Does anyone know where I can find an easy way to set up a 4-8player lan?
I read some of the articles and I get it abit, and when u do get the
computers hooked up, how do u open quake2 so everyone is in the server? Do u
connect by IP or something?
Thanks In Advance!

Well the way i do it (as i have 4 puters on my lan) is by using Network
Cards..
You will need 4 Network cards (compatable with each other, Avoids conflicts)
And 4 Crossover Cables
And Most Importantly , a Hub To accomadate the network .. ( i have a 12 port
hub,
in case of extra computers used one day) ...
If by chance anyone is using win95 .. its going to be a pain setting up..
Ive found that win98 , win98 SE (havent used win2000 but i dont see how it
cant) will setup almost
Automatically .. if you have cable and want the 4 puters to be able to
access the internet
at the same time and logging onto a server on the net .. The computer that
has the
Internet "Cable" setup on it must be the server .. use win98 SE or win2000
as they support
Internet sharing ..
If any hassle .. email me

Oh gosh... Yes, you'll need to get your network up and running and the
machines talking to each other which will probably take a while if you're
new to it.

* Please, anyone correct what is wrong from here :)

I've not set up networks from scratch; only dealt with them at work but I
think you will need a TCP/IP protocol set up for Q2 and I believe that you
will need a hub for 3+ players (unless you use many network cards and set
the computers to act as routers but just forget I mentioned this :)...)
You will need to allocate IP addresses on each of the machines and make sure
you can 'see' them all from each other.
It will involve messing about with the network properties (I am assuming
this is some sort of Windows setup BTW) in your control panel which is
rather a quirky beast but with some perseverance you should get there.

After all that I believe you can set a machine running a Q2 dedicated server
(set dedicated "1" in the autoexec.cfg)
and at the client ends use the 'connect' command to connect to the server
IP.

If you don't use the dedicated server you have a 'listen' server; ie you can
actually play on that machine but it saps more resources and I think you
will have an advantage on that machine (maybe not on LAN though)

sorry for no 'genuine' help but I honestly think you will need to get your
network up and running before you can address the problem of how to run Q2
over it.
I expect that if you do have problems it will be with the general network
setup rather than the Q2 setup.

NO NO NO - you need a standard UTP cable for each PC if you use a hub. Do
NOT get crossover cables, unless you only have 2 machines and don't want to
shell out on a hub.

Networking in Win95 is the same as 98.

2000 is an absoloute pig to get drivers for, especially for older cards. 95
and 98 are pigs for setting up old ISA cards, avoid them. I speak from
experience.

If your using some other OS, check the drivers before you buy!

No, any machine can be the server, not the machine with the internet
connection. Bear in mind, if your on a modem, only one person can play Quake
at a time, and people surfing on other machines will give you L-A-G. Again,
I speak from experience :(

If your on cable, the more people using the connection, the laggier it gets.
Also, you will need to configure TCP/IP on each PC to use internet sharing.

You can also buy starter kits, which include 2 network cards and a hub ,and
cabling.

As for Quake2, it can support TCP/IP and IPX. Windows filesharing seems to
NetBEUI installed, too. To actually play, use the multiplayer menu in Q2,
one machine starts a server, the rest use the join network server option to
connect to it. I do lots of LAN type stuff, so if this wasn't clear, mail
me.

And then when you want 5 computers? or 6 etc etc........

Hubs are cheap, (40-50) and easy, no terminators needed. Just a bunch of
cables.

Go to 'network neighbourhood' install a LAN card (PnP PCI is easiest),
install TCP/IP protocol. Set your IP address to 192.168.0.1 for your PC and
just increase the last number by 1 for each extra PC on the network. On
each PC set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 (i.e identical, don't
increment). Don't touch any other settings.

Plug each PC into a hub using a patch cable (cheap - RJ45). Once all
network cards are installed and running, you will have lights on the back
of the cards, and on the hub.

From your machine type 'Ping 192.168.0.2' and you should get a response
telling you the speed of the connection. If that doesn't work, check all
your settings to make sure they are working fine, check your cables and
make sure the hub is powered.

Get one of your mates to set up a Quake network game, then the rest of you
just connect to it.

I have read all the advice on setting up the LAN.
My 2 PC LAN is working, now I have to give each PC a unique IP address so
they can address each other when running multiplayer. What adresses do I
use?

Will they affect my Dial up connection?

Any addresses in the
10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255
ranges is considered local network adresses
be sure to set your PC's to the same subnet

If you have any problems, give me a mail and I can send you a tutorial I'm
putting together to cover this very topic.
