Note there are many other strategy guides available from many other
sources. (Please mail me if you have guides for distribution.)
3. Help! What are freezes, resets, handcuffs, invisibility, etc., and where
can I get a list of these trick moves?
ter...@hkov04.dec.com has compiled a list of the most well-known trick
moves. These moves are known to work only on specific classic
Streetfighter II machines.
a. Freeze -- causes a character to become frozen in place
b. Reset -- causes the machine to reset!
c. Handcuff -- causes your opponent to become frozen ("handcuffed")
to your character!
4. How many versions of Streetfighter II are currently out there, and which
version do I have?
a. Version 1 & 2: Guile's tricks work, Dhalsim's don't. Ryu/Ken
can destroy the Lexus with roundhouse only.
b. Version 3: Guile's and Dhalsim's tricks work. Cannot fight
a character versus him/herself.
c. Version 4: Dhalsim's tricks work, Guile's don't. Can fight a
character versus him/herself.
d. Championship Edition: Players may use the SF2 bosses (Balrog,
Vega, Sagat, Bison) and play any character vs. him/herself.
5. Hey, I heard these great rumors, are they true?
a. Secrets
1) Sheng Long (character) -- very, very old bullshit
2) Any secret, final character -- bullshit
3) Being able to play the final four characters on classic
SF II machines -- false, although possible on the
Championship Editions
4) Being able to play secret characters -- false
5) End game screens -- the below are true for SF2 Classic
a) If you finish the game on one quarter, without
challenges, you get to watch characters fight it out
as the credits roll by
b) If you hold a button down before the above begins,
the fights are in fast motion
c) If you finish the game on one quarter, without
challenges, and without losing a round, the end
screens display the designers of the game
6) Vega's claw falling off -- true, the claw can be broken,
even much easier on TCE
b. Moves -- in general, if the computer can do it, so can you; it's
usually a matter of timing and/or sheer speed
1) A character's crouched version of a known attack (examples:
Ryu/Ken's crouched dragon punch, Zangief's crouched
spinning pile driver) -- generally true, examples are true
2) Blanka's multiple flying ball attack -- true
3) Guile's standing razor kick -- true, but no reliable method
4) A character's secret super-move (examples: Chun Li's
bracelet, Guile's grenade) -- bullshit
5) A character's multiple missiles concurrently -- false
c. Bugs & Glitches
1) In classic SF2, a player vs. him/herself
(example: Ryu vs Ryu) -- true
2) Ryu/Ken's red fireball -- true, just a bug, there is
nothing different about the fireball other than color
3) Characters can disappear off the top of the barrels
during the flaming barrel stage
4) Ryu/Ken "freeze" during the flaming barrel stage --
jab DRP, jab DRP, walk in and fierce DRP; only Ryu
in TCE
5) Zangief may "walk on air" by doing the double-lariat
during the Lexus bonus stage
6) Vega can fall through the screen during the flaming
barrel stage -- destroy first barrel and backflip
7) Blanka can cause the screen to shake when played
against computer Vega -- immediately execute a jab
roll and shake the joystick/hit all the buttons
quickly (TCE)
d. Streetfighter III
1) It exists! -- bullshit; some people are confused and think
Fatal Fury is SF3
2) It's in production, and will be available soon! -- false,
don't expect to see it at least until 1993
6. What is "ticking?"
Originally, the term meant the strategy of using attacks which your
opponent blocked, so you could throw them while they were blocking.
The term has now also come to mean (incorrectly) any series of attacks
which are deemed "impossible" to defend against or get out of.
And no, ticking does not take much skill at all.
7. Which character is the best? How do characters compare against one
another?
This is how Capcom rates each character's potential versus the other
characters. Each number represents how many matches out of 10 the
character on the left would win against opponents on the top.
(This chart is pre-Championship Edition.)
Guile Dhalsim Chun Li Blanka Ken/Ryu Honda Zangief total
Guile - 5 6 7 6 8 8 40
Dhalsim 5 - 5 4 7 6 8 38
Chun Li 4 5 - 6 6 4 6 31
Blanka 3 6 4 - 6 4 6 29
Ryu/Ken 4 3 4 4 - 7 7 29
Honda 2 4 6 6 3 - 7 28
Zangief 2 2 4 4 3 3 - 18
Note that this table is arguable, and in any case, it is only a measure
of a character's *potential* against others. A character is only as
good as the player using him/her.
8. What's the deal with the final four character's names?
Due to legal reasons, the names of the last four computer opponents
were switched around in foreign releases of SF II.
1) USA -- M. Bison (boxer) in Japan, Balrog in foreign releases
2) Spain -- Balrog in Japan, Vega in foreign releases
3) Thailand -- Sagat (kickboxer), no change
4) Thailand -- Vega in Japan, M. Bison in foreign releases
9. What's the difference between Ryu and Ken?
Streetfighter II: Ken's DRP does slightly more damage, while Ryu is
slightly faster. Ryu's roundhouse kick throw has a longer reach and
faster speed than Ken's, while Ken's fierce shoulder throw has a longer
reach and faster speed than Ryu's.
Streetfighter II: TCE: Ken has much wider dragon punches, while Ryu can
execute fireballs quicker, and Ryu's throw priority has been increased.
Ken's hurricane kick catches opponents into the kick, while Ryu's
instantly knocks opponents down. Ryu's hurricane kick can also go
over Ken's hadouken.
10. How is "Ryu" pronounced?
"Ryu" is most closely pronounced like "roo."
[ I am *not* about to attempt to teach the typical Usenet user
Japanese. If you have beef or constructive criticism, MAIL me. ]
11. How can I separate SF II rumors from truths on the net?
Alt.games.sf2 and rec.games.video.arcade is awash with people full
of shit. If someone posts using the following phrases/words, you
can have your doubts:
a. "A friend of mine...", "A friend of a friend...",
"My brother's friend...", etc.
b. "credible", "reliable", etc. to describe the above
c. "I didn't see it myself, but...", "I wasn't there but...",
"I wasn't really paying attention, but...",
"Out of the corner of my eye...", etc.
d. "secret move", "secret screen", "secret character", etc.
e. "secret"
Generally, the less people reporting something *and* the less details
given, the greater the chance it's bullshit. Likewise, the more
people agreeing on something *and* giving specifics, the more credible.
But you should always question whatever you read, *especially* when
reading newsgroups.
12. I want to post about Streetfighter II to the net, is there any
etiquette that I should observe?
a. Please post to alt.games.sf2 (the devoted Streetfighter newsgroup)
if your site carries it in order to keep bandwidth down.
b. If you post to rec.games.video.arcade, please put "SF2" or
"Streetfighter II" or something thereof in your subject header.
As hard as it may be to believe, there really *are* people who
do not want to have anything to do with Streetfighter II. Please
respect that, so they can kill SF2 posts. (And likewise, SF2
fans could mark *only* SF2 posts.)
c. If you've heard a neat, unconfirmed trick, don't pass it off as
truth. Let everyone know that this *is* a rumor. Otherwise,
you'll find people quick to flame, and you probably deseverve
each and every flame that comes your way. ;-)
13. Damn, the SF II machine at my local arcade is broken or faulty! Should
I post to the entire world so everyone knows about this? Does anyone care?
No. At *least* post only with a local distribution. Better yet, find
something else to do with your time; get a life.
Please email any corrections, contributions, comments, and/or criticisms to
either of the address below. Flames will be snickered at, distributed for
laughs, and forwarded to your good friend and mine, /dev/null.

Actually, that isn't the only way; Chun Li can also do it by finishing off
an opponent (I've done it to 2 different ones, both computer) with the air
throw.

Now I have been told, and a computer mag called CVG has so
say confirmed the fact that if you double perfect the last four bosses it
is possible on your next credit to use one of the last four bosses.

Is this only on the certain version, or is there a cheat ?

How ?

At the start of a round do this, and then walk under
where the barrel was and fierce dragon. Does this
work with Ken and Ryu on classic ? How do you
get out of it ?
> 5) Zangief may "walk on air" by doing the double-lariat

What just stand there and do the lariat, and then walk
around ? jump ? keep doing the lariat ? How ?
Thanks in advance.
Scott
Yes.

Don't believe it.
>> 1) In classic SF2, a player vs. him/herself

Apparently only works on certain versions. It works on at least one of
our local machines, along with Guile's tricks and I suppose Dhalsims. (What
I don't understand is that it isn't a version 1 or 2, because Ken and Ryu
can destroy the car with any move.)
To play Ryu vs. Ryu, select any character on the Player 1 side (except Ryu)
and get up to Ryu. Lose to him and wait for the "you lose" countdown timer
to appear. When it does, punch in on the PLAYER TWO side and choose Ryu.
If you're in luck, you get Ryu vs. computer Ryu, both in white. It
deosn't always work - sometimes you get Ryu vs. Ken.

Yes, works on classic. You don't have to "get out of it", Ken / Ryu
only freezes for about a second. What happens is that they start the
DP, but only make it about an inch off the ground before getting
trapped-in by the barrels, so they hang for a second then land again.
(Guiler's: try razor kicking the barrels in the some position).

Presumably you stand on a barrel, do the Lariat, then walk off the barrel.
(This is in Championship, obviously...)
