In the RE games, after using up a key you are asked if you'd like to save it
or discard it. If memory serves, in the original game saving the keys was
the way to get costume changes. But does it serve any purpose in RE2, or
will they just take up space in my items chest?

Actually, in the first game, after you finished the game, you were rewarded
with a "special" key to the closet. There is no purpose in either game to
saving the keys. Hope that helps.

The keys are taking up space, discard them once you get the chance. The
costume change can be done at anytime after using the special key to open the
closet. To get the special key for those uninformed: Playing in NORMAL mode,
make it to the police station without picking anything, ammo, guns, etc. A
zombie will be outside of the station, walk down some stairs, kill him and
take the key to the film developing room on the first floor. Caution: the
zombie takes many more rounds then a normal zombie, go get the grenade
launcher or shotgun before attacking.

There are two costumes - an army suit and a lame leather jacket with blue
jeans. The army suit lets you shoot faster with the handgun and you only
have to hold it with one hand.

The leather jacket suit lets you do that too. Claire gets a Colt SAA which
fires handgun bullets at a faster pace, but reloads every 6 bullets. She
changes into this horrible orange and blue suit.
