"Get lost, you can't compare with my powers."
It depends on the super. For Gambit's royal flush, he throws 37 (or maybe it
was 38) cards every time, but for the Chun-li super where she kicks forward you
can almost double the amount of hit's by mashing. I find most of the time
mashing to be not needed, it just makes people feel like the super is more
effective.
OOB
Morrigan's Soul Eraser does pathetic damage if you don't mash, but
Shadow Lady's Big Bang Laser will always take off the same amount.
Another super that benefits from mashing is, of course, Megaman/Roll's
Beat Plane. Other than that, for the most part, mashing only gets you
a little bit more hits and damage.

My rule on this is that unless mashing/ringing the joystick causes
an actual VISIBLE effect(verifiable extra hits, turning different
colors, whatever), then it's just useless banging on the buttons. The
most obvious one, Senretsu Kyaku, is 15 hits without mashing, and up
to 30 with. The Kikoshou mashes too, but only gets 3-4 more hits.
Spinning the joystick with the Final Atomic Buster makes Zangief turn
red, but mashing doesn't add anything.
That being said, mashing a Maximum Spider, Crawler Assault,
Berzerker Barrage X, Weapon X, Royal Flush, or Shichisei Senkuu Kyaku
is a waste of energy. All of these do a fixed amount of hits and a
certain amount of damage no matter what you do after it connects.

Most of the supers do improve when you mash the buttons, and I believe you take
less damage if you mash while you're getting hit by one. Capcom is pretty fucking
stupid... every game of MVC (for instance) involves each player power-mashing for
a few seconds, two or three times at least. Then all the buttons on the game get
broken. Whee.

And the interesting thing is that particular masher is in all the
games with the Shinryuken, even the non-Vs ones...too bad they more or
less got rid of the suction effect in MvC.
Then again, some people just like to mash anything, even a
Shin-Shoryuken that *WHIFFS*. (yes, saw this today, more than once...)
Hmmm....maybe that's because it works, if it happens to even tap the opponent?
You see, if you don't initially connect the Shin-Shoryuken and get the 4-hit
big damage auto-combo, it turns into a juggle move of sorts. Once I was Ryu,
and my opponent was Wolverine. I had only a sliver of energy left, he had about
one-third of his. Well, he decided to use a well timed Fatal Claw right after I
did a whiffed crouching roundhouse. I decided to try something stupid to save
my life....so I did a Shin-Shoryuken. Ryu became invincible, flew up with the
uppercut, and tagged Wolvie in midair, out of the Fatal Claw. I immediately
began mashing the buttons, and amazingly the move which I thought for certain
would whiff turned into a massive 9 hit juggle combo that just barely KILLED
Wolverine! It was pretty damned amazing.
So....don't criticise, because anything is possible.
Not criticizing, but that's normal for Shin-Shoryuken if you don't
get the close-up version...besides, I was talking about a COMPLETE
whiff. As in, touches nothing but air and the guy was mashing on the
buttons like he's got a Mega Optic Blast going...
And it's not QUITE invincible, either...one time I flew over a Ryu's
head with a Shichisei, whiffed on purpose, and he tries to
Shin-Shoryuken me as I pass over him. Well, I turn around on a dime,
and do a Shichisei in the OTHER direction, which takes him completely
out of his super...
To my recollection, it's completely invincible during start up. Once he's
off the ground though, he's fair game.

Try Shin-Shoryukenning Strider out of an Oroburos and then tell me if you still
think so. Hits you clean out of the opening frames(like, my fist was in his
gut ready to deliver the second hit and a stupid little satellite whacked me
upside the head).

I think the only supers (in MVC) that mashing increases the damage are-
Chun's Senretsu (1000 Burst)
Ryu's super FB
Jin's Blodia Vulcan
In addition, Zangief's FABs will do more damage if you spin the
joystick.
Some supers (such as Rush Drill, Beat Plane, Ouroboros) will do
different actions when you push certain buttons, but that isn't exactly
mashing to increase damage as much as it is specific output controlled
by buttons.

Have you ever seen the damage on Morrigan's Soul Eraser if you don't
mash? Ick.
