I agree. I'm a Mac user, but this has still happened to me several times
and it is incredibly annoying. I have to force-quit, and that always
takes some time to do. Please Blizzard, do something!

Well, if you really don't like it stop paying for it. Oh yeah, its free.
Face it, B.net is coming out of their own pocket; they have no obligation to
make a perfect multiplayer network. Personally, I hope that their network
code is improved in the upcoming patches and sequels, but theirs no point in
complaining about something for nothing.

To all:
The green-yellow-red indicators that you see while in battle.net chat
channels are derived from ping times, which aren't affected by the speed of
your connection (well, not appreciably affected, anyway). The question that
you should be asking yourself is, 'Do I keep lagging out of the games?'
After all, do you care more about what color you've got, or how well the
game runs? I am currently connecting to the Internet via my own proxy
server over a 56K modem (50,600bps connection, every time) so that my whole
home network has access. Because of the proxy server, I am always 6r in
chat rooms, but when I get into the games I'm 1g at the worst (before it
starts) and never lag out of a game in progress.
Ping time is a measure of how long it takes a packet to travel from you to a
certain address (or vice-versa, or both ways, depending on implementation),
including all the stops, twists and turns it has to make in between. The
speed of your connection won't affect that, most of the delay is in passing
packets from one communications line to another (like inside a router, hub
or server or something). Most proxy servers usually don't pass pings around
very fast. Ping time is basically a measure of how far away you are. You
can use it to gauge network congestion only if you have enough data about
'normal' ping delays.
We all keep seeing people in here, and elsewhere, complain about the
performance of battle.net. I don't know how many users Blizzard designed
battle.net to be able to support simultaneously, but any network or network
based service is going to bog down if you start getting more users than you
can handle (duh, I know). I make my living as a computer/network/security
expert, and I know that even the fastest, best designed systems are going to
crawl if you don't have the resources to handle all the people trying to use
it. Not that I'm saying that Blizzard hasn't got sufficient capacity for
everyone. I simply don't know either way. I don't work for them.
I'd like to know what the hell you are talking about when you say you have a
30 something DSL connection. Also, there is no such thing as a 25MB
(megabyte) ADSL connection. With ADSL the max speed is either 1.544Mbps
(megabits, notice the small-b) upstream and downstream (also called
symmetrical) or 1Mbps upstream (from you to the world) and either 7- or
8Mbps downstream (from the world to you). I think what you meant was that
the ADSL connection is 256Kbps (256,000 bits per second, of course) both
ways, which is the most common minimum speed for an ADSL installation. If
you really have a 25MB DSL connection, then you are using something that
hasn't been invented yet. The fastest connection currently under
development is VHDSL at approx. 31Mbps, about 7 time slower than what you're
claiming. Just trying to clear up some of the confusion over DSL.
I've heard several people complain about the Mindspring b.net server, but I
don't know anything to argue either way. Sorry I can't help there.
I would like to see a cancel button when I'm between telling it to join a
game and I actually get in. I did have to use the 'ye-olde-reset-switch'
method once many months ago. Wasn't happy about that.
Anyone else see this: when I'm waiting for battle.net to connect, if I
click cancel I go back to the multi-player game type selection screen, but
if I press the ESC key, it closes SC/BW altogether.
Happy hunting!

Lag is messurment of how long it takes for a signal to travell to
another computer and back, that has generally nothing to do with how
much bandwidth you have. Thus a 28.8 modem woud get more or less the
same ping time as whatever t3 line or whatever you happens to be
connected too.
A normal modem game is more than capable of sending and recieving all
needed data in SC. What can be true though, is that the ISP could have
heavier load on their server that handles modem connection than one
that has cable connection or if one sits directly on the net, that can
cause extra lag, but as always, the ISP and the net it self is the
main cause of lag.

Bnet is *FREE*
I connect daily, rarely have a single problem with it. Of course, I
have a kick ass $20.00/month ISP (you get what you pay for), a nice
PII machine, and a reliable phone line.
Try heat, or Gamezone if you're so CHEAP to not wanna pay 20 lousy
bucks for a LIFETIME of playing on Kali.
One benefit of Kali, the people you'll play there are generally more
mature, have much better attitudes, and are looking for no frills 1v1
games, no BGH channels, no 7v1 comp stomp crap, the competition is
generally better.
