If you are using a graphics card that uses a pass through you can use a multi monitor setup. When I had my voodoo card I
was able to display gamespy to scan for my buds on a private server while playing Quake at the same time.
I can no longer do this since going to the tnt card. To play I now have to turn off the other monitor. This is more of a
driver issue as I have been told and should be directed to the manufacture and not the software company.
But how many great action games are there on MAC ? I would like to play Q2
is it possible ?
I would like to put a TnT 2 based video card instead of an ATI one is it
possible ?
Is it easy to overclock a MAC ?
Is it easy to upgrade a MAC with a more powerfull processor without changing
the motherboard ?
I would like to buy a dual or quad G3 computer how much does it cost ?
Is MAC OS 8.7 finally a multitask premptive OS ?

Don't buy a Mac for 3D games... At least not yet. I have a iMac and a PC
here, and both have Quake3. I also had a multi monitor setup a while ago,
and I can answer your question quite clearly.
No, you won't see more of the game. You can, however, have a gamespy window
in one monitor, but you can only show up one monitor with games (and other
non-windowed progs). Actually, the Gamespy in a one window is just a dirty
trick, because once you start your game, you can't acces the other window,
and chances are it won't update (but I can't tell that for sure).
The only cool thing you can do with two monitors is have a mutliple display,
wich is simply showing the same thing on the other monitor.
BTW, you can do the multiple monitor trick with windows too, it's just they
took there sweet time to do it.

Are you sure?
I think it's more a question of having the right combination of cards. I
will have to admit that WHEN I tried my multiple monitor setup on my PC, I
had a combination of a All-in-Wonder pro AGP with a Creative Labs voodoo2
12mb on a loop cable for the main monitor, and the second monitor had a
simple ATI mach64 card. My computer froze within seconds of boot but never
at the same moment. The verdict was that wither my All-In-Wonder or my
Voodoo2 was screwed up because I did have many problems with them after a
overclocking incident. But the main thing was that it seemed to work a
little.
Still, multiple monitors on macs have much more support and settings you can
play with.
Now, I have a voodoo3 2000 AGP and my other cards are stashed away in my
"almost computer trash" box. I would be very curious to test multiple
monitors now but I don't have the space on my motherboard anymore. Maybe on
day during spring cleaning when I'll have to decide what I'll have to throw
away.

WRONG... I have 2 monitors on my desk right now using multi monitor
support with 1 voodoo3 and the other is justa 2meg ATI card, and I play
all openGl and voodoo games just fine... You will only get opengl
support on the primary montor, no games that i know of use the second..
But works great for graphic arts and web publishing..

That's what I though. And yes, it's wonderfull to work with two monitors
for anything that asks many windows opened at once (visual programming,
Photoshop, Quark Express, etc...). I think multiple monitors only work for
windowed applications.

As soon as games developers catch onto multi monitor support for consumers,
they'll start targeting it. Imagine how useful it would be in a flight-sim
to have your HUD on your main monitor and you control panels on your
secondary monitor.
Or am I just blabbing again, and you can't differentiate between monitors on
a programming level? Shame.
btw- I doubt there'll be too many games like Quake to use the second monitor
in the near future.

Nope, you're not just babbling. Matrox (with dual monitor support in one
card with the G400) is working with/encouraging developers to write support
into their games for multiple monitors. I read about one Realtime-strategy
game that would allow you to have a map showing the entire playfield on one
screen and a close up of a specific area of the map on the other.
I've been hearing about multi-monitor support for games for years now. It
must have been the early 90's when I saw a news report on someone setting up
a system with 3 monitors for a FPS, a center monitor for the main view and
an monitor on each side for peripheral vision. Not exacly a brilliant idea
(I'm sure as heck not going to be able to spend the extra cash to buy two
more monitors, even if I did I don't have the desk space) but certainly an
interesting one.
No, you are not blabbing. Remember, doom had an option to
display 180 degrees on three monitors . Btw, an excellent
multi-monitor programming library is the ggi project (
http://www.ggi-project.org ). Feature independent output devices
via a commmon interface. Also supports multi-monitor (even
multi-tiles of screen).
On the other side .. how many do have enough room for a
second monitor ? In my case, the monitor must have wings because
the table ends where the first monitor is placed ... (maybe
putting monitor above the other ? :)
kind regards,
Markus

This was a feature of Doom (or was it Doom II?). Though strictly
speaking it wasn't multi-monitor but multi-machine as you needed three
separate machines networked.

Actually, I'm glad you've proven me wrong. That multi map thing you were
talking about is perfect for multi monitor setups. Hopefully, we'll see more
games that support multi monitor (but not necessarily written for
multi-monitors)

3 monitors of a FPS? Possible, but really not worth it!
