What happened to Bitterman?

I found this in the Quake III manual:

Bitterman (Human): This hero of the Strogg War may also be its most tragic
victim. While a captive on Stroggos, vile experiments transformed his flesh
into something both far more and far less than human.

So does that mean he crashed on Stroggos again (at the end of Quake II)? I
hope he comes back in Quake IV.

Presumably it's a joke. Bitterman sure looks like a well known actor.

If you watch the ending cinematic to Quake 2, this is exactly what happens.
Of course we don't see him get captured...

He did, yep. Watch the end cinematic, after he killed the Makron and
blew up his space station he escaped in a pod which splashed down on
Stroggos.

Yeah, that might be where Q4 picks up.
