I've just moved my online gameplay onto a new PC. Specs are:

XP1800 @ 10 x 200
ATI 9000

With all the eye candy on and running at 1024 x 768, I get about 90fps.
Single player is fine but when I play online, it is very choppy and I
constantly get 'Connection Interrupted' messages. I've also tried turning
everything off and running at 640 x 480 but it still doesn't make a
difference.

I've tried the settings from
http://ucguides.savagehelp.com/ConnectionFAQ/Quake3.htm and am using:

56K Modem seta cl_maxpackets "30"
seta cl_packetdup "1"
* seta snaps "20"

42000 BPS: seta rate "4500"

My modem connects a 42667.

If I go back to my old PC with K6-2 450 and Voodoo 3, I get about 42fps but
at least connection is stable.

If it makes any difference, I'm running Win98SE on K6 PC and WinXP SP1 on
the XP1800. (Nothing running in background when I play)

I'd really like to get playing on my new machine and would appreciate any
help offered.

Thanks

Try moving modem to new PCI slot. Keep it away from video card to avoid RFI.

Are you useing the same modem in both PCs? If not, could try swapping these.

If the modem is an AMR slot modem, it will connect at a good speed, but
will ping like shit. I used to use 2 modems, a pci modem at 31kbs that
pinged under 200, for games online, and for downloads and web stuff the AMR
modem, which pinged at 350, but connected at 43kbs (had them on a splitter)

It's an external USR V92 modem. I've tried connecting it to both Com 1 and
Com2.

Thanks

Look at the RS-232 port settings data rates. Should be 115,200 BPS setting.
Could be spyware programs phoning home, install Ad-Aware from
http://lavasoftusa.com to clean system. I wonder if any IRQ issues are
involved. If you have any PCI cards, try moving them. Backround programs can
sometimes cause trouble, Run>msconfig and disable unneeded Startup items.

You might connect at 42667 but drop down to a lower speed. Try lowering the
rate and adjusting upstream, then do a net_restart:

seta cl_maxpackets "25"
seta rate "4000"

You m ight want to disable QoS as well:

Com port set at 115,200. There are no PCI cards in the machine. Device
manager shows no conflicts. The machine is a new XP build with Office and a
few games.

Thanks

Lowered maxpackets and rate as you suggested. Though connection was not lost
as frequent, the game was stuttering throughout.

I saw the setting to disable QoS but wasn't sure what it was or whether I
needed it or not. Can it just be uninstalled without any side effects ?

Thanks

Interesting development...

I copied the entire Q3 directory from the old PC and ran it on the new
machine and it was running (connection wise) was a lot better*. I was able
to play like I did before but with higher frame rates. Is there anyway of
comparing the config of the 'copied over folder' to the version on my new
PC. Want to turn the eye candy up on the version I just copied over but
don't want to mess anything up.

* I say better as it is still not perfect. Every now and again I get the
stuttering like before (high ping, connection interrupted, etc). If I bring
down the console when this happens, I get the messages:

NET_SendPacket: WASEINTR
NET_SendPacket: WASEINTR
NET_SendPacket: WASEINTR
NET_SendPacket: WASEINTR

Continuously scrolling down the screen. After a minute or two it goes back
to normal and I can play again. Any ideas what this means ?

Thanks

Reduce your cl_maxpackets OR com_maxfps. See com_maxfps and cl_maxpackets <

OK, I've set my maxpackets to 20 and rate to 4000. I've also downloaded all
the security updates on top of XP SP1 and it appears to be playable now
(well as can be expected for dial up :-) )

Glad to see such a helpful community. Thanks all.
