I never used the Sega DC joystick, but I have an ASCII stick (it's the
SNK-style version, which as I understand is cosmetic changes only).
Personally, I don't really like it. The control feels a little lose, and
you have to be fairly exact with the diagonals (I often think I'm
crouch-blocking when I'm simply crouching). Plus, the vibration feature is
worthless...for those of you who care about vibration anyway. So in all,
it's a good stick, but not great.

Just my two cents.

Hi everyone,

I just want to get peoples' impressions about the ASCII Fight Stick when
compared to Sega's Dreamcast Joystick (the grey one with the green buttons).
Anyone notice any difference between the two? I've played on the Sega stick
but seeing as it's in short demand I thought I might pick up the ASCII one
if it's similar enough.

Any help would be greatly appreciate.

Peace,
Will

I guess by ASCII Fighting Sticks you mean ASCII FT special Capcom vs. SNK
joysticks. I have used both Agetec and ASCII FT and I highly recommand
ASCII FT, I think it's much better then Agetec...much more smooth, less
noisy...

I noticed the same thing with the ASCII FT Pad. I have one of the original
gray ones (not one of the Capcom vs. SNK editions, although I imagine
they're the same). Often I've noticed during practice or a friendly DC
tourney that it registers my intended crouch-block as just a couch. It
grates most on me when I'm playing as Chun in 3rd Strike and I try to dash
in and immediately do her df + HK (or Tenshin Shuu Kyaku as you put it in
your FAQ :) ). Half the time I end up flailing a crouching roundhouse
before the opponent has woken up and I'm caught waiting to eat a combo or a
fat super. The crouching problem is very noticeable on the pad. I'm
wondering if it's just as bad on the joystick.

Rolling the Sega stick 360', the movement of the whole joystick feels very
'square' - which makes pulling off
fireballs and dragon punches a little difficult. The buttons have a cheap
and rattly feel to them too and mine are beginning to stick just a little
after about four months play or so.

I've got one Ascii FT SNK and one FT Capcom stick and was able to pull of
continual shoryukens. The joystick has a great feel to it and rolling the
joystick around, there are eight distinct points. The joystick, as mentioned
by someone else, is a bit loose.

Can't say about the Ascii FT stick, but out of the Alloy Arcade stick, the
Agetech stick, and the Massystem sticks that I own, the agetech is the one
I use for combo videos...

Heheh, good to know someone out there actually uses the official names :)

The pad's problem is entirely due to the little rubber square that's
underneath the actual control pad (you have to open the controller to get
at it, obviously). It wears out in no time flat. I was able to replace
mine with an old sega genesis rubber thingy that I trimmed off to get a
proper fit, but now I have spotty forward presses (walking forward when you
want to dash is too annoying to put into words)!

I should probably get one of those PSX to DC converters so I could use a
PSX pad, but I have no idea who makes 'em or where to get one.

I know that there's a PSX to DC adapter made by EMS Productions called Total
Control. A friend of mine uses it all the time and it works fine. The only
thing is that occassionally the DC pauses automatically and registers that
there is no controller present, then suddenly the pause screen will appear
and all you have to do is hit start for it to work again. There was a
rumour going around that it was made for Japanese DCs and this is why that
happens, but since that time the adapter has been tested on four Dreamcasts
for extended periods of time and has worked fine. It only glitches on that
one DC so I'm thinking it has to do with a port problem or something.

Here's the website for the company. They make a lot of other products as
well.
http://www.hkems.com/m_main.htm

I live in Toronto and have noticed that most import stores carry them for
about $40 CDN or about $27 US. I've also noticed that Buyrite
(www.buyrite1.com) has them as well although I don't know if they carry the
EMS ones.

Hope that helps,
Will

The best converter in my experience is the Dream Connection 3-in-1, which
I believe is made by Level 6. I ordered mine from Tronix
(www.tronixweb.com), and received it quickly. The fit is kind of tight
(i.e., you don't want to go plugging and unplugging controllers over and
over), but it works like a dream. Apart from the Interact Arcade Stick,
it's the only way I know of to play SNK fighters with the proper 4
buttons-in-a-row configuration. I just use my old PSX Ascii Arcade stick
with the DC 3-in-1, but it also supports PSX pads, PSX steering wheels,
Saturn pads/joysticks, Saturn steering wheels, and PC PS/2 keyboards. Not
bad for under $30. It also provides excellent rumble for PSX Dual-Shock
style pads.

It's a peripheral I highly recommend. I've personally tried my Saturn
Virtua Stick, a stock PSX controller, my ASCII arcade stick, my 2nd gen
Saturn pad, and my NiGHTS pad. All (except the NiGHTS pad, which only
functions as a steering wheel) work wonderfully. In fact, I didn't even
notice any lag -- parries are easy to do even on high turbo speeds in
Double Impact, for example.

I also sometimes use it as a keyboard adapter -- I rarely surf using my
DC, but when I do, the 3-in-1 is a godsend. =)

It's a quality, versitile product at an amazingly low price.

Best,
