I've seen a number of paintings, tapestries and other wall hanging things
that apparently vanish from the back. Can someone explain to me how this is
accomplished and if I can alter older objects to make them do the same? I
love tapestries and paintings, but they are VERY inconvenient sometimes.

Well, paintings and such have two views - one from the front, and one
from the back (some have 4 views, like the sims does, but most just
have 2 and The sims just mirrors them).

Ones without backs, simply have invisible backs. You can do it with
Transmogrifier...

The procedure with T-mog is as follows, for anyone who wants to do it.

Open T-Mog
Highlight the object that needs to have the back removed
Click on "Export Object File". This will get you the export menu.
Turn "Just Change Colors" to off.(unchecked)
Click on "One Zoom, All Channels"
Click on OK. This will create a directory with your object's name, and an
XML file with the same name.

Now, open the "back" BMPs in a graphics editor. (there will be one sprite
group for single-tile paintings, and two sprite groups for two-tile
paintings. ALL of the "back" BMPs need to be changed.)

Change the A-sprites to all black
Change the Z-sprites to all white
Change the P-sprites to all yellow

Be sure to save your changed sprites as follows: A and Z sprites need to be
8-bit gray scale the P-sprite needs to be 256-color.

Now go back to T-mog
Highlight the object again
Click on "Import Object File". The import function will put the name of
your XML file up.
Click on "Open"

Your Painting is now invisible from the back.
