why? It is a competition of wits and phyisical reaction... it may not
be pure strength, but surely near the level of table tennis as far as
physical requirements, and i consider TT to be a sport. If that was an
attempt to universially state that SF is not as enriching as your
supposed 'real' sports, you need a lot more than that.

SF itself may die off, but the actual gaming community will not, it's
been around for about as long as any other sport.
it can also be argued that sports are not as physically productive as
claimed, instead of maintaining a reasonable balance within the body,
the emphasis is on pushing bodies 'needlessly' to the limit in terms of
the respective aspect, speed, power, endurance, etc... only to suffer
the effects later in life. And what reason was this for, fame?,
women/men?, money? all things that IMO do not automatically make
something productive.
FINALLY, someone on the same level of devotion to video games as myself. I
swear, video games seem like the high point of the lives of some posters. At
first I came to the board to ask questions, but I was admediately ridiculed for
not knowing something someone else knew.
The worst is when they call people a scrub for something totally un-video game
related. Example:
"I don't like Charlie"
"You fucking scrub.. how can you not like Nash"
I thought video games were suppose to be fun. The other videogame newsgroups
are a lot less. what a good word... ANAL.. some people need to settle down.

Huh? How is SF different from a 'real sport'? And what does
popularity have to do with anything?
> Video games can hardly can be compared to this level.
Why not? It seems like there are a lot of comparisons; SF and
<insert pop-sport-du-jour here> both require a certain amount of physical
technique, 'strategy', and ability to read an opponent. How *aren't* SF
and 'real sports' comparable?
The difference between sports and games, obviously, is that the
players *are* the fans. But aside from SF's lack of a cheering crowd, how
is the game really, fundamentally different?

Huh? Sports, and the people who play them, have never, ever done me

Seriously, I'm curious (heh heh).
Agreed.

I am almost offended that people still think like this. It shows that the
evolution of human thought is comparable to that of continental drift. Plus,
your last sentance above makes absolutely no sense. Anyway, soccer and
Baseball are both GAMES, just like SF. Don't argue w/me, I'm probably one of
the biggest baseball fans here.

Productive for who? Except for a very few exceptions, they are a drain on
our economy, our resources, our society, and possibly our culture. The only
reason why they have so much backing is that it lets people escape the
meandering of their otherwise inconsequential, if not disappointing,
existence. It's not mind altering (at least in the medical sense), so it's a
good thing. Sports are around for the same reason the Circus Maximus was
around during the height of the Roman Empire, to entertain mass amounts of
people. Happy people are less destructive people. SF does the same thing,
but just on a lower scale. Besides, like other posters have said, it requires
skill, thought, and sharpens analytical and reasoning abilities.

i think everyone here is sort of missing the real point.
games and sports are not neccessarily the same thing. some games are sports and
some games are just games. a sport might be defined as an entertaining activity
which requires some amount of physical and/or manual dexterity.
that being the case, then both baseball ( or what ever sport ) and SF do fit
into that catagory.
now i personally don't think SF is a true sport, but i do think that it's a
combination of sports and games like chess. that's what the video game industry
is all about. almost all video games are thinking games which involve hand-eye
coordination and reflexes.
arguing about whether SF is a sport and whatnot is pointless. video games are
their own entity and they have their own classification.
as for the statement about why people takes SF so seriously... well, think
about it. SF is a game very similar to chess in that 2 players are moving and
countermoving in order to eliminate one another. chess has been around for ages
and there are chess tournaments all over the world every year.
so why do chess players take the game so seriously? for 1 reason. the same
reason why games and sports are so popular in the 1st place. because of the
competition. people who are very competitive take the game seriously. that's
where their pleasure and entertainment are derived from.
for those of you who can't understand that, there's just no way to explain it
any further. you either love the comp or you don't. BTW, almost all great pro
athletes are motivated by competition. that's what made them great.
SF and video games may not be around as long as some sports and games like
chess, but that's not the point here. the point is that they are all
fundamentally similar.

The only REAL difference between video games and sports are popularity. If we
talk about fighting games, which is what most of like the most, both are
competitive games which players use certain skills in order to beat the other
player(s). Both serve very little meaninful purpose. Sure you develops
physical attributes in sorts like longevity, strength, speed, etc. But you can
also say that the video games promote quick thinking, hand/eye coordination,
reflexes, etc etc. The only REAL difference is popularity. And as we all know
the populus is as a whole, stupid.

opps my fault!
Look at it right here.
A Sport= A Game
A video Game = A Game
You play a video game to have fun and to win.
You play a Sport [Which is a game] to have fun and to win.
But then there is people that are only good in video games and hate Sports.
Then there are the ones that are only good in sports [Example Basketball] and
suck in video games.
Of Course Sports [Example Basketball] are gonna get more viewers than Video
Games because sports get people hyper.
For example lets say you go to a basketball game and your into the game and
somebody dunks the ball. Your gonna get excited and all that. But if you are
watching a video game and somebody does a Sho-ryu-ken and wins what does that
do for you? Nothing! That is why people get paid to play Sports (Games), and
people pay to play video games.

It's a waste of time to even suggest it. It's been standard practise for
years (virtually since the NG began, from what I've been told).
> I like videogames too, but I don't take them so seriously that I need to insult the people who aren't very good at them.
Then don't read here. People here (as in people who have been here for
any extent of time) have no compunctions about belittling you if you
post trash, since if you post trash you DESERVE to get put down. Either
you deal with it or you go away; the choice is yours.

Explain "gimmick".

No one (in their right mind) calls people scrubs if they like playing
MvC. When people start spouting nonsense like "Vs. games rock with
skill", that's when the scrub labels start flying.

If someone doesn't know what they're talking about, or doesn't know how the game
plays too well, they're fall into a certain category of player. 'Scrub' is just a
term used by many to describe these people. I know, I'm a scrub myself.

This is probably because you don't care enough about the game and the gameplay to
discuss them at all. Scrub is not a derogatory term. It's just the level of skill
a particular person has.
> don't call people scrubs if they like playing
> the Marvel Comics Vs. games either. I think
> it's sad that you guys do these kinds of things.
But the thing is, since the Vs. games require such low amounts of skill, people
who think that the games are balanced and have good gameplay obviously have either
turned a blind eye to all the mistakes in the game, or just haven't NOTICED
them... in which case they are indeed scrubs.
> Yeah, that must be it.
I'm curious. Why did you post, anyway? Are you about to tell a bunch of Trekkies

wrestler (intentionally) in any way. Get over it.

Debatable. Personally I think Milo's got me on the ego bit, but he's
just more strongly opinionated than I am. If given enough time, I'll
probably be able to match his level of bitterness ^_^
Come to think of it, where did you get the idea that I had "the biggest

Why should I? This newsgroup and discussion about the games that it
entails are not at all concerned about "the real world". In any
SF-related forum, be it tournament, newsgroup, message board or
otherwise, if you are full of crap and don't know a damn thing about
gameplay, then you have every right to be called a scrub. What this has
to do with "the real world" is absolutely irrelevent. Are you going to
start using the JB Gainz Defense (see the Request For Comments thread,
or go look through Dejanews) now?
> >I don't think anybody gives a rat's ass what you think.

A dim bulb brightens.
> Maybe you're not really thinking or else why did you "give a rat's ass" to reply to my thoughts?
Boredom mainly. But also to let you know that your effort is futile
since, contrary to how most other places operate, this newsgroup has
traditionally been flame-prone (which goes along with the competitive
nature of the games we discuss), so suggesting that we behave otherwise
is a waste of time. Had you bothered to actually /read/ my post, you
would have realised this.
> >since if you post trash you DESERVE to get put down.
I should point out that when I said "you", I wasn't referring to you
specifically. I meant "posters who post trash". Whatever...
> Well then you DESERVED this reply based on your failure to generate a thought that made sense.
Tsk tsk. I didn't realise you were this stupid. Now I know what level of
stupidity I'm dealing with. It was very kind of you to get that out of
the way as quickly as you did. Well done.
Justification yes, though seldom is it "unprovoked". Oh wait, I forgot:
In your world, "provoked" means "correct me when I'm wrong". I guess
you're right (note for the mentally slow: This is sarcasm).
> I disagree. Unless someone attacks you personally, you are best to ignore them and move on.
If someone posts garbage, others can either let it slide, thereby
risking other people picking up on it as truth and thereby spreading
around more garbage, or they can nip it in the bud by correcting the
original garbage-spewer from the onset. That is because "provoked" on
this planet does not mean "correct me when I'm wrong".

I think that it is you that is taking this too seriously, Spydey. Insulting
each other is part of competition; believe it or not, some people can actually
connect better with each other if they bust each others' balls a bit.
Furthermore, one of the purposes of an ng, I think, is to let people be able
to communicate with people in ways that have not existed before. I have
every right to agrue with, say, Jay Longshore, and to tell him to kiss my
lily ass. Or, I can start talking about how all Vs. without Dan suck. This is
the freedom of being able to post on the internet. All players of Street
Fighter from all walks of life can communicate, and as such certain concepts
(such as that of the "scrub") are developed over time.
We get smart guys. We get dumb guys. We get guys like you. It's all part
of the mix. And sometimes there are parts of the mix that do not appeal to
you. So just ignore it, and do not take it too seriously. If you do not like
Howard Stern, then do not listen to him. If you do not like John Grisham,
then do not read it. And if you do not like alt.games.sf2, then start
alt.games.notsf2.
If you really do not like "hardcore" discussions about videogames, then go to
a newsgroup that has a topic that you are passionate about, like the people
who post here. I mean, just by posting here, I think that pretty much means
that your interest in a game is at least above average. That is why many
interesting subjects begin here.
The above post you sent is simply the standard "Hi, I'm feeling superior right
now, so it's time to goof on the geeks" speech I have seen many times. Hell,
in my earlier days (um, like 5 months ago ^^;) I went into The Role-Playing
Room at the-park.com and goofed on everyone. Everyone basically had the same
responses that people here have had to you.
Now, I'm not saying that you should be forced to censor yourself, I'm just
saying that you should avoid situations where you know that you are trying to
people riled up.
Is it ethically right to go into a Jewish neighborhood and start proclaiming
it is Hitler's birthday? It is not. Of course, this situation is by no means
equal to that situation. But it serves as an example.
So to sum up, do what you want, but consider what it is that you want to do.
