Hi!

Using Windows XP and OpenGL (ATI Radeon 9700) Quake 2 (3.20 point
release) crashes as soon as I load a level. Any ideas how to get it
working 3d-accelerated with this configuration?

BTW: I'm using the Catalyst driver 6-13-10-6200 so far.

Thanks for hints in advance

Check and see if you have an opengl.dll or opengl32.dll file in your q2 or
q2/baseq2 folder. If there is one, delete it. If this is not the problem,
did you have another videocard installed before the 9700? or is this a clean
install of windows? I am using the 6166 drivers on my 9700 and q2 works
fine. Do you play any other opengl games? do they work fine?

It isn't. I'm going to reinstall it soon. There was a Voodoo5 5500 in
this system before and loads of different drivers that even sometimes
supported opengl. You think there is some relic left from that driver?

Well then I guess that reinstalling windows will help. I thought that it
might be some Carmack-Get-The-Last-Frame-Out-Of-It-Thing that might
crash Q2. However if it works on your computer I think I wil get it to
work on mine too.

They work with minor problems. At least they don't tend to crash.

It's a prob in those drivers, I have r9700pro + xp and q2 wont work with
those drivers, period.
Rollback to wxp-w2k-r9700-6-13-10-6193-efg drivers.
Thats the only solution so far :(

I would say it is probably some remnant driver left behind. there was a
3dfx minigl driver for q2 that was sometimes installed in the q2 folder
somewhere, and causes problems. But it could be another reference to the
3dfx drivers somewhere on your system.

I would be very upset if q2 didn't run. q2 ctf is still one of my all-time
favorite games ;o)

By the way, just for comparison:

abit kr7a
amd xp1800 @ 1.67ghz
512mb crucial pc2100 @ 145mhz cl2
wd 80gb 8mb cache hd
kenwood 72x truex cdrom
maddog 16x dvdrom
intel etherexpress pro100+
sblive xgamer
radeon 9700 pro
win98SE / 2k pro / xp pro

q2 works fine in all os's

Nice answer. You dont know anything about the prob and u tell the dude to
"reinstall directx"
He is running xp, doesnt that tell u anything?
You also might've said "Change your mobo, update via4in1 and reinstall xp"
to cause (possibly) much more work and a good chance to someone fuck up his
puter even more without even a slightest chance solving the problem.
If you'd read the answers in this thread you'd have seen that the correct
answer is already been told.

I also have this problem with these drivers and Radeon 7000.
I have made bugreport but ATI driver-engineers have not replied to it.
6166 drivers work fine but then NHL2003 crashes. So it will have to be
Quake2 that crashes now. Waiting for a fix...

Heh, how can he "upgrade" his drivers when he is TRYING to use the latest?
Du make whql-certified drivers at home for yourself? Please share them, I
can offer webspace.

I'm also curious to know what directx version did u install to winxp to
solve the prob?
Since xp comes with 8.1 and that's the latest full directx-api, (there is
8.2 which is practically 8.1 +ddplay update) so since u told us that
upgrading directx helped u I have to guess that u upgraded to DirectX 9 rc0.
Since that really wouldnt help u with any game compatibility whatsoever I
have to call u a liar.

I have an 8500LE/128 and I got the same shit when I upgraded the
drivers to v6200. I sent a message to ATI requesting help and they
sent me a fucking form letter telling me to check every fucking thing
on my computer, except their drivers. Took three hours!! still same
shit!! Reinstalled the previous drivers and Voli, it works fine
again. Nothing wrong with my systems (two of them) it's their damn
drivers and I can tell you you won't get any help from them (ATI).
Damn poor tech support if you ask me. I got better service from 3DFX
AFTER they had gone out of business!!!

BTW, Quake2 is going to be too dark to play in Opengl mode. I have
the configs to add to make it work, if you want them.
