trilinear filtering increases the filtering quality on textures that are in
the "z" plane. In other words, stuff that is angled "away" from you will be
filtered with a higher quiality.
Remember, we're trying to do a 3d game in 2d. We make this happen in large
part, with texturing.
Now, as for the visual difference, it is VERY VERY minor in most cases. It
helps a bit in some situations. However, if you don't know what you're
looking for, you probably won't notice it one way or another.
