Anyone remember the maxfps command in Quake 2? It was meant to help out with lag.
Instead of your internet connection trying to get enough info to render each frame
your video card could put out, you could select 30 fps, and your lag would reduce.

does seta com_maxfps "50" in Quake 3 Arena do the same thing, or does this command
in Quake 3 Arena do something else all together??? I am running a pentium 800, with
256 megs ram, and a ge-force ddr card. I can do more than 50 frames per second, but
perhaps with my internet connection, I'd be better setting this to 50? (internet
is Rogers@Home, and it's been a bit laggy lately...

Thanks!

Try seta com_maxfps "60" . If it's still bad, then try 50.

Hi,

The graphics engine is now divorced from the connection engine in Q3a.

Setting a max FPS will just cap your graphics and not effect the lag
problem. I would say that you should set your maxfps to 80 as that appears
to be the limit to help the DM13 megaheath jump.

The variables you are interested in are as follows.

rate
snaps
cl_packetdup
cl_maxpackets

These will change the characteristics of your connection. Set your
connection speed in quake and then exit and hand edit the config file to
make slight changes to the settings.

There is a great link for setting up the connection speed but I have lost it
at the mo. I'm sure someone else in the group has it though.

capping your fps will do nothing for lag in Quake 3.
Just cap it at your average consistent framerate(not
your timedemo results). Hopefully at least 60 or more..

I have to disagree with this set com_maxfps thing not effecting your net
game. At least with modem play. I can join a server and my fps will be 90 to
100+fps and my lagometer will be all yellow. Drop my com_fps down to 60 or
80 and it goes green. Dont know why but it makes a difference on my box.
Maybe you guys with cable and xsdl it doesn't.

I've just tried a server (XS4ALL CTF in NL) using modem and a 49333 connect,
using snaps 20, cl_maxpackets 30 and tried com_maxfps 100 and 50. I was on a
machine that can easily do 100 FPS (timedemo result of 145 in demo002).

I noticed no difference in the lagometer at all when I changed the
com_maxfps. I really don't know why you've a worse connection at higher FPS.
Is the modem you're using a WinModem/SoftModem or does it share an IRQ with
another device? That might at least help explain a higher FPS causing worse
connection for you in Quake3.

Not much help I know :[
