I know this is off topic somewhat but I cant get any answers over in the
Half Life group so I thought I would try here.

Lately I have been giving Action Half Life a try and so far, I really like
it. However, I have a few questions concerning Half Life net play in
general.

First of all, I have noticed that Half Life net play seems to be quite a bit
laggier than Quake2. I have visited a few sites and done some tweaking on my
config files but it still seems laggy to me. Is this normal? Also, the
controls seem a bit sluggish to me. Its not too bad but its definatly not as
responsive as Quake2. Anyone else notice this too?

I am also curious as to what exactly is downloaded onto my machine when I
log onto a server.

I appreciate any answers.

The HL net-code is definitely not quite as good as Quake2's. I can't really
help you much with tweaking it though, because I'm using my cable-modem to
get good performance by brute force rather than finesse. :) You might try
http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/hl/, though.

Also, take a look at HL CounterStrike:

make sure you have the latest patch, it improves the net play (a little).
Like Ray said, I have cable so I ping around 100 to lots of servers so the
bigger load isn't as noticeable.

One thing I definitely have noticed that some of the others here (like Ray)
will NOT notice - if you have a 2-3 year old puter (I have 200 MMX), the
extra load that HL puts on your system will add a "CPU/system lag". It gets
worse as more ppl join. Now, I ONLY will join servers that have a cap of 12
players. Before that, I was always finding myself getting on a server with
8 players, more ppl join and then I had to log off due to lag. I didn't
have the problem on the servers with less ppl. I know, I know, could be the
server itself, but many times I would aks, "is everyone lagging" and many
weren't. It was my lousy (but lovable) puter.

Try visiting servers with a lower max client cap (8-12 players max). Maybe
it will help. HL/TFC rocks, just like Q2. I love it!

the stuff that you are downloading when you join a game are the decals that
people spray on the walls. They are customizable, and you can change yours
to add your pic or your name.

yeah. I have had the same problem. there seems to be lots of "extras" in
AQHL that slows down everything. maybe I just need to get used to the
half-life "feel"

does anyone think that the bullet shells that come out of the mp5 is a bit
excessive?
is that the cause of some lag?

and the snipergun is really toned down. :(

My mates and I have all found AHL to be a bit chunky, even over LAN with
good computers and only 4-6 players. Try Counterstrike. Its kinda similar in
style to AHL, but seems to run heaps better. I actually think it kicks arse.

OBTW, Flycutter and I have played it using RogerWilco for voice comms.
You've GOT to try that out. If you see me playing, check ICQ for my IP.
I've probably got an RW server running. If I don't, I'm most likely in a
game with Fly where HE'S got RW going. :)

CS is great fun by the way!

I've only been playing it for a few days, but it really feels fun and
very much like Action Quake.

Action Halflife for me is actually too laggy to be very playable, HalfLife
on my system doesn't deal to well with the huge maps in Action Halflife,
it lags all to hell.

Counter Strike on the other hand runs very well and I like the idea of having
to earn some of the better weapons.

I was just playing on a server with Flycutter earlier today VGG's !

Seeyas in my crosshairs.
