) and seemingly, for a Sims game, very
little for the player to actually do. It's starting to resemble the console
games, and from someone who has both Sims 2 and Bustin' Out on PS2, this is
a very, very bad thing.
Paul.
Sadly, it's beginning to sound like a console game too. I'm still curious
why EA still haven't given us any real information during their E3 and
Leipzig conventions. With only six months to go, I can't shake off the
feeling that the game is still in its very early stages of development.
Paul.
Six months?? I saw somewhere....April. Who really knows...
>Six months?? I saw somewhere....April. Who really knows...
February 20th US, 19th Europe, *12th* for Australia.

I don't like it at all. Maxis would have ported Sims 2 straight to
consoles if they could, but the interface and gameplay wasn't suited
to it. Thus the "Stories" and "Mysims" etc. with simplified gameplay
and interface.
Same thing we're seing in Sims 3... I HOPE I'm just being paranoid and
that it's a PC-tailored release. If they launch Sims 3 shortly after
for 360 and PS3 we'll know that they screwed the game up and started
from scratch with the new gameplay system because of greed and
marketing synergy.
February 10th according to the Sims 2 launcher!

You're right...just goes to show how much interest I've had in looking at
the news about it. LOL
I can't remember now where I saw that April date, I think it was at one of
the game shops.

Mine still says 20th.
