Best game of all time? What catergory? I learned along time ago
that no matter how cool you think a game is someone else thinks
it sucks.

Categories(note it is horribly misspelled)
Best fighting game: SFA (god I love that game *sniff*)
Neatest Fighting game: VF2
Awesome Graphix: KI
Funnest: Ranma 1/2 Hard Battle
Wierdest: Clayfighters
Most original: Street fighter II, ok so what it's old it did basically start the genre
Longest series: Streetfighter II
Most repititions in a series: TIE SFII-SSFII (SSFIIT added the powerup bar), and MK II-III

Hypothetically you could stay in one genre of a game forever, but them's the breaks,

IF there is a god please release Ranma 1/2 Super Battle here in the states.

Ok I'm done

WHAT do you think is _the_ best game of all time? I'd have to say KILLER
INSTINCT(arcade). DKC(snes) and goonies 2(nes). What are your favorites? Please
reply! :)

I'd hardly consider those games the greatest of all time. ESPECIALLY
KI which ranks extremely low on my chart. My faves are Discs of TRON, TRON,
Spy Hunter, and Star Wars (The 1983 Atari Games coin-op, NOT the SEGA arcade
game)

Yes, I have to say Goonies 2 was THE BEST GAME of all time. The
BEST...no other game compared. I would play it for hours. In fact, I
never quite beat it, not even with the cheating guides. It may have been
low on graphics and music, but it was THE BEST.

DAAAAAYYYTOOOONAAAA for arcade, Daytona for Saturn(what can i say? i love
driving games), Landstalker/Beyond Oasis for Genesis, FFIII/Secret of
Mana/Mario Kart for SNES(3-way tie). And the best game of all time for me?
Daytona for Saturn. Why do i like saturn version better? More cars and
options than the arcade keep me coming back. If all i could play was
arcade mode w/ the same 2 cars over and over, i'd be bored in about a
week or 2. (Horse is cool too).

I can name about 25 different arcade games that deserve "Best Game" honors
more than that cheese called Killer Instinct. Here are a few (in no
particular order):

1) Super SF2 Turbo
2) X-Men:CotA
3) Shinobi
4) Daytona USA
5) Revolution X
6) Crackdown
7) Virtua Fighter 2
8) Martial Champion (just kidding)

If I had to pick one, I'd choose Virtua Fighter 2. In my opinion, VF2
_trounces_ KI in it's own backyard.

I will agree with DKC, however. I'm still amazed at how the game looks,
sounds, and plays, especially on a "lowly" 16-bit platform. Yes, I know,
the concept of the animation is just frame-flipping, but if such a simple
concept can produce such an artwork on a less-powerful machine, I want
more! (like Zelda IV?)

Really? Or aren't I spotting the sarcasm here? If you're serious, I'd
quite seriously consider agreeing with you (actually, I thought I was
the only one in the world who bought the game :) ). I too played that
thing for hours on end. Where did you get stuck? I've played the whole
thing thru several times (once I did it in **one sitting** - now that's
someone with too much time on their hands :) ), so maybe I can help you...

Yep, in my oppinion, VF2 is one of the best genre games around, with SFA and
SSF2T coming in close. Daytona is my favorite sim, while I think that D+D game
whose name I forgot is one of the best walk around and fight games. That's all
I have to say for now, as I'm sure someone will jog my memory for more good
ones that have escapped me.

I can name also 25 different games that beat ANY of the games listed below
except for the VF2 and Daytona USA.

: 1) Super SF2 Turbo

Oh yeah. :) The same old s**t in the new package with the words "Super" and
"Turbo" added. I wouldn't be surprised if you also liked the Super Hyper
Ultra Street Fighter 4 Turbo Excellence too. Of course, the only difference
it has to the rest of the series is that you can actually fight with a M-1
Abrams main battle tank and throw opponents out of two windows instead of one.
Plus it has one new character.

: 2) X-Men:CotA

Well, I think I should give this a little more time to prove its worth. For
now Killer Instinct eats also this thing as one mouthful.

: 3) Shinobi

If this is the ancient ninja-bulls**t I'd say I'd rather play C-64 Karate
Devils because you don't have to spend any quarters on that one.

: 4) Daytona USA

Well, this is cool, or rather, this was cool. Neat presentation and authentic
feel but still it suffered a severe inflation in two-three weeks. The 1995
Rally Championship is just another Daytona USA with different graphics
so that's it for Sega's driving games...

: 5) Revolution X

Aerosmith? CD throwing rifle? Music is the weapon? Get a life.

: 6) Crackdown

Oops, one unknown game for me there too. What is this one like?

: 7) Virtua Fighter 2

This is absolutely brilliant. The styles the characters present are just
awesome and very well presented. The slow tempo of the fighting makes it just
up to the real fighting where you are looking for mistakes from the opponent.
I love this.

: 8) Martial Champion (just kidding)

Hehehe :) even THIS beats the SSF2T or Rev-X.

: If I had to pick one, I'd choose Virtua Fighter 2. In my opinion, VF2

: _trounces_ KI in it's own backyard.

Comparing VF2 and KI is just like comparing oranges and apples. Technically
they don't even fall in the same cathegory. VF2 is an attempt to create a
street-credible fighting simulator, where KI is just an excellent presenta-
tion of merciless bashing, mauling, maiming and destroying with NO intents
to be realistic. All KI has to do is to incorporate excellent sounds and
excellent graphics and that is something KI damn well does.

Just for the record, I try to list my Ten Absolutely Favourite Coin-Ops All
Time (in no particular order):

1) Tempest (the absolute #1 though)
2) R-Type
3) Killer Instinct
4) Star Wars (the 1983 Atari thing with a cabin)
5) Virtua Fighter 2
6) Point Blank (excellent shooting fun)
7) Operation Wolf (that shreds Rev-X to pieces)
8) Virtua Racing (actually the beginning of it all)
9) Hyper Olympic (hehe!)
10) Stargate (the follower of the Defender)

Oh no. Please don't do this. For some reaosn people have started making
comparisons between MK3 and VF2 in the mk newsgroup, please don't let that

Putting these ephemeral games up against chess is no contest whatsoever.
Chess rules. Go is a close second fighting hard. These games are entering
their second _millennia_, dude. Ten years from now no one will ever remem-

Goonies was the best!! The weapons the music the gameplay!! And I actually beat
it!! When I first saw it I wanted it so badly that when my big bros. friend
came over with it I took it and hid it hoping that he would forget it. Nope he
didn't. They knew I took it. I searched and searched and like no stores in the
USA had it!! But after like a year or something I found 1 copy in a toy store.
YYYYAAAAAAAYYYYYY!!!!! I played it for hours and hours and hours!!! But I soon
stopped playing and sold it along with my other games for NES. Finally a little
while ago, I decided I wanted it back. I saw it in a rental store used for
$5.95. I finally decided to buy it. I went there and it was gone!!!! Here we go
again.......

Samurai Shodown is to Killer Instinct and Street Fighter, what Chess is
to Checkers. I can't believe so many overlooked the superb attention to
detail in the artwork, the incredible ability of the sound and music to
convey a real 'mood' for the game, the fantastic character design, and
such innovative and responsive gameplay. Streetfighter is still a great
playable game though and extremeley responsive, but lacks the complexity
and depth of SS2. Killer Instinct on the otherhand has got to be the
Klunkiest feeling game ever. I feel like i'm controlling globs of clay
with that game. No one will deny the SGI artists did a great job with all
graphics, and the sounds are great too, but the game-play itself is so
pathetic that it ruins everything. Even if it had good gameplay, SS2
still beats them all in style. Bottom Line, SS2 is a video game design as
a pure artform in all aspects.

#1- Samurai Shodown II

#2- Speedball II (Amiga)

#3- Puyo Puyo (known as 'Dr. Robotniks Meanbean machine' in U.S.)

#4- T-Mek

#5- Rally Speedway (1983 for the C64)

Well to throw my answer in this highly subjective trip down memory lane...

Toe Jam and Earl (the original) for the Gennie is the most amazingly fun
video game I have come across. It's funny, original and very hard to
find. If you can get your hands on it it comes highly recommended.

It's a real shame Sonic took off and got all the marketing money this far
superior game shoulda had. The sequel, Panic on Funkotron is pretty neat
too.

Sorry to tell you this, but I found Goonies 2 to be EXTREMELY easy with
the Players Guide. What could have possibly hung you up with this game?

Heck, I could beat it without continuing!!!

: such innovative and responsive gameplay. Streetfighter is still a great
: playable game though and extremeley responsive, but lacks the complexity
: and depth of SS2. Killer Instinct on the otherhand has got to be the
: Klunkiest feeling game ever. I feel like i'm controlling globs of clay
: with that game. No one will deny the SGI artists did a great job with all
: graphics, and the sounds are great too, but the game-play itself is so
: pathetic that it ruins everything. Even if it had good gameplay, SS2
: still beats them all in style. Bottom Line, SS2 is a video game design as
: a pure artform in all aspects.

I agree the Samurai Shodown series is overlooked and
underappreciated. It has the best artwork (VF2 and KI are visually
impressive, but not "artwork"), the most interesting and charismatic
character designs, beautiful backgrounds, and NOBODY does music better
than SNK... you can let your characters play to some of the rhythms, and
it becomes like a dance... and it's mostly very tasteful, traditional
style music (the american characters get good rock music), or sometimes
they'll use complete silence, and let the creaks of the bamboo stalks be
the music. Other attentive details include the "camera" zooming in on
closeup fights, the background characters reacting to the fights, and all
the nuances they added when fighting without your weapon (like Nakoruru's
call to her hawk), which happens so infrequently that it's surprising
they paid attention to it. Finally, they put the most effort into the
ending sequences, which consist of action and moving characters, not just
a couple big still drawings and some text. One small complaint:
Charlotte should speak french, not just english with a french accent.
I disagree that it has the most complex gameplay. In fact, i think
the gameplay is the main reason it doesn't unseat SF2 as the most popular
series. The main problem is the well-known character imbalances, but the
hit detection is lousy too, and slows the game action down. The
animation when characters get enraged, while well-done, looks silly when
you're poking them through the middle with a sword to no effect. Also
the damage rates are really screwed up... Haohmaru can stun with one hit,
do his 7-hit shadow move, then do it again to tick off whatever energy,
if any, you have left. SS only feels like chess because it plays slower,
which I don't mind, but not because it's more complex than SF2.

: #1- Samurai Shodown II

SS for one player games (ahead of KI), VF2 for two player (ahead of SF2)

: #2- Speedball II (Amiga)

Had one of the Speedball's for my PC... most enjoyable game which
could be played over and over. Rpg's leave my harddisk when they're
finished.

: #3- Puyo Puyo (known as 'Dr. Robotniks Meanbean machine' in U.S.)

Isn't there an anime called Puyo Puyo?

: #4- T-Mek

You're one of those people who prefers the feel and mood to gameplay,
like me. T-Mek looked cool with great sounds and theme, but the chaotic
nature which made it exciting also restricted the amount of strategy
involved. It has a real short entertainment lifespan.

: #5- Rally Speedway (1983 for the C64)

Never had the priviledge.

I do! I do! It *was* pretty cool, but I prefered Konami's early

Does anyone rember *Armalyte* on the C64. It was a shoot-em-up, R-type'ish
type game but the graphics were just incredible. The weapon systems were
just excellent, you had three choices of super weapon as well as your
standard fire and you could collect generators and batterries to give them
more power, amazing. The sound was perfect. One and two player games
simultaniously. It was just so absorbing. Each level was so busy and it all
ways seemed to be different each time you played it with the dull drone of
the loading music as you counted the numbers down as it loaded in the next
level, your heart beating, the sweat on your hand, "press fire to continue".
Definatly ranks as one of fav's. It was done by Thalamus who used to
produce some amazing games for the C64.

Simon.

because we don't have to brag for the game it speaks for itself. By the

I _love_ Golden Axe... I once beat it without ever losing a point of
health. The only problem I had with it is that I never figured out how
to get a high score. Since each time you beat it without dying you
killed the same number of creatures and got the same amount of
treasure, you'd think you'd always get the same score. Not so... I
never figured out whether higher scores came from which moves you used,
how fast you won, or how little you got hit...

I couldn't help but notice that someone would bring up that, of all
games. I still have it myself (using a C64 emulator), and I must admit, its
not that bad.. but the BEST Shoot 'Em Up? I'd have to say that title belongs

Crackdown was a great game. You had to bust up a heap of crimelord lair type
places. Great feel (you could flatten yourself against a wall as the bullets
whizzed past, and trick the guards into shooting each other etc). A pity I

Another underrated game--Cool Spot. Not the most original game, but it
was a platformer with character. I love to tell people at work that its
the ONLY really great game that was a blatant ad. Although I hear that
there's a good game that basically advertises McDonalds. Anyone know
about that one?

I had the good fortune to visit Eurocomm this spring and got a peek at
Virgin's Spot Goes To Hollywood as it was in production. It looks
fantastic--the 32X version looks best of all. There's a level (or was at
the time) where Spot was piloting an X-shaped space fighter down a
metallic canyon on a large moon-shaped space station. DHGF showed some
screen shots but neglected that one. Anyway, Spot GTH should be great.

I also remember liking Jumpman for the C64.

There's several along that line, most by Virgin (you mentioned cool Spot).
The only one out of those that I've ever heard praised was the NES version
(I forget its name). Much in the style of the Mario games. Virgin did a
sequel called Global Gladiators on Genesis, which I haven't played.
There's also Treasure Land Adventures on Genesis which just looks stupid.

I second the motion on Cool Spot (not in my Top 10 but a cool game) and
add SNES Jungle Book and Genesis Aladdin (also Virgin games).

If you love Discs and other classics, check out rec games collecting for
the posts on the Videotopia museum exhibit, they've got everything, and I
mean everything in mint condition, and lots of cool informational kiosks
and stuff like original design drawings for classics, etc. Call your
local science museum and request it, I think the museum people are
resistant to haveing videogames presented in a positive, serious manner.
kev

(the exhibit's Discs is a mint condition Environmental cabinet.)

I couldn't disagree with you more.
Asteroids, especially a game like Warlords require intelligence and
reactivity as well as strategic planning.
People will be playing tetris for generations
the best games are the true classics
Asteroids
Space Invaders
Sinistar
Discs of Tron
Warlords
Tempest
Defender
Breakout
Tank II
etc.

I definately agree with you on this one, just went playing KI at the
local arcades here in Amsterdam, and when I got home and played
SS1 on my Neo it felled so much better :-) just more responsive,
involving, faster...

> #2- Speedball II (Amiga)

This one REALLY was great too, much better then it's predecessor and
surely better then any soccer game.

Here's my -ALL TIME- list :

1) Contra IV (Super Probotectors) - SNES/Action
This game is IMHO so great I'm very suprised it's not on anyone
else's list. Music is breathtaking, style of graphics and BG like
nothing else, but best of all, it has the best variation in an
action game I've ever seen !

2) It came from the desert - Amiga/Adventure
Very involving theme, fantasy brought so seriously it almost felt
real. Many side-threads and time depended events.

3) Alien Syndrome - C64/Action

4) Last Ninja I/II- C64/Adventure-Action
I played this one for hours, hours and hours :-)

5) Armour Geddon - Amiga&PC/Future Flightsim
Real missions,many different vehicles,strategy elements
,null-modem play,and no dirty textures !

6) Fatal Fury I - Neo Geo/one-on-one beat 'm up
sorry for this one, just nostalgic, there were ofcourse
much better fighters.(still -great- music though)

7) S.W.I.V. - SNES/vertical shooters
great music, breathtaking atmosphere in level 2
very nice graphics, and at least four different
vehicles which all play very different.

8) Shadow Dancer - MegaDrive/horizontal beat 'm up
very nice gfx, and I just like this type of game.
Shadow Dancer - Amiga/horizontal beat 'm up
great music and totally different levels as the
megadrive version. (why these two games had the
same name is beyond me)

9) Dune 1 - Amiga/Adventurisch with strategy elements
great music, great theme

10) Dune 2 - PC/strategy

11) Ik- Ari Warriors (Ikari) -C64/vertical shoot 'm up

12) Operation Starblade - Arcade/3d flightsim on trails

13) Doom II - PC/guess :-)

14) Kings Quest 6 -PC/Adventure

15) Space Quest serie
Larry serie
Police Quest 1 and 4
Quest for glory III

16) Mortal Combat II - Arcade/one-on-one beat 'm up

17) Lotus II - Amiga/racing

18) R-type III - SNES/horizontal shooter

Please note I only included the more older titles on the list because
this is supposed to be an all time list, isn't it ?
Ofcourse I like today's games like VF2,Daytona etc, but will I still
like them over a year or so ? Most people when asked for their 'all
time' favourite just name today's much hyped titles and when asked
next year they just name the titles which are then much hyped and
have completely forgotten their so called last year all time
favourites.
A real all time favourite IMHO is one that you still like even though
more modern, bigger , advanced etc titles are out.

How about Alien Breed on the Amiga (not two player mode), The secret of the
monkey island, or for shoot 'em ups SWIV or Xenon II.
I could play Monkey Island for 10 to 15 hrs straight and forget about food
and sleep. I was seriously hooked.
And what about the worst (that anyone knew about), Home Alone or maybe
Terminator 2 (Amiga version)

Speedball II for the Amiga!!! What a great game! The Bitmap Brothers
were the Gods (bad pun for Amigaheads - but that's another newsgroup,
sorry) of the Amiga! I think they should be doing the consoles more -
they obviously have their heads on straight!
