Are you talking about the UMS maps?
You can make your own UMS maps - but if a UMS is supposed to be allied
against you then it wouldn't make much sense with the storyline.
If you are just talking about a standard map - them making a FFA game is
very simple

I'm talking about the maps that came with the game. For example, if you
select Single Player, and then Play Custom. You are then given a list of
maps to choose from. On any map you choose the Game Type options are Melee
or "Use map settings". There's no "Free for all" option. In any game you
start as Melee all computer opponents ally against you. Kind of makes the
Hunters map (8 players) just about impossible to survive.

What version of the game are you playing? I am sure I have done what
you describe before, but I don't have Starcraft with me at the moment.
You might try starting a multiplayer game with several computer
opponents and no other human players; ``free for all'' should be on that
list.
You should start in multiplayer mode and add computer opponenents. Then you
should be able to pick the Free for All option.
Ah! That works! Of course, the cheat codes aren't available then so I have
to play fair. ;-)
Gave this a try. It allowed me to select Free For All but they still allied
against me and wiped me out in short order. Is there any way to set up a
game where the computer AI can't form alliances so that the forces won't
gang up on me?
I did this and they still all allied against me. Is there any way to set up
a game against several computer opponents where they can't form alliances?
They are not forming alliances against you - you just need to practice more.
You keep making the game easier and easier for yourself and you will never
improve.

You think they are allying against you because you don't see when they
attack each other.
The truth is, you just need to practice your skills and improve.

They launch joint attacks side by side. Their units attack mine in concert.
The don't attack each other. Sounds an awful lot like alliances to me...
So you are saying that enemy units will walk across a field right next to
each other and not attack each other?
Sometimes they will.
Save a replay of the game and watch it to see if they really do attack
each other.
By the way, I have Brood War version 1.13f and I can pick free for all
from the single player custom game setup. Maybe you need to update?
I'm just using StarCraft 1.0
OMG
Yes - if you are not running the latest patch FFA didn't used to work
correctly
(And I will feel like a complete ass)

Go update. I think you will find the updates nice. you can now built
scarabs and interceptors while having multiple units selected. There are
some other nicenesses added as well.

I don't even remember what it was like to play with version 1.0 :(
I am getting old like Chas already

Don't worry about it,... we know that already :p

Invincible drone bug!!!
If they're still not attacking each other you're hallucinating.
Like the game actually being balanced, perhaps?
1.00 is such a zerg-fest it isn't funny.
- patch 1.11
- Fixed a bug related to a Drone flying when surrounded by other
units.
- Fixed a bug involving a drone getting confused when receiving a
second build order while in transit to complete the first one.
- patch 1.10
- Fixed a bug where a drone could skate across terrain to an arbitrary
destination after failing to build an extractor.
- patch 1.08
- Fixed "gliding SCV" and "teleporting drone" bugs
- patch 1.04
- Invincible Drone bug has been fixed.
It looks like odd old version of starcraft when FFA was really buggy...
I think it was a hastily made, but poor, design decision. Whoever was
coding it never intended for the computers to fight each other - just for no
humans to be allied.

Yep. I was using 1.0. I got the patch to the latest version and now it is
working as one might expect. And Free for all is now an option in the
single player custom game settings.
Yeah. As soon as I posted that I slapped my forehead, downloaded the latest
patch and all is well. Free for all is now an option in the single player
games. And it's behaving much more as one would expect.
Imagine how I feel after posting I was using 1.0. Doh! I've got the latest
patch now and all is good.
Done. Thanks!
