What different game typed are you talking about? Is it the setting? The
new maps?

The types are :

Melee
Free for all
Use map settings (this one, I understand ;-) )
One on one (this one too)
Top versus bottom
Greed
Slaughter
Capture the flag
Team Melee
Team Free for all

and I think that's all.

for these two last, I don't understand why the 'team' option is
specified. Isn't it sufficient to check the "ally" boxes while in game ?

Whoa. Those last two are OLD ones. They've been there since
beginning/near beginning, AFAIK.

They function like Melee and FFA do normally. But up to four players can
play each 'team', which means all four (or whatever) players control one
set of peons and town hall. All players have full control of all units
on their 'team'. They can also choose different races so you can start
as Terran with a SCV and a Command Center, but one teammate may be
Protoss (giving a probe) and another Zerg (giving a drone) and a third
teammate being Terran and giving another SCV. I have heard that if you
have two Terran players, you then get 400 total Terran supply, along
with the 200 Protoss supply and 200 zerg supply. Not sure on that one
though.

Ok, so I was shredding some zerglings in alt.games.starcraft on Wed,
10 Jul 2002 18:29:45 -0400, when "KlesKz"
<klesk...@nospamminhotmail.com>, started attacking me out of
nowhere. After I got a detector and saw he was a DT, he said "Re: Game

The "team" games are games in which multiple players control the same
"team" of units. It's like a melee with 2 or more people controlling
each set of units.

Here's a complete list of the game types and what each one does:

Starcraft v1.09b Multiplayer Game Types
---------------------------------------
"Standard start" below indicates each player starts with one Command Center /
Nexus / Hatchery, 4 workers, and 50 minerals.

1. Top vs Bottom - Players located in the top half of the player slots in the
ready room will battle the ones located at the bottom half. This template
functions like Melee, with the exception that players in each half are
automatically allied and share vision at game start, thus removing the "who
am I allied with" question (and reducing the amount of clicking done after
the game starts). The game creator can move players around between the two
sides as needed to assign teams properly. Alliance changes within the game
itself won't be possible. Note that Top vs Bottom only works for games with
two sides - if you want to play 2x2x2 games, you will still need to use
Melee.

2. Melee - Standard starting forces and resources, alliances allowed.

3. Free For All - Standard start, alliances and shared vision are disabled.

4. One on One - Free For All for two players only.

5. Ladder - Standard start. Alliances and shared vision are disabled, "Fastest"
game speed may not be used, only official ladder maps are allowed, game
results are automatically reported.

6. Use Map Settings - Uses the map's preset starting forces, resources, and
enables any map-specific Triggers and Objectives.

7. Capture the Flag - Standard start. Each player controls a flag that appears
after a few minutes. The flag location (beacon) can be moved once at the
beginning of the game. Flags can only be carried by workers (SCVs, Drones,
Probes). Bringing an enemy flag to another player's flag beacon instantly
kills the flag owner.

8. Greed - Standard start. The first player to accumulate the specified amount
of resources (Minerals and Gas) wins the game.

9. Slaughter - Standard start. The player with the most kills when time runs
out wins.

10. Sudden Death - Standard start. The loss of ANY "town hall" (Command Center,
Nexus, Hatchery) is instant defeat. Expand carefully!

11. Team Melee - Same as Melee, but with Team play (shared units) enabled.

12. Team Free For All - Same as FFA, but with Team play (shared units) enabled.

13. Team Capture the Flag - Same as CTF, but with Team play (shared units)
enabled.

Team is an interesting type of game that requires a little more explanation.
Basically there are between two and four players on each "team". Players can
choose to be whatever race they desire in the ready room. Once the game starts,
the team will start with whatever race the first player in the team chose. For
example, on a team with two people, the guy on top chooses to play Zerg while
his teammate selects Protoss. When the game starts, there will be a hatchery
and four peons - two Zerg drones and two Protoss probes.

All players on the same team can command all the units - so you can give units
completely contradictory commands. Whatever command the unit received last is
what it will do. If your teammate is using a unit it will have a green dotted
circle around it, so don't mess with it.

Something interesting about this mode of play is that *each* person on the team
gets 200 food points. So if you have two Terrans on one team, they each get 200
food points - which means the team can have up to 400 food points. This is
cumulative, so for a four player team, the team would have 800 food points
total, divided up between the races played. That is, a team of a Terran, a
Zerg, and two Protoss would get 200 points for the Terrans, 200 points for the
Zerg, and 400 points for the Protoss.

Note that in the above team, if one of the Protoss players gets an Arbiter, the
Arbiter's cloaking field will also cloak the Terran and Zerg units. Have you
ever seen a fleet of cloaked Battlecruisers and Guardians? It's rather neat.
