Am trying to install Quake 3.
Have a P4(1.5Gb)/256Mb/Matrox G200 (8Mb)/40Gb HDD running Win 98SE.
Tried to do a minimal install and everything seems fine until you try to
load Quake 3 and I get a white screen and a mouse arrow. Nothing else and
the PC is locked up.
Tried to do a full install. PC Locks up!!
Re-loaded DirectX (8.1) - DXDiag shows "no problem". PC Locks up!!
Used GLSet-up to re-install Matrox drivers. PC Locks up!!
(Have read somewhere that the G200 cannot be use din high res - but cannot
find a command-line switch to run Q3 at lower res).
Have tried all manner of desktop settings - running in 16bit, 24bit, 32bit,
800*600, 1024*768, 1152*864 - every combination and still the PC locks and
crashes with this white screen
Strange thing is - the same PC used to run the Quake 3 demo no problem...!
Anyone offer a clue as to how to sort this out.(Have tried searching "google
groups" and visited many Quake 3 websites, but none have shown a solution to
this problem.
Any help appreciated.

If you have punk buster enabled Q3 will try to communicate with the PB
master servers and it will appear to you that your system is frozen.
If you let it sit long enough it will eventually start to respond
again.
Thanks for the info.
Tried disabling AV program but to no avail.
Don't even get to the first menu screen.
Am sure it's down to the PC and not the game....!

Hi Malc
Thanks for the info.
Trouble is - I've got an always on cable connection (thru Blueyonder).
So, the game should know about the network...!
Maybe I'll try without the network connection ???
Thomas
Yur Vid card must support OpenGL
Does it?
And it ran the demo version of Quake 3 for a while until I could get a full
version....! (Which I've only just tried to install, due to having too many
other things I needed to do...!)
Thomas
IC.. well I think it support's OpenGL just fine... not the latest card... but at lest you should be able to see the menu..
Well, for a start:
Check these settings in you 'quake3folder'/Baseq3/q3config.cfg file:
seta r_allowExtensions "1"
seta r_glDriver "opengl32"
Are they set like this?

Not there? That's really weird!?! Did you try adding them?
Did this change anything?
Apart from this.. well, can't find anything unusual in there...
And otherwise, well maybe you could try to re-install the latest point-release.

Thomas, as i just recall:
- On my previous vid-card i had to install OpenGL apart from my video-driver to run Q3..
If you insert your Q3 cd... on the first menu (where you can select 'Install').. on the left bottom there is a tiny link that say's
GLSetup..
If nothing works... give it a try...
Tried adding them as well as doing another full install, followed by the
point release.
I now get a brown-ie coloured brick-wall type picture, but with no
text/menu/anything. And the PC is still locked up.
Seems, I'm getting there, (somewhere?) but why should this be happening..!!
Thomas
I did that. It didn't seem to work any better...!
As well as trying the drivers from the www.glsetup.com website.
All this did was to re-install an older set of Windows Matrox drivers...!!
Thomas
Ah yes..
What you're describing is the demo, when you start the original game for the first time.
Now it freezes at this point?
Another wild guess:
- Are you running a version of Zonalarm? [or similar Firewall]
If so, this program could halt Quake from further execution while it's immediately asking for internet access / server rights.
When it does, a popup box should come up asking for your confirmation. But I heard several cases that the popup actually appears
'behind' the game... i.e. on your desktop.
In this case, your system looks frozen. Quake won't run any further, looks like it hangs.
Did you add Quake3.exe to your firewall? Try to give it those rights and check again...
Maybe we could play a game when it's fixed! ;-)
Hi again, from the one with the Quake 3 "trouble"
Had already thought of that, so before I did anything (when trying your
suggestions), I moved anything in the StartUp folder to somewhere else, then
re-booted, then did the three finger salute and stopped anything
un-necessary running as well.
So, I was left with only Windows running and trying to get Quake going.
Which still didn't/doesn't run...!
I think I'll:
a) de-install all Quake bits
b) re-install the demo Quake 3, and see if I can get that going.
c) de-install Quake 3 demo
d) then do a full Q3A installation again (in a different directory of
course.)
Who knows.... if the obvious doesn't work, try the "whole nine yards"
approach.
Thks for your help.

Just for info - tried all the above and still nothing - Q3A now gets to the
"brick wall" screen (before it was just a white screen + mouse pointer) and
nothing happens the PC is locked up.
Have tried other DirectX games and these work fine (Crimson Skies/European
Air War etc). So, think the problem might be in the Q3A software rather than
my hardware. Last ditch attempt is to try it on a friends PC and see if it
installs on that. At elast I'll know the CDROM is OK.

- Might be a long shot, but remove all other CDs from your CD drives.
- Delete the q3config.cfg file (and temporarily rename your
autoexec.cfg, if you have one). Let the game generate a new q3config.
- Get the latest version of punkbuster. If that doesn't help,
temporarily set both sv_punkbuster and cl_punkbuster to 0 in your
config, and try again.
