So, I'm about to play Startcraft, for the first time, sort of. I have
played it before but didn't get very far into the game.

I also have the Brood War expansion. Should I install this straight away?
Does it make any changes to the original game, bad or good?

Yes, you could. You could choose which version to play
even after installing Brood War. BTW, go multi-player
once so that the games would be updated to the latest
edition.

Note that updating to the latest version might
increase the level of difficulty (because of changed
game balance). So don't be shy to go back to the
original version. :)

Whoa, a SC virgin!

I just started playing through the single player campaign again in
preparation for SC2. I installed SC, played through it, and then BW,
which I'm currently working my way through.

The campaigns are still very playable - just take it for it is. I don't
think reverting versions should be a solution for slightly harder time
passing :) If they made a level impossible or near impossible they
could correct it via patch as well.

Yes - install both - and then patch to the latest version. Assuming you
have the HD space, I suggest copying the two CD's to your HDD so that
you play without the CD inserted. You will need the info off both of
them to play the campaigns.

If I'm not mistaken you should copy it to your HDD first and then only run
the installation from the HDD location. I've not tested this, but since Luc
mention it, it must be true? Luc is god's messenger on earth.

Now it is possible with the latest patch 1.15.2 I believe the CD is no
longer needed to play. I know it has been possible before with help from
"cracks" but now it is official and LEGAL.

The information off the CD's is required to play the campaigns. But
instructions were given in a blizzard patch how to copy this information
to your hard drive so that you don't need to have the CD inserted or
actively emulate it

I missed this one. Thanks. But the no-CD image is working fine... :)
