There is a lot of talk about Quake being not very good to say there was
so much hype about it. Maybe it would have been a better sucess if
Duke Nukem hadn't come out. I dunno...please tell me what Quake is
like compared to Doom.
Given a choice of the 2 I'd play DOOM over quake in a second - modem play worked
- it had intellegent menus (not some stupid programming console with a whole new
language you have to learn) - a fun plot and cool monsters and levels.
QUAKE is just plain boring...sure its targeted for multiplayers but unless you
are an ID programmer good luck connecting with a modem...
Of course if you have a IPX network in your home (and don't we all) you might
enjoy Quake.
one thing i have noticed just plaing shareware Quake, the engine is MUCH better.
When you kill something, it falls to the ground, in doom, no matter where you were
around the dead body, you were always looking at the bodys feet. I Quake, when you shott
somthing, you can look at it from all angles. I also like the support for VESA modes.
In case you did not know how to change the mode, type in VID_MODE 0-9, 0-9 being the
mode. 0,1 are bout the same, 2-9 have much more detail. I also found in Quake SH, you
cant put in a music cd and listen to the music on it for each of the level. That is
cool.

In your left hand you hold a picture of an apple. In your right hand you hold an
apple. Which would you rather bite into?
Doom...good.
Quake...god like.
That is a good analogy.
Also, from a players aspect the differences aren't as obvious, but
somewhat intracate. They are progressions of gameplay, look, and
veratility, as well as, many others. Alot of the improvements become
appearant through playing.
From a level designer's veiwpoint. The improvements are quite obvious.
Many limits have been lifted and allow much freedom for creativity and
design.
I've noticed that a big thread of debate has gone on about duke3d vs.
Quake. I believe they are both good games in there right. Duke pretty
much stretched an engine simular to the one in doom to it's limits.
Quake on the other hand does not have those limits imposed on it.
I see it this way: Duke had alot of dressing but not alot of
sustanence. Quake has alot of sustanence, but very little sugar
coating.
Comparing Duke to Quake is like comparing a suped up volkswagon to a
Cadillac. On the volkswagon: you can bore out the heads, add a better
carburator, change the gear ratios etc. But it's still a volkswagon. A
Cadillac has better and more powerfull engine, better top speed etc.
But no matter how you supe up that volkwagon the Cadillac will always be
a better ride.
Also I think one thing that the Anti-Quakers need to be aware of is that
Quake has to ability to tailored to practically any design. That means
if you want you character to do all the things like in duke it's totally
possible. But it's leaves you with even more flexibility to do alot
more. The Dukers would probably say, "but you can customize the *.con
files"
Yes you can, but you can't radically change them. With Quake though,
you can practically turn it into a completely different game if you
wanted. Then you can add whatever glitz to it you want.
I think alot of people don't realize the potential to that quake is
providing for gamers. It will allow us to tailor worlds to practically
however we want.
Comparing Duke to Quake is like comparing AD&D to GURPS. in AD&D you
can alter it's parameters a little to make different. But you are still
limited: like try adding a tank to it. or even adding a shotgun. You'd
find out that it wouldn't work very well within it. Now gurps on the
other hand you can add anything to it. That means if you started with a
fantasy campaign and you wanted to have your character be transported to
a Futuristic type world, you could do it very easily.
I guess if you don't like the idea of flexablity and having options to
put your own expression into a game, then Quake isn't for you.
I think maybe some people just aren't ready for Quake. That'll be their
loss.
