A team of programmers that are not affiliated with Blizzard Entertainment
are developing an expansion to Starcraft: Brood War. It picks up where
Brood Wars left off. It involves 3 new campaigns, 6 new units, New
cinematicsm, multiple new hereos, spells, and much more. It is on its way
to completion but progress has been haulted due to technical difficulties.
When I contacted Blizzard to recieve permission to make this expansion after
we had already started I was turned down. Even though we are not planning
to sell this expansion we were turned down. Now, I am wondering if there is
anyone out there that would be against such an expansion. I would like to
convince Blizzard into letting us continue our project and release this
expansion to the public. We are planning on setting up a Battle Net just
for Target Earth and only Target Earth. If anyone has any objections to
this expansion please say so. Also, if you are supportive of this movement
please e-mail me at target...@hotmail.com . Thank you very much.

A few points:

1) Your expansion sounds neat.

2) Blizzard seems to have the ability to prevent people from
distributing hacks for Starcraft, i.e., they've caused several
hack-distribution sites to get kicked from their host ISPs. Your
expansion is not a hack, but Blizzard may view it the same way and
take steps against you. Whether they really have the power to keep
you from doing this I can't say.

3) Blizzard makes a good bit of money from advertising on battle.net.
If your expansion and its alternative game server become popular,
Blizzard would likely lose advertising revenue as a result, as
people use your service rather than battle.net. Blizzard isn't
likely to be happy about that.

4) The characters and story used in Brood War are copyrighted by
Blizzard. Use of them would probably constitute copyright
infringement, for which they could sue you.

5) I can see that you could use StarDraft to create new units, but I
can't for the life of me figure out how you could create new spells
without writing your own game more or less from scratch.

Good luck, but I think the odds are stacked against you.

i'd think if ... well, a "crack" application, which insert a function on a
specific unit (just a UI Catch exception in DX), then, show a sprite......
it..s...RAD's whats' it..?

just change the name. continuing a story hasn't get in the copyright law in
the states, right?

Blizzard can not stop you. As long as you don't make any money off it, and
don't say it is an "official" expansion, they cant do a thing. I have seen
allot of expansions like that. go to www.simple.craft.com to see some.

You can release it on the internet but if you sell it in stores then they can
sue you for copyright infringement. You have to do like insurrection did and
get their official permission. All the stuff is copyrighted(Heroes, units,
name, etc.)

Get their permission...even though it'd be hard. They'll probably take some of
your profits if you make it.

You don't have to ask for permission if you don't sell it or make any money
off it. I would be like any other map you make.

Copyright issues need not involve money. Someone can sue you just as
much if you release anything that infringes their copyright as if
you'd sell it or distribute it in any other form. See the FAQ on
'myths about copyright'.
