I know they couldn't call the game Biohazard in U.S. but who came up with the
title "Resident Evil" and why? It's a cool title but doesn't exactly describe
the game.

You know I'm curious as well. "Resident Evil" is actually a stupid name
that makes no logical sense really. It's just the series has been so bad
@$$ it's now respected.

Play the first game. It takes place in a mansion (a house). Or, by
other words, a residence. What do you face in it? Sheer, utter evil.
Hence, Resident Evil.

Er, it makes perfect sense. Refer to my other post in this thread.

What I can't figure out is why Biohazard, the game name in Japan makes
perfect sense, as the virus is indeed a 'biological hazard', While we are
stretching logic all over the place to explain 'Resident Evil'. I would
have released it to the USA Europe and other environs as 'Biohazard', end of
simplification.

And Dragon Quest sounds/works so much better than Dragon Warrior, but
like Biohazard, it had to be renamed for trademark reasons in the US
(DragonQuest is a trademark of TSR, and Biohazard is, well, a band). =(

I've heard before that the band is the reason they didn't use "Biohazard" in
the U.S., but I don't buy it.

It's more likely that it was the Arcade/Genesis game "Bio-Hazard Battle"
that was the reason they changed the name. Trademark law allows multiple
uses of the same title, but not if there is confusion. Hence "Genesis" the
band (much more famous than Biohazard) and "Genesis" the system. Confusion
with a little known band (Biohazard) was unlikely, but confusion with a
previous video game (Bio-Hazard Battle) was much more likely.

Yes it definately would have made sense, unfortunately I think some band was
making a stink about the name or something, although they could have spell
biohazard different such as Bio-Hazard which technically can be used, I
still don't see where the band would have had any complaints though
considering it's a game and not a band.

Of course alot of things don't make much sense anymore.

Have to agree =) And in the first game it made it more interesting
uncovering the story, whereas if I knew it was called Biohazard in
Japan I would have already known that it was because of scientists
screwing around with a virus.

I asked about this myself. Its called that because that division of Capcom
called themselves Capcom's Resident Evil, due to the fact that no one had ever
made a game like they were making. :)

I think part of the reason they chose "Resident Evil" as the title may be that
its a unique combination of words that protects it from copyright infringement.
Most of the logical, simple titles may already be owned.

As for whether or not it makes sense, consider that game titles have a tradition
of being nonsensical. Think about "Illbleed". "Devil May Cry" is one that is
irritatingly nonsensical.

Despite all that, "Resident Evil" as a title DOES make sense. Think about terms
like "resident physician" and "resident expert". "Resident Evil" would basically
mean "an evil residing within a particular place" (in this case the mansion.)

You know, that makes perfect sense. I still would have chose a cooler
name though ;-P

Based on the saying "The devil may care" if I remember correctly.

Hmmmmmmm... it just doesn't sound right though. The only reason is
"does," is because it's such a cool game it made the phrase work.

That was another copyright problem. The game was supposed to be titled "Devil May
Care" but because the use of the phrase is copyrighted, they had to rename the game.

I'm more interested in why the sequel is being called "Devil May Cry 2" instead of
"Devil Never Cry" after the end of the first game.

Yeah, I know that saying but why "Cry"?

Yeah, it cool by association. If they named it "Peanut Butter Sandwich" that name
would sound cool now too.
